Altitudinal cross-sectional study of the sand fly fauna of the highlands of Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), caused by Leishmania aethiopica and transmitted by Phlebotomus longipes, is endemic in northern Ethiopia. However, sand fly fauna is poorly documented in the northern Tigray region. High-altitude CL cases have also been observed, but their local acquisition is uncertain. To identify the faunal composition, their geographical and altitudinal distribution, cross-sectional surveys were conducted in ten villages (average altitude range: 2411 - 3186 meters) with confirmed CL cases across four endemic districts of the region. A total of 170 light trap-nights

Macroecological synchronization of vector-borne diseases under climate variability in Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Climate variability may synchronize vector-borne diseases across distinct transmission systems. This study evaluates climatic coherence among malaria, cutaneous leishmaniasis, and Chagas disease in Colombia and projects changes in environmental suitability under future climate scenarios. METHODS: National surveillance, climatic, environmental, and socioeconomic data from 1980 to 2025 were analyzed using generalized additive models, distributed lag nonlinear models, and wavelet coherence. Annual series were used for interannual analyses, whereas monthly epidemiological and climatic

Antileishmanial potential of polar fractions from Amaranthus blitoides S. Watson, Caucalis platycarpos L., and Cistanche flava (C.A.Mey.) Korsh.: evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a research priority, yet its treatment remains challenging. CL lesions arise from complex interactions between the parasite and host immunity, where excessive inflammation can delay healing. Given the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties of medicinal plants, this study evaluated the effects of polar fractions from methanolic extracts of Amaranthus blitoides S. Watson, Caucalis platycarpos L., Cistanche flava (C.A.Mey.) Korsh., and their mixtures on CL caused by Leishmania major. METHO

Skin Disease After Refugee Resettlement: A Practical 90-Day Approach for Dermatologists and Primary Care Physicians.

The first months after refugee resettlement create an opportunity to identify transmissible, disabling, and undertreated skin disease. In the United States, the domestic medical examination generally occurs 30-90 days after arrival, but the clinical principles are relevant across resettlement systems. We conducted a structured narrative review of peer-reviewed publications and organizational or public-health sources. Evidence varied by migration stage, region, age, and referral pathway; camp and specialty-clinic data should not be treated as post-resettlement prevalence estimates. Physicians s

First record of Phlebotomus sergenti (Diptera: Psychodidae) in China and its potential epidemiological implications.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a severe parasitic disease transmitted by sand fly bites. Phlebotomus sergenti is a principal vector of Leishmania tropica, causing anthroponotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) across the Mediterranean, North Africa, South Asia, and West Asia. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, located in northwestern China, is a well-recognized endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), with sporadic cutaneous leishmaniasis cases also documented in the region. Nevertheless, Ph. sergenti has never been reported in China prior to this study. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Fie

The utility of point-of-care haemoglobin A1c tests in a very remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community: an agreement analysis with routine laboratory testing.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis is a prevalent tropical disease caused by more than 20 Leishmania species (Protozoa, Kinetoplastida and Trypanosomatidae). Among different clinical forms of the disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis is the most common form, with an annual 0.6-1 million new cases reported worldwide. This disease's standard treatment is pentavalent antimonial (SbV) that have been used successfully since the first half of the 20th century as a first-line drug. However, treatment failure is an increasing problem that is persistently reported from endemic areas. It is important to define and st

Assessing Designed Model Membrane-Targeting Peptides Found as Potential Molecular Scaffolds against Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Recent research has demonstrated therapeutic potential against visceral leishmaniasis, a neglected disease with high prevalence and severity in very populated low- and middle-income regions; however, effective treatments for the cutaneous or mucocutaneous forms remain limited, despite their higher incidence. The negatively charged composition of Leishmania membranes differentiates it from the zwitterionic nature of mammalian cells, providing a basis for selective targeting by cationic peptides. Here, designed peptides (DecP-9, DecP-17, and DecP-18), spanning a broad range of charge and hydroph

Sulforaphane targets Leishmania promastigotes to inhibit parasite motility and alters host autophagy to suppress parasite replication in macrophages.

UNLABELLED: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a neglected tropical disease caused by the protozoan parasites Leishmania infantum (LI) and Leishmania donovani (LD). VL disproportionately affects populations that live in extreme poverty and those affected by climate change. Treatment options are limited, fiscally prohibitive, and toxic to some that receive treatment. In cases where VL remains untreated, death is inevitable. Although disease prevalence is increasing in affluent countries with robust research capabilities, there remains little economic incentive to search for new, more accessible non

An Amharic Version of the Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI): Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Skin diseases are associated with reduced health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of children and their families. The Children's Dermatology Life Quality Index (CDLQI) questionnaire is a skin disease-specific measure of HRQoL in children. Our study aimed to translate the CDLQI into Amharic, culturally adapt, and evaluate the validity and reliability of the translation. METHODS: This study was embedded within a larger hospital-based cohort study of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Forward-backward translation procedures were conducted, followed by assessment of content and face validit

First documented cases of equine leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (Mundinia) martiniquensis in France.

In this study, we describe the first documented cases of equine cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania (Mundinia) martiniquensis in France and provide clinical and parasitological data relevant for the recognition of this emerging infection in horses. Three horses presenting localized cutaneous lesions were diagnosed with L. martiniquensis infection in different regions of France without spatial or temporal clustering. Lesions were clinically nonspecific and initially compatible with common equine dermatological conditions, including sarcoid-like tumors. Histopathological examination rev

Localised cutaneous leishmaniasis in an immunosuppressed host: the role for adjuvant photodynamic therapy after incomplete amphotericin B response.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by the Leishmania donovani complex is uncommon in Europe and can masquerade as malignancy. We describe an immunocompromised man in his 70s with a 15-year verrucous plaque on the right hallux initially suspected as squamous cell carcinoma. Histology revealed macrophages packed with amastigotes; PCR confirmed L. donovani complex infection and serology was strongly positive. Staging excluded mucosal and visceral disease. Systemic liposomal amphotericin B achieved partial regression. Because of persistent hyperkeratosis and the acral site, adjuvant methyl-aminol

Development of Imiqualine compounds with enhanced activity against cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical disease still inflicting a high number of individuals worldwide with a rising prevalence in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Current treatment options remain hindered by substantial toxicity, high relapse rates, and emergence of drug resistance. Imiqualines, a family of heterocyclic aromatic compounds, garnered increasing interest for their broad antiparasitic activity, particularly against CL. The parent immunomodulatory compound Imiquimod has been used in clinical trials for the treatment of relapsed cases of CL, yet its clinical use was

Comparative anatomy of the thoracic muscles of bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea).

Bees exhibit a remarkable anatomical diversity, with phenotypic traits that reflect broad evolutionary patterns and specific adaptations. Understanding these patterns requires examining key anatomical features, such as thoracic musculature, which drives morpho-functional variation and underscores their extensive phenotypic diversity. The thorax (or 'mesosoma,' as it can be referred to in the context of bees and other apocritan Hymenoptera) serves as a power core, housing muscles responsible for leg, wing, and also head and metasomal articulation movements. Despite the role of the thoracic musc

Variable and fixed rate debt: Gambling on the future state of the economy after Covid-19.

Melatonin is a product of the amino acid tryptophan in the pineal gland. Once synthesized, the specific mechanisms governing the release of melatonin from the pineal gland and its functions are largely unknown. Besides its regulatory role in circadian rhythms in mammals, because of its widespread subcellular distribution, melatonin contributes to the reduction of oxidative damage in both the lipid and the aqueous environments of the cell. This postulate is widely supported by the experimental observations showing that melatonin protects lipids in membranes, proteins in the cytosol, and DNA in

The Ratio of Silicon to Chitin in Diatom Cell Walls Influences Their Resilience to Environmental Stress.

Polymer based nanoparticles for drug delivery is an alternative approach to overcome drug resistance and drug toxicity especially for cutaneous leishmaniasis treatment. The present study shows synthesis and characterization of Miltefosine loaded chitosan nanoparticles (MFS-CNPs). The synthesized MFS-CNPs were experimented to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxicity and efficacy of the synthesized drug loaded nanoparticles by hemolysis assay and 3-(4, 5- dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyletetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. MFS-CNPs were synthesized by ionic gelation method with sodium tripolyphosphate.

Beyond the parasite: skin-intrinsic cytolytic circuits drive disease in cutaneous leishmaniasis and reveal targets for host-directed therapy.

SUMMARYCutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a globally prevalent parasitic disease in which tissue pathology often arises primarily from immune-mediated damage rather than uncontrolled parasite replication. Despite effective Th1 responses and the production of IFN-γ, lesions often fail to resolve, highlighting an uncoupling of protective immunity from disease pathogenesis. This review synthesizes evidence from experimental models and human studies demonstrating that skin-intrinsic cytolytic inflammatory circuits-rather than parasite burden-are dominant drivers of lesion persistence and treatment fa

OBJECTIVES: Both liver fibrosis and osteoporosis share inflammatory pathways, with liver fibrosis potentially contributing to decreased bone mineral density (BMD). The rising prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and associated liver fibrosis, especially in older populations, may increase the risk of osteoporosis, but evidence remains inconclusive. This study aims to investigate the relationship between liver fibrosis and osteoporosis in individuals over 50 years old. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Bushehr Elderly Health Program (BEHP), a cohort of 2,
