Rare Groin Hernias With Unusual Sac Contents: A Systematic Review of Anatomical Variants and Surgical Implications.

Groin hernias are commonly encountered in general surgical practice. Most of these hernias have a typical anatomical structure and contain the usual type of hernia sac content. Still, in some rare cases, a hernia may show abnormal anatomy or contain unexpected material within the sac, which can affect both how it presents clinically and the surgical approach needed for treatment. This systematic review seeks to give an overview of rare groin hernias with unusual sac contents, detail their anatomical variations, describe their clinical features and diagnostic difficulties, and discuss the impli

Author's Response to "Letter to the Editor: Sex Imbalance and the Interpretation of Tamsulosin Efficacy in Hip Fracture Surgery".

AIM AND BACKGROUND: To study the procedure-related complications and outcomes of intrauterine transfusion (IUT) in fetal anemia. METHODS: A single tertiary care center, retrospective observational study of severe fetal anemia treated with IUT. The influence of gestational age (GA) at transfusion, hydrops, and route of transfusion on procedure-related complications were studied and the postnatal outcomes were recorded. RESULTS: A total of 59 IUT's were performed in 33 anemic fetuses. Rh isoimmunization (30/33) was the most common indication in 90.9%. The mean GA of fetuses who developed proce

Perforated Meckel's Diverticulum With Dual Gastric and Pancreatic Heterotopia: A Pediatric Case Report.

Meckel's diverticulum is a common congenital gastrointestinal anomaly that can lead to life-threatening complications such as perforation. While rare in children, a perforated Meckel's diverticulum often mimics acute appendicitis, posing a significant diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a five-year-old male who presented with acute right lower quadrant pain, hematochezia, vomiting, and signs of peritonitis. Emergency laparotomy was performed, which confirmed a perforated Meckel's diverticulum densely adherent to the ascending colon. Histopathological examination of the resected specime

Supporting Health Care Professions Learners Experiencing Grief Using the TEARS Framework: A Workshop for Interprofessional Educators.

INTRODUCTION: Health care professionals experience grief reactions as part of their work, yet education in processing these experiences is limited. Learners are particularly vulnerable, as they are known to experience strong emotional reactions and often lack tools or space to process difficult experiences. To address this gap, we developed a novel workshop introducing a structured approach to help educators support learners experiencing grief. METHODS: We conducted a 1-hour virtual workshop at 2 pediatric institutions for interprofessional health professions educators. Facilitators introduce

A Rare Case of Gangrenous Meckel's Diverticulum and Acute Appendicitis Presenting As Closed-Loop Obstruction in a Young Adult.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, arising from incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct. Although often asymptomatic, it can present with life-threatening complications such as inflammation, bleeding, intestinal obstruction, and perforation. Closed-loop obstruction secondary to Meckel's diverticulum is rare, and its coexistence with acute appendicitis is exceptionally uncommon, posing a diagnostic challenge. We report the case of a 22-year-old male who presented to the emergency department with a two-day history of diffuse abdominal

Concurrent Amyand and Littre Hernias With Incidental Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Diagnostic and Surgical Challenge.

We report a rare case of a 62-year-old man with a right giant inguinoscrotal hernia and a concurrent retroperitoneal mass. Preoperative imaging was inconclusive regarding the hernia sac contents and the nature of the pelvic mass. Intraoperatively, the hernia sac contained the caecum, appendix, Meckel's diverticulum (MD) and terminal ileum-confirming the simultaneous presence of Amyand and Littre hernias. Additionally, a left-sided retroperitoneal solid-cystic mass was identified and excised. This case underscores the diagnostic difficulties posed by complex hernias and highlighted the surgical

Rare causes of acute abdomen in a paediatric surgery department: a 5-years review.

AIMS: Acute abdomen is a common indication to surgery in paediatric emergency departments. Appendicitis is the most frequent diagnosis, followed by bowel obstruction and female genital conditions. Some rare aetiologies may lead to challenges in surgical management. Aim of this study is to analyse the distribution of rare causes of acute abdomen in patients undergoing emergency surgery in the past five years at our centre. METHODS: Records of patients undergone urgent abdominal surgery were retrospectively reviewed from 2015 to 2019. Information relative to age, sex, underlying pathology, and

Advancing enhanced recovery after surgery protocols for pediatric laparoscopic-assisted small intestinal malformation repair.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols in pediatric patients undergoing laparoscopic-assisted resection for Meckel’s diverticulum (MD) or intestinal duplication (ID). METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on 96 pediatric patients who underwent laparoscopic-assisted resection for MD or ID at our institution between January 2017 and July 2025, covering the periods pre- and post-ERAS implementation. Patients were stratified into two groups: the ERAS group (n = 49), managed per ERAS protocols, and the tradi

Meckel's diverticulum Imaging: In and Out.

Meckels diverticulum (MD) is the commonest among the omphalomesenteric duct anomaly spectrum with an overall incidence of 2-3% . It is a true diverticulum arising on the antimesenteric side of distal ileum approximately 2 feet from the ileocecal junction. Heterotopic gastric and pancreatic mucosa are commonly found within the diverticulum predisposing to bleeding and inflammation. Complications are more common in male and the type of complication differs based on the age of occurrence and include hemorrhage, inflammation, obstruction, ischemia and tumor formation. Due to overlapping clinical p

Ruptured Meckel's diverticulum in a healthy young adult: a rare cause of acute abdomen and bowel perforation.

Meckel's diverticulum is the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, though it rarely presents with perforation in adulthood. Clinical presentation may often mimic more benign conditions, delaying diagnosis. We present the case of a healthy male patient in his early thirties who presented with abdominal discomfort, nausea and vomiting, following a few days of loose stools attributed to viral gastroenteritis. The patient was haemodynamically stable apart from mild tachycardia. Computed tomography (CT) imaging revealed pneumoperitoneum and free pelvic fluid, suggesting bowel

Intestinal Duplication Cyst Mimicking Meckel Diverticulum: The Role of Tc-99m Pertechnetate SPECT-CT in Rapid Diagnosis.

Duplication cysts are a rare disease that can occur in the gastrointestinal tract, from the duodenum to the rectum. In our young case with massive gastrointestinal bleeding, we performed Meckel scintigraphy using Tc-99m pertechnetate to rule out ectopic gastric tissue, along with SPECT-CT and planar images. This case is presented in terms of the anatomical correlation in a single study and its importance in making a rapid diagnosis.

Clinical analysis of Meckel diverticulum with ectopic pancreas in children: 3 case reports.

RATIONALE: Lower gastrointestinal bleeding caused by Meckel diverticulum (MD) with ectopic pancreas is rare and diagnostically challenging in children, particularly due to the frequent absence of gastric mucosa leading to negative Technetium pertechnetate. This study aimed to summarize and analyze the clinical characteristics and management of this condition. PATIENT CONCERNS: A retrospective analysis included 3 pediatric patients (2 males, 1 female; aged 2-13 years) treated between July 2013 and March 2023. All presented with hematochezia as the primary symptom. One case was accompanied by a

Prolapsed Meckel's diverticulum through an intact omphalocele sac.

A full-term male neonate presented at birth with a small omphalocele and a mucosa-lined tubular structure protruding from the margin of an intact sac. Clinical examination revealed no additional anomalies. Surgical exploration identified the protruding structure as a Meckel's diverticulum arising from the distal ileum. Tangential resection with transverse primary closure was performed, followed by excision of the omphalocele sac and umbilicoplasty. Histopathological examination confirmed Meckel's diverticulum without ectopic mucosa. The postoperative course was uneventful, with good functional

A case report of double Meckel's diverticulum with a mobile cecum.

BACKGROUND: Meckel’s diverticulum is the most prevalent congenital malformation of the gastrointestinal tract. However, the coexistence of double Meckel’s diverticula and a mobile cecum is rare and has rarely been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old male presented with melena, and his condition subsequently deteriorated, with a blood pressure of 73/57 mmHg and a heart rate of 56 beats/min. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a giant blind lumen filled with hematoma and malposition of the right colon. The patient underwent an emergency surgery. Although a sma

Perforation of Meckel's diverticulum with ectopic gastric mucosa.

Meckel's diverticulum is a congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract that occurs in approximately 2% of the population. It is the result of incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct (ductus omphaloentericus). During the fetal period, this duct connects the yolk sac with the primitive intestine and normally closes around the 5th-7th week of gestation. It is a true diverticulum because it contains all layers of the intestinal wall. Most diverticula are asymptomatic; however, they may lead to serious complications such as inflammation, perforation, obstruction, and bleeding. Our case r

Neurologic Presentations of Pediatric Intussusception Lead to Diagnostic Delay and Increased Need for Surgery.

BackgroundNeurological presentations of pediatric intussusception lead to delayed diagnosis, higher rates of surgical intervention, and worse outcomes compared with classic presentations. These atypical manifestations, including lethargy, altered mental status, and rarely movement disorders, may predominate and redirect evaluation toward primary neurological etiologies, delaying recognition of this reversible surgical emergency.Case PresentationA previously healthy 2-year-old boy presented with clustered orofacial dyskinesias and irregular upper-extremity jerks without exposure to dopamine-rec

[A Case of Incidentally Resected Neuroendocrine Tumor in a Meckel's Diverticulum].

The patient was a 54-year-old man. He developed a fever during chemotherapy for recurrent lung cancer and was admitted to the respiratory medicine department in our institution with a diagnosis of febrile neutropenia. During his hospitalization, he developed anemia and black stools, and a detailed examination revealed small intestinal bleeding, leading to a partial small intestinal resection. A 3 cm-sized diverticulum was accidentally found during surgery, located 60 cm from the terminal ileum, and was also resected. Histopathological examination revealed a diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum n

Dual-mechanism small bowel obstruction from Meckel diverticulum in an 8-year-old: a case report.

We report a dual-etiology obstruction in an 8-year-old boy: congenital closed-loop small bowel obstruction (SBO) from a volvulized Meckel diverticulum tethered by an omphalomesenteric duct remnant, followed by early postoperative focal SBO from an omental band. He presented after one week of abdominal pain with worsening and non-bloody, non-bilious emesis. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed distal SBO with a mesenteric swirl. Laparoscopy confirmed a necrotic Meckel diverticulum with volvulized distal ileum; the tethering band was divided and segmental ileal resection with anastomosis
