Evaluation of prenatal genetic aberrations in fetuses with gallbladder abnormalities: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread application of chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) in prenatal diagnosis, fetal gallbladder abnormalities have been found to be associated not only with chromosomal aneuploidies but also with certain syndromes caused by submicroscopic chromosomal structural variants. This study aimed to investigate the molecular etiology of fetal gallbladder abnormalities and to provide additional evidence for clinical screening and genetic counseling regarding these anomalies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 258 fetuses diagnosed with gallbladder abno

Gallbladder Cancer: Epidemiology and Prevention.

Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is an uncommon but highly lethal malignancy, characterized by striking geographic clustering, late diagnosis, and a prevention profile that differs from other gastrointestinal malignancies. This narrative review synthesizes epidemiologic, mechanistic, clinical, and public-health evidence on GBC determinants with a prevention-oriented lens. Rather than merely cataloguing risk factors, we propose a pragmatic framework that combines epidemiologic credibility, population-attributable burden, baseline risk, biologic plausibility, feasibility, and the benefit-risk balance of

Are Gallbladder Abnormalities in Critically Ill Patients Clinically Relevant? Insights from the Medical Intensive Care Unit of a Medical Center.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder (GB) abnormalities are frequently observed in critically ill patients, but their clinical relevance remains uncertain. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of GB abnormalities and their association with clinical outcomes in patients admitted to a medical intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of adult patients admitted to the medical ICU of Changhua Christian Hospital from February to September 2023 who underwent abdominal ultrasound. Patients with prior cholecystectomy or diagnosed acute cholecystitis were excluded. Clinical vari

Gallbladder Involvement in Pediatric Hepatitis A: Findings From an Italian Outbreak Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder involvement during acute hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is generally considered an uncommon extrahepatic manifestation, although recent reports suggest it may be underrecognized. We evaluated the prevalence, clinical characteristics and outcomes of gallbladder abnormalities in a multicenter cohort of children hospitalized with acute HAV infection during an Italian outbreak. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter observational study, including consecutive children with laboratory-confirmed acute HAV infection admitted to 4 tertiary pediatric hospitals between January an

Multisystem imaging findings as diagnostic red herrings in Wilson's disease.

A previously well man in his 20s presented with fever, cough, new-onset jaundice and a right-sided pleural effusion. Initial investigations demonstrated marked hepatic synthetic dysfunction. Subsequent imaging demonstrated cirrhotic liver morphology with splenomegaly and ascites. Additional findings of gallbladder wall oedema and focal colonic wall thickening broadened the differentials but following specialist radiology review, these abnormalities were recognised as manifestations of portal hypertension rather than separate disease processes.Further investigations confirmed Wilson's disease i

Gallbladder involvement in metachromatic leukodystrophy: a systematic review and comparison of American and European surveillance recommendations.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder and biliary abnormalities are increasingly recognized extracerebral manifestations of metachromatic leukodystrophy (MLD), but their spectrum, frequency, complications, and surveillance implications remain incompletely standardized. METHODS: We performed a PRISMA 2020-based systematic review. PubMed/MEDLINE was searched from inception to 12 July 2026 using MLD terms combined with gallbladder, biliary, cholecystic, hemobilia, papillomatosis, polyp, and carcinoma terms. Eligible reports described gallbladder or biliary involvement in MLD or an MLD-like saposin B-deficient

Children With Pancreatic Hypoplasia Experience Poor Weight Gain and Labile Diabetes but Low Incidence of DKA.

CONTEXT: Pathogenic variants in GATA6, GATA4, and PDX1 cause pancreatic hypoplasia or agenesis and early onset diabetes mellitus. There is a lack of information about long-term outcomes and clinical management of these complicated patients, including how best to approach their exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), weight gain, and glycemic management. PARTICIPANTS: We investigated clinical features and treatment of patients with variants in GATA6, GATA4, and PDX1 identified through the US Monogenic Diabetes Registry. Data were self-reported or extracted from medical records. RESULTS: Elev

Differentiation of Gallbladder Adenomyomatosis and Polyps in a Western Cohort: Prevalence, Ultrasound Characteristics, and Diagnostic Challenges.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder adenomyomatosis and polyps are common benign lesions that can mimic malignancy on imaging, often leading to unnecessary cholecystectomy. Despite frequent sonographic detection, the prevalence of adenomyomatosis in living cohorts remains poorly defined. AIM: To determine the prevalence and characterize the sonographic features of gallbladder adenomyomatosis and polyps in a large unselected cohort, and to assess clinical relevance. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 2674 patients (≥ 16 years) who underwent abdominal ultrasound over 20 months. Examinations were perform

A Systematic Review of Gallbladder Anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Gallbladder anomalies are rare congenital defects resulting from developmental disruptions. These variations in shape, position, or number are often incidental findings but can present with symptomatic gallstone disease. Undiagnosed anomalies may lead to surgical complications like bile duct injuries and incomplete cholecystectomy. Despite their clinical significance, standardized guidelines remain limited. This systematic review consolidates current knowledge on classification, diagnosis, and management. METHODS: Given the rarity of gallbladder anomalies, single case reports were

The mechanism of Tibetan medicine Shibawei Niuhuang Qinggan pills in protecting against acetaminophen-induced acute liver injury in mice by regulating the Keap1-Nrf2 pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Shibawei Niuhuang Qinggan pills (གླང་ཆེན་མེ་ཏོག་བཅོ་བརྒྱད།, SBWNHQGP) is a classic representative of Tibetan medicine. It has been used in clinical practice in China for more than 400 years on the basis of Tibetan medicine theory. The Drug Standards of the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China (Tibetan Medicine) clearly records that SBWNHQGP has the effect of clearing liver heat and promoting gallbladder function. It is traditionally used for liver discomfort caused by liver heat, which includes liver pain, a bitter taste in the mouth, and jaundic

Pathophysiology Underlying Manifestation of Pancreaticobiliary Maljunction Throughout Life.

Pancreaticobiliary maljunction (PBM) is an anomaly in which the bile and pancreatic ducts join outside the area of action of the sphincter. PBM is typically accompanied by choledochal cysts (dilated PBM); however, cases of PBM without biliary dilatation (nondilated PBM) have also been reported. PBM manifests throughout life. The presentation remains unclear due to age-dependent differences in its pathophysiology. PBM symptoms may be attributed to biliary obstruction caused by substances that differ with age: calcium bilirubinate debris in neonates, protein plugs in children, and gallstones in

Acute pancreatitis and hepatitis in an 11-year-old boy following Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection: case report.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is a common cause of respiratory illness in children, but extrapulmonary involvement is uncommon and may present diagnostic challenges. Among these manifestations, hepatic injury and acute pancreatitis are rarely reported in pediatric patients. We describe the case of an 11-year-old boy who developed recurrent fever and abdominal pain after initial improvement from M. pneumoniae pneumonia. On admission, he exhibited markedly elevated aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels, along with significant increases in amylase and lipase. Abdominal

Benign hepatocellular mass in the right atrium: a rare case of ectopic liver tissue and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Liver tissue ectopia occurs in less than 1% of cases, typically in areas adjacent to the liver, such as the gallbladder or spleen. Liver tissue ectopia within the heart is even rarer. This paper reports a case of histopathologically confirmed liver tissue ectopia in the right atrium. Additionally, it summarises the characteristics of twelve previously reported similar cases, offering new insights into liver tissue ectopia within cardiac chambers. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 31-year-old female who is obese and has had three pregnancies and three caesarean sections. She was

Multistage Reconstruction of a Severe Cloacal Exstrophy Variant With Associated Myelomeningocele and Multisystem Involvement: A Case Report.

To our knowledge, this case represents one of the rarest and most severe forms of cloacal exstrophy (CE), distinguished by extensive multisystem involvement, including a large omphalocele, imperforate anus, bladder exstrophy, bilateral clubfeet, and the unusual concomitant presence of a lumbosacral myelomeningocele. This constellation of findings is exceptionally uncommon and poses significant surgical and multidisciplinary challenges from birth. Prenatal MRI demonstrated a large omphalocele containing liver, bowel, and gallbladder; a lumbar myelomeningocele (L5-S5); nonvisualization of the bl

When Breast Cancer Hides Elsewhere: Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Presenting as Gallbladder Disease.

Invasive lobular carcinoma is a type of breast cancer that is distinctive in morphology. Due to this, invasive lobular carcinoma often proves to be difficult for clinicians to detect and treat before metastasis occurs. While invasive lobular carcinoma shares common metastasis locations with other breast cancers, such as infiltrating ductal carcinoma, invasive lobular carcinoma is notorious for presenting in abnormal sites. This report will introduce an atypical case of invasive lobular carcinoma first discovered in the gallbladder. A 58-year-old female presented to the emergency department wit

Concurrent Mirizzi syndrome and choledocholithiasis: imaging features and surgical correlation.

We describe a case of concurrent Mirizzi syndrome and choledocholithiasis in a woman in her mid-60s. The abnormalities were first identified on abdominal ultrasound and subsequently confirmed with contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). Imaging demonstrated extrinsic compression of the common hepatic duct (CHD) by an impacted gallstone at the cystic duct along with concomitant calculi in the distal common bile duct (CBD). The patient underwent open cholecystectomy with CBD exploration, choledochoscopy, and choledochoduodenostomy. Thi

Absent gallbladder discovered during evaluation for biliary pain: case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Gallbladder Agenesis (GA) is a rare congenital anomaly of the biliary tract with reported incidence estimates at 0.03% in general clinical series. Although many patients are asymptomatic, up to half may present with biliary-type symptoms, creating a diagnostic challenge; routine imaging such as ultrasound or Hepatobiliary Iminodiacetic Acid scan (HIDA) may be misleading, and Magnetic Resonance Cholangio-Pancreatography (MRCP) is often required to establish the diagnosis and avoid unnecessary surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of an adult patient presenting with mild
