Cytologic features of ciliated adenocarcinoma of the cervix: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ciliation is a normal finding in the endometrium, fallopian tubes and cervix. Because cilia are characteristically lost when malignant tumors arise at these sites, the detection of cilia on light microscopy is frequently used to support a benign diagnosis. Ciliated carcinomas of müllerian duct origin, however, do occur, albeit rarely, and can pose a potential diagnostic difficulty in cytologic specimens. CASE: A woman with a histologically confirmed ciliated adenocarcinoma of the cervix had prior liquid-based cervical cytology showing atypical, ciliated glandular cells that initia

Meconium peritonitis secondary to torsion of fallopian tube cyst and transient central diabetes insipidus in a preterm infant.

Meconium peritonitis is a sterile chemical peritonitis caused by peritoneal seeding of meconium from an antenatal gastrointestinal perforation. We report a 32-week preterm female neonate who developed meconium peritonitis due to bowel perforation, secondary to a twisted left fallopian tube mass, which was excised and confirmed by histopathology. This association has not been reported earlier. The infant also developed transient central diabetes insipidus, a very rare condition in a preterm neonate.

Morgagni cyst within tubal lipoma.

Both benign and malignant tumors of the fallopian tube are uncommon. Benign tumors are most often of mesodermal origin and usually are small enough to be incidental findings at laparotomy. We describe a fallopian tube lipoma that inserted a Morgagni hydatid cyst in a 48 year old woman.

Homologous feeder cells support undifferentiated growth and pluripotency in monkey embryonic stem cells.

In the present study, five homologous feeder cell lines were developed for the culture and maintenance of rhesus monkey embryonic stem cells (rESCs). Monkey ear skin fibroblasts (MESFs), monkey oviductal fibroblasts (MOFs), monkey follicular granulosa fibroblast-like (MFG) cells, monkey follicular granulosa epithelium-like (MFGE) cells, and clonally derived fibroblasts from MESF (CMESFs) were established and compared with the ability of mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) to support rESC growth. MESF, MOF, MFG, and CMESF cells, but not MFGE cells, were as good as or better than MEFs in supporti

Adenocarcinoma of persistent müllerian duct remnants: case report and differential diagnosis.

Persistent müllerian duct syndrome is an unusual disorder characterized by cryptorchidism and retention of müllerian derivatives (uterus, fallopian tubes, and upper vagina). We report the case of a 39-year-old man with this syndrome in association with adenocarcinoma from the retained müllerian remnants of probable endocervical origin. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an endocervical adenocarcinoma associated with persistent müllerian duct syndrome.

Intra-abdominal ovarian-type mucinous cystadenoma associated with fallopian tube-like structure and aberrant epididymal tissue in a male patient.

Ovarian-type mucinous tumors may occasionally occur in the retroperitoneum, pancreas, and liver exclusively or almost exclusively in women. In men, only few cases of such neoplasms arising within or around the testis have been reported. We describe a unique case of an ovarian-type mucinous cystadenoma occurring in the peritoneal cavity of a 65-year-old male patient with secondary adrenocortical insufficiency and hypogonadism. There was a typical fallopian tube enclosed in the capsule of the tumor. Contiguous to that, accessory ectopic epididymal tissue was found. We have interpreted this case

Uterine adenosarcoma in a boy with persistent müllerian duct syndrome: first reported case.

Persistent müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare form of male pseudohermaphroditism. Bilateral fallopian tubes and a uterus occur with an otherwise normal male phenotype. Testicular neoplasm in PMDS has been reported, but malignant degeneration of the remnant female genitalia has only once been reported. We present imaging, surgical specimen, and surgical pathology of the first documented case of uterine adenosarcoma of a müllerian remnant in a 14-year-old boy with PMDS presenting with gross hematuria and increasing abdominal protuberance. The child died of metastatic disease after surgical

Malignant müllerian mixed tumor (carcinosarcoma) of the fallopian tube: an immunohistochemical study of neoplastic cells.

The patient was a 65-year-old woman who complained of lower abdominal pain. Salpingo-oophorectomy and hysterectomy were performed due to suspicion of ovarian cancer. At surgery a polypoid mass was observed in the fimbria of the left fallopian tube. Histologically, proliferation of undifferentiated neoplastic cells with marked cytological atypia predominated in the tumor. Proliferation of rhabdomyoblastic cells or spindle cells, as well as adenocarcinoma arising from the mucosa of the fallopian tube, was observed. A diagnosis of malignant müllerian mixed tumor (MMMT) was made. CD10 was expresse

Female adnexal tumor of probable Wolffian origin diagnosed during the staging evaluation of extranodal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Female adnexal tumor of probable Wolffian origin (FATPWO) is a rare neoplasm arising within the leaves of broad ligament or hanging from it or a fallopian tube. A 55-year-old female patient with the diagnosis of non-Hodgkin lymphoma is presented. The staging procedure revealed a pelvic mass that was not regressed by chemotherapy. Explorative laparotomy showed FATPWO. The extremely rare coexistence of FATPWO in the staging evaluation of non-Hodgkin lymphoma is reported. According to our knowledge, this is the first case of FATPWO coexisting with extranodal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in the E

Uterine-like mass with features of an extrauterine adenomyoma presenting 22 years after total abdominal hysterectomy-bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy: a case report and review of the literature.

Adenomyoma is a benign tumor composed of smooth muscle and benign endometrium. These tumors typically originate within the uterus. An extrauterine adenomyoma is a rare entity. We report a uterine-like mass consistent with an extrauterine adenomyoma presenting 22 years following a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The mass was pear-shaped with uterine-type smooth muscle and a cavity lined by functional endometrial glands and stroma. To our knowledge, only 4 other cases of an extrauterine uterine-like mass are reported in the literature. Three involved the ovary,

Mixed germ cell tumor after bilateral orchidopexy in persistent Müllerian duct syndrome with transverse testicular ectopia.

The persistent müllerian duct syndrome is characterized by the retention of müllerian derivatives (fallopian tubes, uterus) in patients otherwise normally virilized, usually with cryptorchidism or an inguinal hernia. Very rarely, this syndrome is associated with transverse testicular ectopia, which designates the condition when both testes descend through the same inguinal canal into the same scrotal sac. We report on a patient with both conditions, who had T1N2M0 scrotal mixed germ cell tumor of the testis (teratoma and embryonal carcinoma), 18 years after bilateral orchidopexy. The literatur

Endometrioid carcinoma of the fallopian tube resembling a female adnexal tumor of probable wolffian origin.

Endometrioid carcinoma of the fallopian tube resembling a female adnexal tumor of probable wolffian origin (FATWO) is a rare, recently delineated, low-grade carcinoma that may be confused with both FATWO and high-grade carcinoma. Only about 20 cases have been reported so far, but it probably represents almost half of the endometrioid carcinomas of the fallopian tube. It has a better prognosis than conventional tubal endometrioid and serous carcinomas. Macroscopically, the tumors form a small, solid, polypoid mass that is usually confined within the tube. Microscopically, the tumors are charact

Intraperitoneal serous adenocarcinoma: a critical appraisal of three hypotheses on its cause.

OBJECTIVE: Serous ovarian, Fallopian tube, and peritoneal adenocarcinomas are remarkably similar, both in their morphology, as well as in their clinical behavior. Despite extensive clinical and fundamental research, controversy still exists on the origin of serous female adnexal tumors. Difficulties in identification of site of origin at late stage the of disease at detection, when ovary, Fallopian tube, and the abdominal cavity are usually all involved, in addition to their macroscopic and microscopic resemblance, are major causes of this debate. In 3 hypotheses, 3 possible tissues of origin

Expression of growth hormone secretagogue receptor type 1a, the functional ghrelin receptor, in human ovarian surface epithelium, mullerian duct derivatives, and ovarian tumors.

Ghrelin, the endogenous ligand of the GH secretagogue receptor (GHS-R), is a newly identified, ubiquitously expressed molecule that has been involved in a wide array of endocrine and nonendocrine functions, including cell proliferation. In this context, our group recently reported the expression of ghrelin and its functional receptor, the GHS-R type 1a, in the human ovary and testis as well as several testicular tumors. Ovarian malignancies, however, remain unexplored. Notably, a vast majority of ovarian tumors derive from the surface epithelium, which originates from the celomic epithelium. C

Human feeder layers for human embryonic stem cells.

Human embryonic stem (hES) cells hold great promise for future use in various research areas, such as human developmental biology and cell-based therapies. Traditionally, these cells have been cultured on mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) feeder layers, which permit continuous growth in an undifferentiated stage. To use these unique cells in human therapy, an animal-free culture system must be used, which will prevent exposure to mouse retroviruses. Animal-free culture systems for hES cells enjoy three major advantages in the basic culture conditions: 1). the ability to grow these cells under s

Mullerianosis of the mesosalpinx: a case report.

We report a case of mullerianosis of the mesosalpinx, the appearance of which simulated metastatic adenocarcinoma. The patient was a 37-year-old woman with a mixed epithelial cystadenoma of borderline malignancy associated with endometriosis in both ovaries. The left mesosalpinx contained a firm, 2.2-cm, gray-white mass that on microscopic examination consisted of glands lined mostly by endocervical-type epithelium with admixed tubal-type glands and foci of endometriosis. Rupture of glands with extravasation of mucin into the surrounding stroma was observed, but there was no desmoplastic strom

Immunohistochemical profile of serous papillary cystadenofibroma of the fallopian tube: a clue of paramesonephritic origin.

Cystadenofibromas of the fallopian tube are rare tumors of the female genital tract. These tumors are usually asymptomatic and are found incidentally. The authors present an incidentally found fallopian serous cystadenofibroma in a 48-year-old woman with leiomyoma uteri. The topographic localization of the lesion, histopathologic findings of müllerian-type epithelium, immunophenotypic profile of vimentin-cytokeratin coexpression, and diffuse apical epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) immunoreactivity suggested that the tumor was an embryologic remnant originating from the müllerian duct.

A culture system using human foreskin fibroblasts as feeder cells allows production of human embryonic stem cells.

BACKGROUND: Human embryonic stem (hES) cell lines were first cultured using fetal mouse fibroblasts as feeder cells. To avoid feeders and to reduce the amount of xeno-components, Matrigel- and laminin-coated dishes, and conditioned mouse feeder cell medium have been used, and hES cells have also been cultured on human fetal muscle and skin, and adult Fallopian tube epithelial cells. METHODS: We used post-natal, commercially available human foreskin fibroblasts as feeder cells. Inner cell masses (ICM) were isolated from five supernumerary blastocysts, obtained as donations from couples undergo

Extrauterine lesions of intermediate trophoblast.

Lesions of intermediate trophoblast arising in the uterus include exaggerated placental site, placental site nodule, placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT), and epithelioid trophoblastic tumor. Only 12 examples of extrauterine lesions of intermediate trophoblast (ELIT) have been previously reported; 7 new cases are described herein. Six lesions were located in the fallopian tube or paratubal region and one in the ovary. The patients were 25 to 47 (average 36) years of age. The lesions ranged from 0.6 to 4 cm in diameter; four were cystic. The four placental site nodules (three tubal, one pa

FANCD2 protein is expressed in proliferating cells of human tissues that are cancer-prone in Fanconi anaemia.

Fanconi anaemia (FA) is an inherited form of progressive pancytopenia associated with developmental defects, chromosomal instability, and cancer predisposition. At least seven distinct FA proteins function in concert to protect the genome, a key step being the activation of FANCD2 by mono-ubiquitination. This paper reports an immunohistochemical analysis of FANCD2 expression in normal human tissue. The highest expression was observed in maturing spermatocytes and fetal oocytes (consistent with a role for FANCD2 in meiosis) and in germinal centre cells of the spleen, tonsil, and lymph nodes (co
