BACKGROUND: Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD) is a rare disease in which multiple smooth muscle or smooth muscle-like nodules develop subperitoneally in any part of the abdominal cavity. No reports of multiple congenital malformations associated with LPD have been found in the English literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27 year-old patient referred to our gynaecology unit for pelvic pain, amenorrhoea, stress incontinence, chronic constipation and recurrent intestinal and urinary infections. Multiple congenital malformations had previously been diagnosed. Most of these had required su

Anorectal atresia, which is classified as a low anorectal malformation, is characterised by the absence of the anal verge and by variable rectal atresia. In some cases, which have been classified as rectal agenesis, the atresia is associated with the absence of the internal sphincter. The therapeutic options are definitely surgical, aiming to relieve the bowel occlusion and to restore faecal continence by lowering the cul-de-sac to the perineum. We present the case of an adult patient with congenital rectal agenesis, double fistula (cul-de-sac-urethra and cul-de-sac-perineum) and caecostomy si

PURPOSE: Rectal prolapse is a known postoperative problem in children with anorectal malformations. The aims of this study were to determine the incidence of significant rectal prolapse (>5 mm), to objectively quantify its predisposing factors, and to offer recommendations as to its prevention and surgical treatment.
METHODS: The authors reviewed their series of 1619 patients with anorectal malformations; 1169 underwent primary posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) at their institution between 1980 and 2002, and complete records were available for 833. The series was analyzed for incidenc

Anorectal malformations are one of the common congenital anomalies encountered in the newborn period. The plethora of anomalies described makes it a complex subject for embryological explanations. Fistulous communications between the blind rectum and the urinary tract are common in boys with high/intermediate anomalies, but it is uncommon in children with low anorectal malformations, more so a double fistula. We are reporting a case of 'ano-uerthro-cutaneous fistula' associated with a low ano rectal malformation.

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations (ARM) are common congenital anomalies seen throughout the world. Comparison of outcome data has been hindered because of confusion related to classification and assessment systems.
METHODS: The goals of the Krinkenbeck Conference on ARM was to develop standards for an International Classification of ARM based on a modification of fistula type and adding rare and regional variants, and design a system for comparable follow up studies.
RESULTS: Lesions were classified into major clinical groups based on the fistula location (perineal, recto-urethral, recto-v

UNLABELLED: Anorectal malformations constitute the most varied group of congenital defects. Constant challenge for the surgeon being engaged in this subject are the studies of new factors which could improve the functional results of treatment.
AIM: The aim of the study was the evaluation of late results after surgical treatment in children with anorectal anomalies. Assessment of the qualification criteria for the kind of surgical repair: one-stage (OSR) or stage repair (SR), age of the patient at the end of treatment and accompanying sacral bone defects were taken into consideration as the f

This case report describes an extremely premature infant who was born with a high anorectal malformation requiring a colostomy soon after birth. He later developed multiple episodes of acute urinary retention complicated by bilateral hydronephrosis and acute renal failure. The cause of the retention was found to be the prolapsing stoma, which was kinking the bladder neck.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP) was introduced in 1982, by Pena and de Vries, as a new surgical procedure for patients with anorectal malformations. It was supposed to provide better chance for normal fecal continence.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 1991 and 2000, 50 patients with anorectal abnormalities underwent PSARP. In 43 patients PSARP was primary operation and in 7 it was a secondary procedure. At the time of study patients were not younger than 3, and not older than 13 years. Patients and their parents were interviewed, and fecal continence was graded as follows

The study was carried out to determine the characteristics and outcome of management of anorectal malformations (ARM) in Nigerian children at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, between January 1986 and December 2002. Eighty-six children with ARM were studied, 48 males and 38 females. Only 12 (13.9%) presented to the hospital within 24 h of birth. Twenty-four (27.9%) patients had one or more associated congenital anomalies, with oesophageal atresia with tracheo-oesophageal fistula being the most common associated malformation. A low variety w

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The Currarino syndrome (CS) is a peculiar form of caudal regression syndrome (CRS) characterized by the association of hemisacrum, anorectal malformation (ARM), and presacral mass. The authors analyzed retrospectively their series, and they propose a multidisciplinary diagnostic and therapuetic protocol that until now has not been introduced.
METHODS: A series of 6 patients with CS is presented. Five of them were treated initially in other centers. None of them had an early diagnosis. All presented associated anomalies; in 50%, Hirschsprung's disease (HD) and other dysgang

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the incidences of various associated anomalies among subjects with high and low anorectal malformation (ARM), study the coexistence of these anomalies, and compare their frequency with those quoted in the existing literature.
METHODS: Ten years of data (from January 1993 through December 2002) on the 416 subjects from our center with anorectal malformations (ARM) were evaluated. The subjects with supra or translevator rectal pouch (radiologic or operative findings) were classified as high ARM and the rest as low ARM. The associated anom

Ten children with a tethered cord and also an anorectal malformation are reported in this document. The anorectal malformations comprised 5 vesicointestinal fissures, 2 cloacal exstrophies, 2 rectovesical fistulas and 1 rectobulbar fistula. All of the patients underwent colostomy in advance of surgery for untethering of the spinal cord. Although their neurologic deficits had previously been considered static, they were subjected to radiographic examination of the caudal spine and found to have a tethered cord. These 10 children were among 55 children with a tethered cord surgically treated at

The objective of this study was to determine whether anorectal malformations (ARMs) and anterior sacral myelomeningocele share the same embryogenic pathway in a mouse model. Etretinate (Ro 10-9359) was administrated to C57BL/6 mice on gestation day 9 (E9). Sections of embryos and fetuses from E9.5 to E18 were observed by HE staining. Immunohistochemical staining with anti-NeuN and anti-GFAP was also done to determine cell origins of a presacral mass. In etretinate-treated embryos, neuroepithelial cells proliferated in the presacral region on E9.5. On E12, a canal appeared between the ectopic p

Congenital anorectal abnormalities were diagnosed in three male and three female dogs. One dog had anal stenosis, three had a persistent anal membrane, and the other two had an imperforate anus associated with a rectovaginal fistula. Five of the dogs were treated surgically, and four of them which were followed up for periods ranging from one to five years continued to pass faeces normally.

A 10-day old male calf exhibited multiple congenital anomalies of the urinary and gastrointestinal tracts, including renal fusion (horseshoe kidney), ureteral fusion, rectovesicular fistula, and atresia ani. In horseshoe kidney, the organs were fused together at the caudal poles. The left kidney and cranial half of right kidney were shrunken, while the remaining lobules were hypertrophic. Ureters were fused cranially and bifurcated caudally. The terminal rectum was narrowed and connected with the bladder. The anus was imperforate. The cause of these anomalies could not be determined.

MURCS association is rare, first described by Duncan in 1979, including nonrandom association of Mullerian duct aplasia or hypoplasia (MU), renal agenesis or ectopy (R), and cervicothoracic somite dysplasia. A 5-year-old girl was admitted to the clinic with a complaint of anteriorly located anus. Physical and radiologic examination of the patient found MURCS association with anorectal malformation (ARM) of rectovestibular-type fistula. She had multiple vertebral anomalies, left renal agenesis, vaginal and uterine agenesia, with a normal female 46,XX karyotype. Posterior sagittal anorectoplasty

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the spectrum of developmental anomalies in the caudal region of patients with anorectal malformations (ARM) and relate them to the new insights in the embryogenesis of this region.
METHODS: Forty-nine patients with ARM were investigated with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); 24 preoperatively (preop) and 25 postoperatively (postop). Of this group, 17 patients had a high (or intermediate) ARM, 28 a low ARM, and 4 a cloacal malformation (CM). The evaluation of the imaging studies included the level and type of ARM (preop); the developmental state o
