Anorectal malformations are common congenital anomalies but diagnosis and treatment in adulthood are quite rare. Treatment during adulthood may be challenging due to anatomic and physiologic changes. Posterior sagittal anorectoplasty may provide good cosmetic and functional results even in adult patients. KEY WORDS: Congenital malformations, Rectovaginal fistula, Rectovestibular fistula.

BACKGROUND: Anal canal duplication (ACD) is a very rare duplication of the gastrointestinal tract and is described as a secondary anal orifice along the posterior side of the normal anal canal. Early surgical removal is advisable, also in asymptomatic patients, because of the risk of inflammatory complications, such as recurrent crissum abscess, and malignant changes.
CASE PRESENTATION: A previously healthy 2-year-old boy was evaluated in the emergency department with fever. He complained of anal pain in the absence of incentive. Physical examination and ultrasound confirmed a diagnosis of pe

Background Colonic duplication may present in different anatomic variants. The surgical approach towards these anomalies can be challenging and has implications for subsequent future continence. Case Description We report on a 1-year-old girl with congenital heart defect and pacemaker who was referred to us with an anorectal malformation. The patient was stooling from both an anus and a perineal fistula. Examination under anesthesia revealed an orthotopic and age-appropriate sized anus with surrounding sphincter and a second rectal lumen ending as a perineal fistula. A computed tomography and

BACKGROUND: An Anorectal Malformation (ARM) is a rare congenital malformation, which requires proper correction to ensure the best long-term prognosis. These procedures are relatively infrequent and complex, in which a structured approach is important. Therefore, training on an affordable model could be beneficial.
METHODS: A low-cost ARM model was developed. The base was reusable and the perineal body disposable. Both expert pediatric surgeons (Experts) and residents/fellows (Target group) were recruited for this study. After testing the model, they completed a questionnaire regarding the re

Persistent cloaca is a rare and severe variety of anorectal malformation, which is more common in females and includes a spectrum of abnormalities. The urinary tract, genital tract and rectum open into a common channel, which exteriorises as a single perineal opening. We are reporting a patient with a novel variation in the classical anatomy of the cloaca. The child has a short blind-ending colon with a cecovesical fistula associated with mullerian agenesis and lipomyelomeningocoele. The child is being managed in a stepwise approach and she has completed the anal reconstruction. Here, we discu

The vagina is a median fibromuscular structure of the female reproductive system that extends from the vulva inferiorly to the uterine cervix superiorly. As most vaginal lesions are detected at gynecologic examination, imaging performed for nongynecologic indications can frequently cause concomitant vaginal pathologic conditions to be overlooked. The vagina is often underevaluated at routinely performed pelvic transvaginal US because of a narrow scan area and probe positioning. MRI has progressively become the imaging method of choice for vaginal pathologic conditions, as it provides excellent

PURPOSE: The rectovaginal fistula (RVF) is a type of female ARM in which the rectum terminates in the vagina. Due to its rarity, there are limited reports on its presentation, management, and follow-up. This paper deals with the clinical presentation, management, and outcome of RVF.
METHODS: It was a retrospective cohort study of 10 years. The patients were evaluated for age, clinical presentation, associated anomalies, any prior surgical interventions performed elsewhere, and complications. After workup, the patients underwent three stages of surgery.
RESULTS: Fifty-six patients of RVF were

BACKGROUND: Postoperative rectourethral fistula (RUF) in patients with congenital anorectal malformation (ARM) remains a challenge for paediatric surgeons, among them persistent fistula is the most common. Various techniques have been proposed, only a few reports based on different causes are available, and there is no consensus so far. This study is to evaluate the application, advantages and limitations of transanal fistulectomy approach in repairing persistent RUF in ARM patients.
METHODS: From January 2007 to July 2019, 78 ARM patients who received revisional surgery for RUF were reviewed

INTRODUCTION: An anorectal malformation (ARM) is a congenital malformation that requires surgical correction. To acquire the skills needed to perform this complex procedure, an affordable simulation model has previously been developed and validated. The aim of this study is to evaluate the suitability of this ARM model (with perineal fistula) for training in hands-on workshops.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ARM model consists of a wooden casing with disposable perineal body. Participants in several international pediatric colorectal hands-on workshops in 2019 and 2020 were asked to participate.

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are a group of congenital malformations affecting the lower gastrointestinal, urogenital, and/or gynecological systems. They occur in approximately 1 in 5000 live births, with a slight male predominance. ARMs can appear in isolation or in association with other anomalies. The literature contains little information about the characteristics of ARMs in United States Hispanic populations.
METHODS: An institutional review board-approved chart review was conducted in all patients with ARMs seen at a single institution in El Paso, Texas, from January 2012

Anorectal malformation or imperforate anus is a congenital anomaly of rectum and anus. Mullerian duct anomalies are abnormal development of uterus, cervix, and vagina. Imperforate anus with double uterus is extremely rare and cannot explain by normal embryologic development. Moreover, guideline in treatment is inconclusive. We report an extremely rare case of a young adult female who presented with recurrent pelvic inflammatory disease caused by rectovaginal fistula in congenital imperforate anus and didelphys uterus, and successfully neoanal reconstruction with gracilis muscle flap. Long term survival of animals with major congenital anomalies is very rare. This report documents the 18-month survival of a dog with multiple anomalies including atresia ani. An 18-month-old black Cocker Spaniel bitch was presented for evaluation of prolapsed glands of the third eyelid involving both the eyes. Clinical examination revealed a single perineal opening, fecal matter in the vestibule, distended abdomen, hypoplastic vulva, and the absence of a tail without any neurological deficits. Abdominal contrast radiography revealed a distended colon with fecal stasis, rectovestibular fistula

Anorectal malformations present a type of the most serious congenital malformations, either in terms of treatment or treatment outcomes. Anorectal atresia can be subdivided into three categories: the supralevator form, the intermediate type of atresia and the low translevator type. One of the clinical forms of low translevator type in girls is a perineal fistula opening just behind the vaginal entrance on the perineum, with a fully developed sphincter complex dorsally from the fistula (so called anus perinei ventralis). The golden standard of surgical treatment of anus perinei ventralis in chi

BACKGROUND: Müllerian duct anomaly is a rare condition. Many cases remain unidentified, especially if asymptomatic. Thus, it is difficult to determine the actual incidence. Müllerian duct anomaly is associated with a wide range of gynecological and obstetric complications, namely infertility, endometriosis, urinary tract anomalies, and preterm delivery. Furthermore, congenital anomalies in pregnant mothers have a high risk of being genetically transmitted to their offspring.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a patient with unsuspected müllerian duct anomaly in a term pregnancy. A 33-year

BACKGROUND: Congenital pouch colon (CPC) is a rare variant of anorectal malformation. In male patients, CPC communicates distally with the urogenital tract by a large fistula. The CPC cases which do not fulfill the criteria as mentioned in the classical description are reported along with the pertinent literature review.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study from January 2004 to December 2017 of male children with Type IV CPC. We evaluated clinical presentation, primary management, anatomical relationship, previous surgical intervention, definitive management, result, and outc

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are major congenital malformations occurring in female children in approximately 1 out of every 4000-5000 births. Posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) was introduced for their treatment in early 1980s by Pena and Devries. However, anterior sagittal anorectoplasty (ASARP) was first introduced by Okada as a modification of the previous technique.
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to report our experience and the long-term follow-up results of 594 female patients with anorectal malformations treated by anterior sagittal anorectoplasty (ASARP) in a

The standard treatment of high variety anorectal malformation (ARM) is the staged approach. A growing interest in one stage correction of high variety ARM was noted recently. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility, safety and outcome of single stage correction of High variety ARM. This prospective study was carried out in the Department of Paediatric Surgery, Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH), Mymensingh, Bangladesh from July 2012 to September 2013. It was conducted among 30 patients, all having high ARM. The type of ARM was diagnosed by clinical examinations and imaging

BACKGROUND: Anterior sagittal anorectoplasty (ASARP) has been a standardised operative treatment for anorectal malformation (ARM). This retrospective study was undertaken to evaluate patients with perineal fistula (PF) and vestibular fistula (VF) treated by ASARP in our institution.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients (PF, n = 14; male, n = 8 and female, n = 6 and VF, n = 6) were evaluated. Eighteen patients underwent primary ASARP without protective colostomy. Two patients underwent colostomy because of intestinal atresia and suspected of other type ARM. The age range of operation was from

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations (ARMs) are congenital defects affecting the distal gastrointestinal tract and anus with frequent fistulous connections to the genitourinary system. The spectrum of the disease is considerably wide, and thus, an individualised approach to its management is required. There are few recent publications about the burden of this malformation in Africa and the outcome of surgical intervention. We present our experiences with the management of ARM, peculiar challenges and the outcome at a tertiary hospital catering for the Northern and Central parts of Ghana.
