Dolichocolon is common in pediatric gastroenterology patients with constipation and associated complaints.

OBJECTIVES: Dolichocolon (DC), classified under International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) code Q43.8 ("Other specified congenital malformations of intestine"), refers to an elongated or redundant large intestine. Recent studies in adults indicate a role for dolichocolon in constipation and disorders of gut-brain interaction. Contrast enema (CE) imaging is commonly used to identify DC, typically defined as a sigmoid colon extending above, or a transverse colon descending below, the iliac crest line. Despite its potential relevance, the prevalence and clinical significanc

PNF- based Gait Rehabilitation-training after a Total Hip Arthroplasty in congenital pelvic malformation; A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital dysplasia of the pelvis often occurs in isolation, however, it can also involve other pelvic components, and anomalies of the digestive system. Pelvic malformations have effects on the pelvic girdle and pelvic stability influencing the quality of gait. The condition can be treated with a total hip arthroplasty (THA). The concept of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) has been described as a comprehensive rehabilitation approach with a focus on motor learning. This case report seeks to illustrate the clinical reasoning and feasibility of applying the PNF-con

The Use of an Inanimate Simulation Model for the Correction of an Anorectal Malformation in the Training of Colorectal Pediatric Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: An anorectal malformation (ARM) is a congenital malformation that requires surgical correction. To acquire the skills needed to perform this complex procedure, an affordable simulation model has previously been developed and validated. The aim of this study is to evaluate the suitability of this ARM model (with perineal fistula) for training in hands-on workshops. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ARM model consists of a wooden casing with disposable perineal body. Participants in several international pediatric colorectal hands-on workshops in 2019 and 2020 were asked to participate.

Differing Progression to Posterior Glottic Stenosis in Autoimmune and Idiopathic Subglottic Stenosis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We sought to characterize rates of progression to posterior glottic stenosis (PGS) from autoimmune or idiopathic subglottic stenosis. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective review. METHODS: Patients from a tertiary-care laryngology practice over a 10-year period with autoimmune or idiopathic subglottic stenosis (SGS) were included. Patients with a history of prolonged intubation or other causes of iatrogenic stenosis were excluded. PGS was confirmed on videostrobolaryngoscopy recordings by a fellowship-trained laryngologist. PGS type (1-4) was also recorded. Demographi

Too Many Biopsies Performed to Rule Out Hirschsprung's Disease: But It is Worth Doing Them.

INTRODUCTION: The U.K. National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) specify the following indications for performing rectal biopsy to rule out Hirschsprung's disease (HSD): (1) passage of meconium > 48 hours; (2) constipation since first few weeks of life; (3) chronic abdominal distension with vomiting; (4) family history of HSD; and (5) faltering growth in addition to any other indication. The aim of this study was to assess the compliance of a tertiary referral center with the current U.K. NICE guidelines for performing rectal biopsies to rule out HSD. Secondary aims included

[Genetic diagnosis of Caroli syndrome with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease: a case report and literature review].

This case report is about one genetically specified diagnosed infant case of Caroli syndrome with autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) in China. The patient in this case report was an eight-month infant boy with an atypical onset and the main clinical manifestation was non-symptomatic enlargement of the liver and kidneys. The imaging study demonstrated a diffused cystic dilatation of intrahepatic bile ducts as well as polycystic changes in bilateral kidneys. The basic blood biochemical tests indicated a normal hepatorenal function. Four serum biomarkers of hepatic fibrosis wer

Life Expectancy of People with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the life expectancy and specify the causes of death among people with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). METHODS: Included were all patients recorded in Alberta provincial databases of inpatients, outpatients, or practitioner claims from 2003 to 2012. People with FAS were identified by ICD-9 code 760.71 and ICD-10 codes Q86.0 and P04.3, and were linked to the Vital Statistics Death Registry to get information about mortality. Life expectancy was estimated by using the life table template developed in the United Kingdom, which is recommended for estimating life expectancy in

Infection of the right iliac fossa.

Febrile pain in the right iliac fossa is one of the most common reasons for consulting at an emergency service. Within this framework, the main diagnosis that is considered is appendicitis, the main complication of which is perforation. However, a certain number of other conditions can be responsible for this clinical picture, primarily including digestive tract and mesentery disorders including mesenteric lymphadenitis, Crohn's disease, infectious enterocolitis, small intestine or colonic diverticulitis, ischaemic colitis or cancer of the caecum. This article illustrates the imaging semiology

Hermaphrodite cell-fate specification.

There are two sexes in C. elegans, hermaphrodite and male. While there are many sex-specific differences between males and hermaphrodites that affect most tissues, the basic body plan and many of its structures are identical. However, most structures required for mating or reproduction are sexually dimorphic and are generated by sex-specific cell lineages. Thus to understand cell fate specification in hermaphrodites, one must consider how the body plan, which is specified during embryogenesis, influences the fates individual cells. One possible mechanism may involve the asymmetric distribution

Videocapsule endoscopy is useful for the diagnosis of intestinal lymphangiectasia.

We study two authentic cases of protein-losing enteropathy, the diagnosis of which was facilitated using Given M2A videocapsule endoscopy. The first case corresponded to a primary intestinal lymphangiectasia confirmed by jejunum biopsies and the second one to a protein-losing enteropathy with lymphatic abnormalities secondary to a chronic constrictive pericarditis. In the first case, the mucosa of jejunum presented with a diffuse oedematous aspect, whitish villi, white curved lines probably related to submucosal dilated lymphatics and lacteal juice. In the second case, capsule endoscopy showed

Treatment of colon conduit redundancy in a child with esophageal atresia.

We recently revised a redundant colon conduit in a boy who was born with isolated esophageal atresia. In view of the paucity of reports dealing with correction of this common complication of esophageal replacement, it seemed appropriate to report our experience. Because of effective medical therapy of acid peptic disease, patients who formerly required conduit replacement may now be candidates for revision; however, the medical literature does not specify when conduit revision, as opposed to conduit replacement, is indicated; also, no guidance is provided regarding what constitutes effective o

Jaw and branchial arch mutants in zebrafish I: branchial arches.

Jaws and branchial arches together are a basic, segmented feature of the vertebrate head. Seven arches develop in the zebrafish embryo (Danio rerio), derived largely from neural crest cells that form the cartilaginous skeleton. In this and the following paper we describe the phenotypes of 109 arch mutants, focusing here on three classes that affect the posterior pharyngeal arches, including the hyoid and five gill-bearing arches. In lockjaw, the hyoid arch is strongly reduced and subsets of branchial arches do not develop. Mutants of a large second class, designated the flathead group, lack se

Malrotation in patients with duodenal atresia: a true association or an expected finding on postoperative upper gastrointestinal barium study?

We retrospectively reviewed the imaging and surgical findings in 17 patients with duodenal atresia to determine (a) the frequency of coexistent malrotation in patients with duodenal atresia and (b) the reliability of the upper gastrointestinal barium study (UGI) in differentiating malrotation from postoperative deformity of the duodenal sweep after repair of duodenal atresia. Postoperatively, 9 (53%) of the 17 patients had UGI findings consistent with malrotation. Of these nine, only two had malrotation coexistent with duodenal atresia, while the other seven had normal midgut rotation demonstr

Mg(2+)-deprivation enhances and Mg(2+)-supplementation diminishes the embryotoxic and teratogenic effects of Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ for frog embryos in the FETAX assay.

The influence of Mg2+ on the embryotoxicity and teratogenicity of Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ for Xenopus embryos was studied by an adaptation of the FETAX protocol. In seven assays, 25 groups of embryos were grown from 5 to 101 hours post-fertilization in FETAX media that contained five graded MgCl2 concentrations (0, 6.2, 62, 620, or 6,200 mumol per L), with or without added NiCl2 (56 mumol per L), CoCl2 (1,800 mumol per L), ZnCl2 (300 mumol per L), or CdCl2 (18 mumol per L). In FETAX assays performed with the standard Mg2+ concentration (620 mumol per L), the incidence of malformations in co

Induction of gut in Caenorhabditis elegans embryos.

Two types of developmental events can cause an embryonic cell to adopt a fate different from that of its neighbours: during a cell division particular contents may be segregated to only one daughter cell and cells may experience different external cues, commonly in the form of inductive cell interactions. Work on development in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans suggests that most cell fates are specified without a need for cell interactions. In particular, the gut cell lineage of C. elegans has been used as a primary example of specification by differential segregation of determinants. Here

Localized bowel distension in the newborn: a review of the plain film analysis and differential diagnosis.

Neonatal abdominal plain films were prospectively analyzed over a 41-month period in order to generate a differential diagnosis for focal bowel distension during the first 6 weeks of life. A total of 31 examples of locally distended bowel were collected. The study discredits the concept that asymmetrically distended bowel in the newborn is usually caused by necrotizing enterocolitis (only 9/31 cases) and indicates that distended bowel in the lower abdomen or left upper quadrant is often caused by air trapping in normal but redundant rectosigmoid (11 cases) or in distal transverse colon (three
