Congenital anomalies of the digestive system, particularly in the esophagus and stomach, present significant challenges to neonatal health due to their complex management and associated risks of morbidity and mortality. This narrative review explores esophageal and gastric anomalies, addressing the embryology, prevalence, diagnostic methods, and treatment approaches, with an emphasis on early detection and improved outcomes. Because of recent advances in prenatal imaging, such as ultrasonography and magnetic resonance, diagnostic accuracy has increased, allowing better clinical planning and ma

Pediatric interventional radiologists are critical members of the multidisciplinary team that manages pediatric hepatobiliary conditions. While many procedures performed in pediatric patients overlap with those performed in adults, the techniques are often modified for children to accommodate the unique challenges of smaller patients and to account for pediatric-specific disease processes. Examples of pediatric hepatobiliary interventions include those performed for biliary atresia evaluation, neonatal choledocholithiasis, protein-losing enteropathy in patients with congenital heart disease, c

PURPOSE: This study compared the efficacy and complications of biodegradable stents (BDS) versus self-expandable fully covered metal stents (SEMS) in pediatric patients with strictures after esophageal atresia repair.
METHODS: The charts of children with esophageal atresia (EA) undergoing stent treatment for anastomotic stricture were retrospectively reviewed. Primary outcomes included time to reintervention (TTR) and procedural success, defined as no necessity of further intervention with a patent esophageal lumen at the time of follow-up. Secondary outcomes included stent-related complicati

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate whether pledget presence, pledget composition, and full versus partial thickness suture technique affect the force esophageal tissue can withstand before tearing.
METHODS: A right thoracotomy was performed on 10 deceased fetal sheep, 110-114 days gestation. The esophagus was divided at the level of the carina and 2 cm of tissue was removed to mimic long-gap esophageal atresia. The pouches were sutured with horizontal mattress non-absorbable braided polyester suture using one of three methods: polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) pledgets, bovine pericardial pledgets

BACKGROUND: Esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF) complicated by foregut duplication (FD) cyst is an exceedingly rare congenital anomaly. Since the first description in 1956, only 20 cases have been reported, with open thoracotomy representing the standard surgical approach. We present a case of successful one-stage thoracoscopic repair of this complex association in a neonate.
CASE PRESENTATION: A male neonate weighing 2080 g was diagnosed with Gross type C EA-TEF. At 3 days of age, right thoracoscopic exploration identified a 1-cm FD cyst on the distal esophageal wall.

INTRODUCTION: The number of patients with congenital lung malformations (CLM) is increasing because of prenatal diagnosis. We investigated the changes in the patient backgrounds and the surgical approach for lobectomy, evaluating the surgical outcomes of thoracoscopic surgery.
METHODS: We enrolled 50 CLM patients who underwent lobectomy between 1995 and 2024. Patients were divided into three 10-year groups to evaluate the trends in patient backgrounds. We also divided them into the thoracotomy and thoracoscopy groups to compare the patient backgrounds and surgical outcomes.
RESULTS: An incre

Background: Asymptomatic compression of celiac artery (CA) by median arcuate ligament (MAL) is quite common, but simultaneous compression of other arteries by MAL is very rare. Case details: A 20-year-old man presented with post-prandial epigastric pain for the past 1 year and a 5 kg weight loss. On examination, he had a body mass index of 17.2 kg/m2 and was normotensive. Blood tests were unremarkable except for a mildly raised serum creatinine. A CT angiography (CTA) showed MAL-related 60% proximal CA narrowing and 40% proximal right renal artery (RRA) narrowing with a small right kidney. Aft

OBJECTIVE: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS), a prevalent sequela following rectal cancer surgery, poses a substantial burden on patients' quality of life (QOL), daily functioning, and psychological well-being, and its management remains an unmet clinical need due to the absence of specific therapeutic agents. Although traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) shows promise in supporting postoperative gastrointestinal recovery, high-quality evidence for its application in LARS is lacking. This trial is designed to assess the efficacy and safety of the investigational TCM formulation BL-1 in pati

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies are a major cause of infant morbidity, mortality, and long-term disability worldwide. Their occurrence is influenced by maternal, demographic, and healthcare-related factors, and temporal patterns may vary according to anomaly group and surveillance quality. In Brazil, population-based analyses remain limited, especially those examining overall prevalence together with system-specific trends.
METHODS: This population-based retrospective study used data from the Brazilian Live Birth Information System (SINASC). All live births registered in São Paulo between 20

OBJECTIVE: Omphalopagus conjoined twins with shared cloacal exstrophy is a rare and easily missed diagnosis in early pregnancy. We emphasize the importance of early prenatal diagnosis and management to prevent complications.
CASE REPORT: This is a 32-year-old gravida-3, para-0 woman referred at 19th week of gestation age for conjoined twins diagnosed as omphalopagus. Initial evaluations misidentified the condition due to the presence of a large cyst, initially thought to be simple amniotic fluid. Advanced magnetic resonance imaging confirmed shared bowel structures and a significantly dilated

BACKGROUND: Esophageal atresia (EA) is a rare congenital condition often accompanied by lifelong medical challenges. The complex and ongoing needs of children with EA place substantial demands on their parents. The purpose of this study was to explore the psychosocial experiences of parents caring for a child with EA during early childhood. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was employed involving five focus groups with 22 parents of children aged 0–7 years with EA. Manifest content analysis with an inductive approach was used. Data saturation was achieved across and within groups. RESU

Refractory anastomotic restenosis following surgery for congenital esophageal atresia (CEA) or congenital esophageal stenosis (CES) remains a serious complication in pediatric surgery. Repeated endoscopic balloon dilatation (EBD) under general anesthesia often impairs growth, feeding function, and overall quality of life (QOL). We have developed a regenerative therapy using autologous oral mucosal epithelial cell sheets. This study aimed to evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of epithelial cell sheet transplantation for refractory esophageal restenosis in pediatric patients. Between 201
