"Keyboard sign" and "coffee bean sign" in the prenatal diagnosis of ileal atresia: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Ileal atresia is a congenital abnormality where there is significant stenosis or complete absence of a portion of the ileum. The overall diagnostic accuracy of prenatal ultrasound in detecting jejunal and ileal atresia is low. We report a case of ileal atresia diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound examination with the "keyboard sign" and "coffee bean sign". CASE SUMMARY: We report a case of ileal atresia diagnosed in utero at 31 weeks' of gestation. Prenatal ultrasound examination revealed two rows of intestines arranged in an 'S' shape in the middle abdomen. The inner diameters were

Duodenal atresia with apple peel associated with congenital diaphragmatic hernia: an exceptional case and a literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Duodenal atresia associated with apple peel is extremely rare. Duodenal atresia occurs as a result of absence of recanalization at an early stage, whereas intestinal atresia is seemingly due to vascular causes at later stages. The presence of abnormalities associated with diaphragmatic hernia is frequent, but association with duodenal atresia has been little explored. CASE REPORT: This is the case of a female neonate born at gestational week 31, with duodenal atresia and apple peel, associated with left diaphragmatic hernia and major heart disease. An abdominal muscle flap was p

Gastroschisis with gastric perforation and jejunal stenosis A rare association of anomalies.

AIM: Gastroschisis with prenatal gastric perforation and intestinal stenosis is a rare and serious anomaly. although there are several case reports, no case series exists to suggest the prognosis for these infants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this report a case of gastroschisis with gastric perforation and jejunal stenosis in male newborn is presented with literature review. The stomach, small bowel and the part of the colon were herniated through the abdominal wall defect. A large perforation site at the anterior wall of fundus and a thin fibrous strip that causing stenosis of jejunum was found

Bowel vaginoplasty in children and young women: an institutional experience with 55 patients.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Absence of a vagina owing to congenital Mullerian defects or other acquired causes requires reconstruction of the female genital passage. We present our experience using various bowel segments. METHODS: Bowel vaginoplasty was performed in 55 patients from January 2004 through May 2014 for cervicovaginal atresia (20), Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome (20), distal vaginal atresia (8), cloaca (2), cervical atresia (1), complex urogenital sinus (1), transverse vaginal septum (1), rhabdomyosarcoma of the vagina (1), and traumatic stricture of the vagina (

Duodenal stenosis in a child.

We present a case of incomplete duodenal obstruction having a delayed presentation, making diagnosis and early intervention more challenging. Failure of recanalization of the duodenal lumen during the eighth to tenth week of gestation, results in duodenal atresia. Incomplete recanalization can lead to duodenal stenosis or the presence of a duodenal web. In the absence of other serious anomalies or prematurity, the overall survival for duodenal stenosis or atresia is nearly 100%.

Transverse retubularized ileal vaginoplasty: a new application of the Monti principle--preliminary report.

OBJECTIVE: The surgical management of the absence of the vagina is a complex problem and constitutes a significant technical challenge. Herein we present our successful experience with vaginal reconstruction by the use of a modified ileal segment according to the Monti principle. METHODS: Six patients aged from 23 to 41 years (mean 33 years) were referred to our institution for vaginal stenosis. In our series, ileum has been used to create the neovagina: the isolated segment has been longitudinally detubularized and transversally retubularized in order to configure the roof of the neovagina.

Isolated small intestinal atresias in Latin America and Spain: epidemiological analysis.

Stenosis, atresia, or absence of part of the duodenum, jejunum, or ileum are generally considered small intestinal atresias (SIAs). SIAs occur as isolated defects, in combination with other unrelated congenital anomalies, or as part of syndromes. We performed an epidemiological study of infants with isolated SIAs using data from two large congenital defects registries, one from Latin America (ECLAMC) and the other from Spain (ECEMC). The overall prevalence of SIAs is similar in both programs, being 1.32 per 10,000 livebirths in Spain and 1.29 per 10.000 livebirths in Latin America. Our results

Vaginal replacement in children and young adults.

PURPOSE: Absence of the vagina in the pediatric population most commonly results from congenital abnormalities, such as the Mayer-Rokitansky syndrome but it may also be seen after treatment for pelvic tumors, such as rhabdomyosarcoma, and in patients who have had previous gender reassignment. We review our experience using bowel for vaginal replacement in a group of children and young adults to assess outcome and satisfaction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 1980 to 1996 we evaluated 31 patients 1 to 20 years old who required vaginal replacement. Presenting diagnoses included müllerian failure (t

Chronic pancreatitis and congenital strictures of the pancreatic duct.

Chronic pancreatitis may occasionally be due to chronic incomplete obstruction of the pancreatic duct. Pancreas divisum is associated with a high incidence of recurrent pancreatitis or pancreatic pain, which may be due to relative stenosis of the accessory papilla through which most of the pancreatic secretions drain. Stenosis of the pancreatic duct at the site of fusion of he ventral and dorsal ducts has been demonstrated in 3 percent of autopsy subjects and in patients studied with ERCP. Two patients with idiopathic chronic pancreatitis presented with dilatation of the pancreatic duct which

Functional and metabolic evaluation of colon replacement of the esophagus in children.

Thirteen children with esophageal replacement with colon interposition have been followed at the University of Florida Medical Center between 1962 and 1976. Eight of these patients were evaluated with a detailed functional and metabolic protocol, four requiring colon interposition for esophageal atresia and four for esophageal strictures. Growth was noted to be somewhat delayed in the patients with esophageal atresia, especially those with associated congenital anomalies. Otherwise, excellent functional results were obtained. Significant anemia with depressed serum iron concentrations was note
