Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMT) are rare and poorly understood inflammatory neoplasms. Most commonly occurring in the liver and gastrointestinal tract, cases of bladder involvement have been rarely reported. Bladder IMT generally presents with gross hematuria and can be differentiated from other bladder tumors by expression of anaplastic lymphoma kinase. We report the occurrence of an Bladder IMT detected following lower urinary tract reconstruction with bladder augmentation.

BACKGROUND: Heterotaxy syndrome is associated with a plethora of cardiovascular and other multi-system anomalies with a high childhood mortality. A dilated azygos vein as part of the polysplenia variant of heterotaxy syndrome may cause oesophageal stenosis owing to a prolonged compression. We describe our technique of extramediastinal oesophago-oesophagostomy in the prone position for this rare congenital syndromic malformation with an excellent outcome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 17-year-old boy with heterotaxy syndrome presented with intermittent dysphagia and postprandial emesis with failure

Tracheoesophageal fistulas (TEF) are an anomalous communication between airway and esophagus. There are several types of TEF. Congenital are mainly associated to an esophageal atresia. The type III or C, in which the upper segment of the esophagus ends in a blind pouch and there is distal tracheoesophageal fistula above the carina, accounts for 85% of esophageal atresias. The other are extremely infrequent. H-type or N-type TEF, classified as type 5 or E, is an uncommon variant and accounts for less than 4%. Recurrent TEF is a serious complication after first surgery of esophageal atresia and

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the aortic arch are important as they may be associated with vascular ring anomalies. The most common vascular ring anomaly in dogs is a persistent right aortic arch. However, published data of the distribution of the different types of vascular ring anomalies and other aortic arch anomalies are lacking. The objective of this retrospective descriptive study was to evaluate both the prevalence and the different types of aortic arch anomalies that can be detected using thoracic computed tomography (CT) examination. Archived thoracic CT examinations acquired be

Pulmonary artery sling (PAS) is a rare congenital cardiovascular abnormality. In typical PAS patients, the left pulmonary artery (LPA) arises from the right pulmonary artery and passes between the trachea and esophagus, which possibly causes tracheal stenosis and some respiratory symptoms. PAS typically associates with other cardiovascular anomalies, which may cause difficulties to the treatment of patients. This report described a rare case of a two-month-old boy with PAS, VSD, and tracheal stenosis simultaneously and underwent procedures without tracheoplasty.

Double aortic arch represents a congenital vascular malformation that is characterized by the development of a complete vascular ring around the esophagus and trachea due to an anomaly in the development of branchial arteries. We present the case of a 31-year-old gravida that was referred for fetal ultrasound anomalies screening at 22 weeks and six days of gestation. Routine ultrasound scanning of the fetus revealed a structural aortic arch anomaly consistent with a double aortic arch, with no other cardiac and diextracardiac congenital structural malformations. Knowledge of embryology and ima

BACKGROUND: Timely identification of esophageal atresia is challenging. Diagnosis may be suspected antenatally with a combination of polyhydramnios, associated with a small or absent stomach bubble or other anomalies. Esophageal atresia can be suspected postnatally in the presence of tachypnea, increased oral secretions, and an inability to advance an orogastric tube. Failure to recognize an esophageal atresia can have life-threatening implications.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 5-day-old infant with a history of failure to thrive and respiratory distress presented in a community emergency department

Communicating bronchopulmonary foregut malformations (CBPFMs) are complex and rare anomalies. Their characteristic feature is an anomalous communication between the respiratory system (trachea, lung or bronchus) on one side and the gastrointestinal tract (oesophagus or stomach) on the other. Though acquired CBPFMs are known, the large majority of them are congenital and single. CBPFMs often go undetected even at surgery and require more than one operation before they are successfully addressed. This is because the symptomatology of CBPFM resembles the more common oesophageal atresia (OA) with

Decades of clinical, pathological, and epidemiological study and the recent application of advanced microarray and gene sequencing technologies have led to an understanding of the causes and pathogenesis of most recognized patterns of malformation. Still, there remain a number of patterns of malformation whose pathogenesis has not been established. Six such patterns of malformation are sirenomelia, VACTERL association, OEIS complex, limb-body wall defect (LBWD), urorectal septum malformation (URSM) sequence, and MURCS association, all of which predominantly affect caudal structures. On the bas

INTRODUCTION: Congenital single lung (CSL) is a rare condition, and symptomatic patients often present with respiratory distress or recurrent respiratory infection due to mediastinal shift causing vascular or airway compression. Aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) is another rare congenital anomality that can lead to tracheal or esophageal compressions. There is only one other case of concurrent presentation of CSL and ARSA reported, which presented unique challenge in surgical management of our patient. Here we present a step-wise, multidisciplinary approach to manage symptomatic CSL and

RATIONALE: Escobar syndrome (ES) is an autosomal recessive disorder. It is highly characterized by facial abnormalities, congenital diaphragmatic muscle weakness, myasthenic-like features, and skin pterygiums on multiple body legions. ES is a rare condition associated with many external and internal abnormalities. The internal malformations described in ES affect many organs including the heart, lungs, esophagus, liver, spleen, and intestine. The purpose of this paper is to explore the cardiac manifestations associated with ES.

INTRODUCTION: Several surgical techniques are available for pediatric esophageal reconstruction. We started to use pedicled jejunum interposition graft (PJIG) because other techniques had significant long-term complications. In this retrospective study, the indications, surgical complications, and long-term outcomes were assessed in patients with PJIG.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: With ethical consent, we reviewed the hospital records of 14 patients (7 females) who from 2005 to 2019 underwent a total of 16 esophageal reconstructions with PJIG.
RESULTS: Median age at PJIG was 1.6 (range: 0.2-15) ye

Although eating problems have been described as long-term morbidities of esophageal atresia (EA), there have been few studies exploring eating outcomes in children born with EA as primary aim. Parents of children operated on for EA in our Institution from January 2012 to January 2016, answered a telephone structured interview developed specifically to conduct the present study, assessing eating skills at 3 years of age. Clinical data were collected from children's medical records. Parents (45 mothers and 6 fathers) of 51 children (male = 34; female = 17) with a median age of 3.5 years form the

Only eleven SPECC1L mutations have been reported worldwide which were associated with autosomal dominant oblique facial clefts, Opitz G/BBB Syndrome and Teebi hypertelorism syndrome. In this study, we reported the first Chinese patient with Teebi hypertelorism syndrome. Utilizing whole exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing, we identified a de novo missense mutation NM_015330.3: c.1249A > C, p.(Thr417Pro) in SPECC1L gene. With common manifestations in Teebi hypertelorism syndrome such as special facial appearance, umbilical malformations and congenital heart defects, the patient also had unusu

Esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF) is one of the most common gastrointestinal birth defects. It can occur in isolation or in association with other birth defects or genetic syndromes. We retrospectively reviewed the EA/TEF cases evaluated at Rady Children's Hospital San Diego (San Diego, CA) between 2007 and 2016. Data were collected for 157 patients. The majority of patients (105, 66.8%) had an associated major malformation present, and 52 patients (33.1%) had isolated EA/TEF. The patients with associated malformations were distributed as follows: 16 patients (10.2%) had a

Anastomotic stricture is a common complication of esophageal atresia (EA) repair. Such strictures are managed with dilation or other therapeutic endoscopic techniques such as steroid injections, stenting, or endoscopic incisional therapy (EIT). In situations where endoscopic therapy is unsuccessful, patients with refractory strictures may require surgical stricture resection; however, the point at which endoscopic therapy should be abandoned in favor of repeat thoracotomy is unclear. We hypothesized that increasing numbers of therapeutic endoscopies are associated with increased likelihood of

Aortic abnormalities are a rare cause of dysphagia in children, adolescents, young adults and in the elderly. In these cases, vascular abnormalities commonly include aberrant right subclavian artery, left subclavian artery originating from the right aortic arch and, more rarely, from the right aortic arch with thoracic aorta on the left. Dysphagia, also known as "dysphagia lusoria", is due to the compression of the esophagus caused by one or several congenital vascular abnormalities and can occur in childhood or later in adulthood. Upper gastrointestinal series show extrinsic compression of th

Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has become an essential tool in interventional cardiologist's daily toolbox which allows a continuous visualization of the movement of the visceral organ without trauma and the observation of the heartbeat in real time, due to the sensor's location at the esophagus directly behind the heart and it becomes useful for navigation during the surgery. However, TEE images provide very limited data on clear anatomically cardiac structures. Instead, computed tomography (CT) images can provide anatomical information of cardiac structures, which can be used as guid

Double aortic arch (DAA) is an extremely rare congenital anomaly that can be divided into right dominant, left dominant, and balanced DAA according to the relative size of the two arches. The incidence of balanced DAA is only 5% among double arch anomalies. DAA is symptomatic only when it produces symptoms secondary to compression of the trachea or esophagus. DAA is rarely associated with other congenital heart diseases. In this report, we present a rare case of asymptomatic DAA combined with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) in an 8-month-old girl.
