Histopathological findings and staining performance in cutaneous nodules from a cat with Leishmania amazonensis infection.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a zoonotic disease with wide geographic distribution and significant public health impact. In Brazil, the main etiological agents are Leishmania braziliensis and Leishmania amazonensis. In animals, the disease usually presents as a chronic condition characterized by poorly healing skin lesions, oral and ocular involvement, and cutaneous nodules, most commonly affecting the head and neck regions. Diagnosis may be achieved using molecular techniques, immunohistochemistry, cytology, histopathology, and culture. Despite the endemic nature of CL in several regions, h

Spatiotemporal dynamics and ecological determinants of cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Errachidia Province, southeastern Morocco: A 16-year municipality-level analysis with SARIMA forecasting.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne parasitic disease transmitted by female sandflies of the genus Phlebotomus and affects approximately 1.2 million people annually in more than 90 countries worldwide. Morocco remains one of the most affected countries in North Africa, where the disease continues to represent a major public health concern. This study aimed to analyze the spatial and temporal trends of leishmaniasis incidence across all municipalities of Errachidia Province between 2010 and 2025 and to assess the influence of ecological, demographic, and socio-economic factors on its distribution.

Lack of leishmania spp. detection in a molecular survey of high-risk domestic cats from the southcentral USA.

Endemic transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis, primarily caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana complex, has become increasingly recognized in the southcentral USA. Veterinary species could play a role in the epidemiology of L. (L.) mexicana in the USA, and feline cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. (L.) mexicana has been reported in Texas, overlapping in distribution with human incidence. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate high-risk cats from shelters in Texas and Oklahoma for infection with Leishmania spp. by qPCR. Tissue samples were opportunistically collected post-mortem

Topical Allium sativum extract reduces parasite burden and promotes tissue repair in Leishmania mexicana-infected BALB/c mice.

Localized cutaneous leishmaniasis (LCL) caused by Leishmania mexicana is a neglected tropical disease with limited therapeutic options due to the toxicity, high cost, and prolonged administration associated with meglumine antimoniate (Glucantime®), highlighting the need for safer and more accessible treatments. In the present study, topical cream formulations containing aqueous extracts of Allium sativum (1%, 5%, and 10%) were evaluated in an experimental BALB/c mouse model of LCL. The 1% formulation showed the highest efficacy, significantly reducing lesion size and parasite burden compared t

Cluster of imported cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania major among travellers returning from central Tunisia, France, October 2025 to May 2026.

Between October 2025 and May 2026, 28 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major were identified at Toulouse University Hospital, France, contrasting with fewer than three cases diagnosed annually in 2019-2024. Epidemiological investigations linked 24 cases to recent travel to Tunisia, with 19 reporting exposure in the governorate of Sidi Bouzid, endemic for zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis. These findings suggest increased transmission in central Tunisia and reinforce the need for surveillance of imported leishmaniasis in Europe.

Spatiotemporal patterns of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis in the high-burden provinces of Morocco, 1995-2022: an exploratory analysis of environmental and socio-demographic correlates.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) caused by Leishmania major remains a major public health concern in Morocco, especially in certain semi-arid and pre-Saharan regions where ecological conditions favor transmission. In recent decades, the epidemiology of ZCL has evolved significantly, particularly in its temporal patterns and the persistence of transmission in major endemic provinces. In this study, we adopted a retrospective observational approach to explore the long-term spatiotemporal dynamics of ZCL across nine endemic provinces in Morocco and to assess its potential enviro

Coupled Atlantic atmosphere-ocean variability modulates cutaneous leishmaniasis in North Africa, enabling long-lead seasonal forecasts.

Early warning systems for climate-driven diseases require predictors with sufficient lead time, a persistent challenge for many diseases and regions. While coupled atmosphere-ocean phenomena offer a potential solution, they remain largely underexploited in temperate zones. Here, we establish a multiscale connection between cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) dynamics in North Africa, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV). Beyond the NAO's influence on seasonal rainfall, we uncover low-frequency variability in the NAO-AMV system that modulates interannua

First molecular detection of Leishmania major in the Greater Egyptian Jerboa (Jaculus orientalis) in Algeria (Djelfa).

Zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) caused by Leishmania major is a major public health concern in Algeria, a recognized endemic hotspot. The parasite is maintained in a transmission cycle involving Phlebotomus papatasi sand flies as vectors and rodents as reservoirs, primarily Psammomys obesus and Meriones shawi. Investigating additional rodent species is essential to better understand transmission dynamics in emerging foci. This study assessed the potential role of wild rodent species as reservoirs of Leishmania parasites in the emerging focus of leishmaniasis in Djelfa, located in the Al

Epidemiological and clinical features of leishmaniasis in a tertiary hospital in the state of Paraná, Brazil.

American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) is an endemic disease in Brazil, but comprehensive reports on its epidemiology and clinical characteristics remain limited. The potential shifts in the disease's epidemiological profile emphasize the need for updated and in-depth studies. In this retrospective longitudinal observational study, we analyzed the epidemiological and clinical features of patients with ATL who received care at the Clinical Hospital Complex of the Federal University of Paraná (CHC-UFPR), a key referral center for the disease in the state of Paraná, southern Brazil, between Jun

Coinfection of Leprosy and American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: A Case Report From Ceará, Brazil.

Leprosy and American cutaneous leishmaniasis are endemic diseases in Brazil that may coexist in the same host, particularly in coendemic regions. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman presenting with a six-month history of an ulcerated lesion on the left knee and concomitant disseminated annular plaques associated with sensory loss, madarosis, and peripheral nerve thickening. Histopathological examination of the ulcer demonstrated findings compatible with cutaneous leishmaniasis; immunohistochemistry using CD1a highlighted structures compatible with amastigotes, acknowledging its limitatio

O-Glycosylated Oncofetal Fibronectin Expression in Lesions of Human Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: A Novel Finding in Infectious Diseases.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a chronic infectious disease characterized by extensive tissue destruction and profound extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling. This study provides the first evidence of O-glycosylated oncofetal fibronectin (onf-FN) expression in human CL lesions. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed increased onf-FN expression throughout the inflammatory lesions, displaying a distribution pattern closely resembling that observed in human tumors and overlapping with total fibronectin expression. The detection of onf-FN in an infectious disease caused by protozoan parasites broad

Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene: The study that proved the causative agent of Sri Lankan cutaneous leishmaniasis is Leishmania donovani.

This commentary discusses a landmark study carried out in 2002 in Sri Lanka that demonstrated Sri Lankan cutaneous leishmaniasis is indeed a disease of concern and the causative parasite is the same species that causes visceral leishmaniasis in India and West Africa. This study transformed the landscape of parasitic disease research in Sri Lanka. Finally, nearly 2 decades later, a national control program is now in place to prevent and control the spread of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the country.

Placentas from healthy women living in a cutaneous leishmaniasis endemic region in Mexico harbor Leishmania mexicana parasites: Potential implications for pregnancy and neonatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Women living in leishmaniasis-endemic zones are regularly exposed to the sandfly vector in their environments. While case series and laboratory evidence consistently suggest transplacental transmission of Leishmania parasites with deleterious maternal-fetal effects, this issue has received insufficient attention, particularly in areas where the predominant Leishmania species is mainly associated with cutaneous disease. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted an exploratory cross-sectional study in a highly endemic zone of Tabasco, Mexico, enrolling 53 women with singleton ter

Leishmanicidal efficacy of cold atmospheric multiple plasma jet against Leishmania major in a murine model: effects on parasite burden, cytokine profiles, and wound healing.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical disease with limited effective treatments options due to drug toxicity, emerging resistance, and complex therapeutic regimens. The Cold Atmospheric Multiple Plasma Jet (CAMPJ) has recently gained attention as a novel therapeutic modality because it generates reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, with antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activity. This study evaluates the therapeutic efficacy of CAMPJ in a BALB/c mouse model of CL, focusing on its leishmanicidal, wound-healing, and immunomodulatory effects. Female BALB/c mice were inoculated wi

Modeling parasite clearance and transmission delays in American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis transmission dynamics.

American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) is a multi-host vector-borne disease with complex transmission dynamics involving sand fly vectors, reservoirs, and incidental hosts. In this study, we develop and analyze two delay differential equation (DDE) models to explore the role of biological time delays in ACL transmission dynamics. The first model incorporates a delay in the parasite clearance term of the incidental host, reflecting the minimum parasite clearance time between infection and recovery. The second model introduces a delay that represents delays in skin lesion development following e
