An-81-year-old man presented to another doctor complaining of epigastric pain. He was referred to us after the laboratory data revealed a high serum CEA and abdominal ultrasonography showed the space occupying lesion in the left liver. Abdominal CT revealed advanced gallbladder cancer infiltrating the liver and colon and found annular pancreas surrounding the descending portion of duodenum. We chose partial hepatectomy(S4a+S5), extrahepatic bile duct resection with hepaticojejunostomy and partial colectomy. Pathological diagnosis of the tumor was pT3N1M0, gallbladder cancer. The patient was di

Given its crucial location at the crossroads of the gastrointestinal tract, the hepatobiliary system and the splanchnic vessels, the duodenum can be affected by a wide spectrum of abnormalities. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, in conjunction with endoscopy, are often performed to evaluate these conditions, and several duodenal pathologies can be identified on fluoroscopic studies. Since many conditions affecting this organ are asymptomatic, the role of imaging cannot be overemphasized. In this article we will review the imaging features of many conditions affecting the duod

An annular pancreas is a rare anomaly of the pancreas, defined as pancreatic tissue that totally or partly encircles the duodenum, usually the descending portion. A 76-year-old man who was diagnosed with gastric cancer cT3N0M0 Stage IIB underwent laparoscopic distal gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection. Intraoperatively, the dorsal half of the duodenal bulb was seen to be half surrounded by the pancreas, and a non-typical annular pancreas was diagnosed. Because of the risk to the pancreas, it was considered impossible to perform anastomosis by a linear stapler as in the usual laparoscopic

BACKGROUND: In Korea, there have been no reports comparing the prevalence of major congenital anomalies with other countries and no reports on surgical treatment and long-term mortality. We investigated the prevalence of 67 major congenital anomalies in Korea and compared the prevalence with that of the European network of population-based registries for the epidemiological surveillance of congenital anomalies (EUROCAT). We also investigated the mortality and age at death, the proportion of preterm births, and the surgical rate for the 67 major congenital anomalies.
METHODS: Korean National H

Colon cancer is the world's fourth leading cause of death. It is cancer of the latter part of the large intestine, i.e. the colon. Chronic inflammation over a long period also leads to the development of cancer. Cancer in the colon region is arduous to diagnose and is detected at a later stage when it metastasizes to other parts of the body like the liver, lungs, peritoneum, etc. Colon cancer is a great example of solid tumours associated with chronic inflammation. Although conventional therapies are effective, they lose their effectiveness beyond a certain point. Relapse of the disease occurs

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Annular pancreas is a rare congenital condition where the second part of the duodenum is encircled by pancreatic tissue. There is a scarcity of data on its natural history therefore, we aimed to evaluate the epidemiology of annular pancreas and identify underlying associations using a large database.
METHODS: A multi-institutional database (Explorys) was surveyed. A cohort of patients with a Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine-Clinical Terms diagnosis of "MRI, CT, EUS and/or ERCP" between April 2015 and April 2020 was identified. Subsequently a cohort of patients with h

The aim of our manuscript is to report of a successful perinatal outcome after treatment of acute polyhydramnios caused by duodenal atresia. A 34-year-old G3P1 was referred due to polyhydramnios in the 30th week of pregnancy. Ultrasound revealed polyhydramnios, amniotic fluid index (AFI) 28, and a double bubble sign that indicated duodenal atresia and dilatated oesophagus. In the 32nd week of gestation, the volume of amniotic fluid increases, AFI 35, along with symptoms of dyspnea and abdominal pain. Due to the clinical picture and the early gestational age, it was decided to perform an amnior

The present study aims to report a rare case of obstructive choledocholithiases found in an elderly female with heterotaxy syndrome (HS) with polysplenia, and to review the available literature on hepatobiliary pathologies associated with this syndrome. We present the case of an 82-year-old female patient with multiple comorbidities who presented to our hospital with abdominal pain and jaundice. An abdominal ultrasound and subsequent computed tomography showed several obstructive choledocholithiases. Incidentally, an abnormal visceral arrangement consistent with HS with polysplenia was observe

Duodenal stenosis and atresia are some of the most common forms of congenital bowel obstruction. The gold standard approach to treatment is duodenoduodenostomy, while rare, gastrojejunostomy and duodenojejunostomies may still be used. We report a case of a 7-year-old male presenting with annular pancreas with duodenal stenosis that was diagnosed at birth as primary duodenal atresia and repaired by gastrojejunostomy with a Braun enteroenterostomy. Through successful reoperation with dual duodenojejunostomy and subsequent management, we treated the sequelae of the initial repair, including megad

VACTERL Syndrome affects multiple body systems and can include various anomalies of the Vertebral column, Anus and/or rectum, heart (Cardiac), Tracheo-Esophagus, kidneys (Renal), and Limbs. Patients with VACTERL syndrome are at increased risk of having a congenital duodenal obstruction that may be extrinsic in the form of an annular pancreas or intrinsic in the form of duodenal atresia, stenosis or web. Simultaneous presentation of both the annular pancreas and duodenal web is a rare clinical entity and typically presents in neonates. However, late presentation of annular pancreas combined wit

BACKGROUND: Portal annular pancreas (PAP), also called circumportal pancreas, is a congenital pancreatic anomaly in which the portal and/or mesenteric veins are surrounded by pancreatic parenchyma [1,2]. Joseph et al. classified PAP into three types (according to the fusion pattern of the pancreatic parenchyma and ductal system [1]), each of which they subdivided (based on the relation to the portal confluence) into the suprasplenic, infrasplenic, and mixed type [1,3]. The most common type is IIIa [1,4], where the portal vein (suprasplenic) is encased by the uncinate process with an anteportal

BACKGROUND: The annular pancreas is a rare congenital disorder of the pancreas first recognized in 1818. It is believed to result from faulty rotation of the ventral pancreatic bud in its course around the posterior aspect of the duodenal anlage. The duodenum is encircled and might be obstructed by normal pancreatic tissue. The management of the annular pancreas is still developing and under revision.
CASE PRESENTATION: Six cases of neonatal intestinal obstruction secondary to the annular pancreas diagnosed, operated on, and involved in our study. Age, gender, maturity, age at referral, birth

Annular pancreas is a congenital abnormality in which part of the pancreatic head completely or partially surrounds the duodenum in a ring-like manner. The condition is thought to be an abnormality of the ventral pancreatic bud. While pancreatitis is a common complication of the annular pancreas, its recurrence may be prevented by improving the outflow of pancreatic juice. The present case report describes a 23-year-old woman who had been referred to our hospital for recurrent pancreatitis since childhood. An endoscopic incision was made on the orifice of the annular pancreas, after which panc

Although 40 years have passed since the first case of DiGeorge's syndrome was described, and the knowledge about this disorder has steadily increased since that time, 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (DS) remains a challenging diagnosis because its clinical presentation varies widely. We describe an infant with 22q11.2 DS who presented with annular pancreas, anorectal malformation, Morgagni-type congenital diaphragmatic hernia, and ventricular septal defect. This constellation of anomalies has never been described in DiGeorge's syndrome. Here, we provide a case presentation and a thorough review of t

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Congenital anomalies of the pancreas are relatively uncommon. Most of these are asymptomatic and are detected incidentally, but can present with a variety of clinical manifestations like pancreatitis, duodenal obstruction, biliary obstruction, and rarely malignancy. Here in our study, we describe various congenital anomalies of the pancreas associated with various clinical manifestations, its management strategies, and outcomes. The aim was to study the various clinical manifestations of and management strategies for pancreatic diseases associated with congenital anom

Our purpose is to illustrate the radiological aspects of the annular pancreas as an etiology of duodenal obstruction in infants. We report the case of a 4-month-old girl, who was admitted to our department with postprandial vomiting evolving since birth. The initial examination found a severely dehydrated patient. Abdominal ultrasound showed gross dilatation of the stomach and duodenum, it also showed pancreatic tissue surrounding the duodenum, suggesting a diagnosis of annular pancreas as the cause of the duodenal obstruction. Post-contrast abdominal CT showed the gastric and duodenal dilatat

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by motile ciliary dysfunction and impaired ultrastructure. Despite numerous studies, the genetic basis for about 30% of PCD cases remains to be elucidated. Here, we present the identification and functional analysis of two novel mutations in the gene encoding coiled-coil domain-containing protein 40 (CCDC40), which are found in a familial case of PCD. These novel CCDC40 mutations, NM_017950.4: c.2236-2delA and c.2042_2046delTCACA, NP_060420.2: p.(Ile681fs), were identified by whole-exome sequencing (WES). Sanger sequenci

A 65-year-old woman presented with epigastric pain persisting for more than 3 months. She was diagnosed with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP), based on high serum IgG4 levels (981 mg/dL) and diffuse pancreatic enlargement with a capsule-like rim on computed tomography (CT). Additionally, the main pancreatic duct was indistinct on magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography. CT, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, and upper gastrointestinal radiography revealed stenosis with gastric outlet obstruction (GOO) in the second part of the duodenum. Prednisolone administration was initiated as treatment; on day
