Congenital hypoganglionosis: phenotype-based outcomes and evolution of diagnosis and management-a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Congenital hypoganglionosis (CH) is a rare enteric neuropathy characterized by reduced and small ganglion cells in the myenteric plexus. We aimed to systematically review the clinical outcomes and diagnostic evolution of CH in children. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines using PubMed and Web of Science (1978-2025). Of 396 identified records, 32 studies including 298 pediatric patients were analyzed. Disease extent was classified as diffuse/panintestinal, colon-limited, segmental, or unspecified. RESULTS: Among 298 patients, 144 (48%) were

Sirolimus for diffuse intestinal infantile hemangioma with PHACE features: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: We report a 3-month-old female with cardiovascular anomalies and diffuse intestinal infantile hemangioma (IIH) of the small bowel suggesting possible diagnosis of PHACE syndrome (posterior fossa anomalies, hemangioma, arterial lesions, cardiac abnormalities/coarctation of the aorta, eye anomalies). The GI symptoms persisted under treatment with propranolol, whereas the addition of sirolimus led to regression of the IIH. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, and Ovid MEDLINE databases between 1982 and 2021. RESULTS: A total of 4933 articles were identifi

Systematic review of Meckel's diverticulum in pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital malformation in the gastrointestinal tract. Limited up-to-date evidence is available regarding MD in pregnancy. We aim to review the available pertinent literature to help support clinical decision making and patient management in the future. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The search term 'Meckel's diverticulum' was combined with 'pregnant' or 'pregnancy'. Database searches of EMBASE, Medline and PubMed were conducted. All papers published in English from 01/01/1990 to 01/01/2021 were included. Simple statistical analysis (t-test)

An Assessment of 30-Day Complications in Primary Cleft Palate Repair: A Review of the 2012 ACS NSQIP Pediatric.

OBJECTIVE: This study uses the American College of Surgeons Pediatric National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP Pediatric), a multicenter database, to identify risk factors for complications after cleft palate repair. DESIGN: Patients undergoing Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes 42200 and 42205 were extracted from the 2012 ACS NSQIP Pediatric. Patients older than 36 months or those who had undergone an additional surgery that altered the risk were excluded. Outcome variables were combined to create a complication variable. Fisher's exact, Pearson chi-square, and Wilcox

Hydrops fetalis in the stillborn: a series from the central region of Thailand.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the cause of hydrops fetalis (HF) among fetal deaths in the central region of Thailand. Autopsy reports diagnosed as HF from 1999 to 2008 at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital were retrieved, and the pathologic findings, clinical information, fetal ultrasonographic studies, and laboratory investigations were reviewed. There were 78 stillborn autopsies during this 10-year period; the mean gestational age was 28 weeks. The causes of fetal hydrops were identified in 88.5%; no cases of immune hydrops were detected. Anemia was the predominant cause of HF (

A large duplication cyst of the stomach in an adult presenting as pancreatic pseudocyst.

Intestinal duplication is a rare congenital disease. It appears throughout the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the ileum. Here we describe the rare case of a gastric duplication cyst in a 59-year-old patient. Diagnostic findings and surgical therapy are discussed. Gastric duplications in adults are extremely rare, and diagnosis is often missed. Symptoms are unspecified pain in the upper abdomen, vomiting and fever, with some patients having weight loss. Complications are rare. Chronic infections and ruptures are described. For diagnosis, CT scan with oral contrast is preferred. Endoscopy

Further experience with the antireflux valve to prevent ascending cholangitis in biliary atresia.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The intussusception-type antireflux valve is a mechanism introduced by Nakajo, who reported the results of his initial 17 cases in 1990. This report summarizes our further experience with new patients, together with follow-up results of the cases previously reported by Nakajo. METHODS: In total, 46 new patients who had biliary atresia underwent portoenterostomy at the authors' two units. The authors hoped to construct the intussuscepted antireflux valve in the Roux-en-Y loop, whenever possible, at the time of hepatic portoenterostomy. RESULTS: Among the 46 patients, one c

Descriptive epidemiology of small intestinal atresia, Atlanta, Georgia.

To describe the epidemiology of small intestinal atresia (SIA) in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1968 through 1989, we used the Metropolitan Atlanta Congenital Defects Program, an active, population-based surveillance system for birth defects diagnosed during the first year of life. We identified 176 infants with SIA, a prevalence of 2.8 per 10,000 livebirths. Among black infants, the prevalence was 3.7 per 10,000 livebirths, significantly higher than the prevalence of 2.4 per 10,000 among white infants [relative risk (RR) = 1.6, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.1,2.1]. Nine infants were each one memb
