Sixty undamaged human fetuses with various nonocular external malformations were selected randomly from a large number of fetuses collected by the Department of Anatomy Faculty of Medicine, Kyoto University, and examined macroscopically and stereomicroscopically for ocular and other external and internal malformations. The authors report about 3 cases of the congenital adreno-genital syndrome in first-born children with a high weight at birth (3900, 3600, and 4200 g) who perished in early infancy. One child, who was considered to be a boy, died of septic postoperative complications; during the operation the uterus, ovaries, tubes, phenomena of pseudofemale hemaphroditis were observed. A pair of monozygotic, adolescent twins is discordant for sex. The phenotypic female twin has chromosome constitution of 46, XY/45, X. She displays many signs of Turner's syndrome, including typical facies, webbed neck, malformed left kidney, high plasma gonadotropins, and streak ovaries. However, her height is 154 cm which exceeds the height usually reported in Turner's syndrome. The male twin has a karyotype of 46, XY and normal sexual development. Only two other reports of pairs of monozygotic twins of opposite sex have been published.

Cytogenetic and histological studies were carried out on an intersex horse which was diagnosed clinically as a cryptorchid. Surgery confirmed the horse to be a bilateral abdominal cryptorchid and histological examination revealed ovarian tissue associated with the left epididymis. To gain insight into the sex-determining mechanism of the Siamese fighting fish, Betta splendens, sex-reversed individuals were bred and the ratios of the spawnings were examined. Sex-reversal of 245 females was undertaken by ovariectomizing them; of these, 104 became sex-reversed. Follicular growth is described as a continuum. It goes on at all times, at all ages, uninterrupted by pregnancy or other periods of non-ovulation. A family with hirsutism in five generations in which polycystic or bilaterally enlarged ovaries were documented in three different sibships of two generations is described. Two brothers of one of the women with polycystic ovaries had a low or low-normal plasma follicle-stimulating hormone level and one of these had oligospermia due to maturation arrest of spermiogenesis. On four cases we show the clinical symptomatology of the lower ureteral segment by restricting and aberrant vessels. At the same time we pay attention to the right vena ovarica syndrome as an etiological factor of pyelonephritis of pregnancy and to the other vascular anomalies, which cause unilateral ureteral obstructions. The ultrastructural findings on the gonad from a patient with testicular feminization syndrome (TFS) are reported. One gonad was the site of dysgerminoma. The other was a dysgenetic testis composed of seminiferoud and Sertoli cell tubules and ovarian cortical stroma-like tissue. Ultrastructurally the tubules were lined by immature Sertoli cells and cells indistinguishable from dark ovarian stromal cells. Similar and/or identical cells were found in the ovarian-like stroma and in the interstitial tissue between the tubules. There were mature and immature Leydig cells in the intertubular areas.

In 14 cases of the Turner syndrome and pure gonadal dysgenesis streak gonads were studied histologically. In cases where the 46,XX line was unimpaired the blood vessels of the gonad showed severe degeneration in at least 30 to 50%. These streak gonads usually contained some of the characteristic ovarian elements as well as the vascular lesions. In gonosomal monosomy, on the other hand, a similar intensive vascular degeneration could not be found and the gonad consisted of indeterminate connective tissue.
