[Ectopias of the kidney, urinary tract organs, and male genitalia. German version.].

The most frequent anomaly of the urogenital tract is a simple renal ectopia with one organ lying in the pelvis. Crossed renal ectopia is a less common condition in which the ectopic kidney is located on the opposite side of the midline from the ureteral insertion in the urinary bladder. The cause of both types of renal ectopia is the arrest or failure of the kidney ascent from the pelvic to the lumbar position. Whereas an accelerated ascent leads to a subdiaphragmal or intrathoracic ectopic position, an ectopic ureter can be defined as one that does not drain into the trigonum vesicae. The ect

A rare case of hydrometrocolpos from persistent urogenital sinus in patient affected by adrenogenital syndrome.

Persistent urogenital sinus (PUGS) is a congenital pathological condition characterized by an abnormal communication between the urethra and vagina, which has an estimated incidence of 0.6/10,000 female births. It could be the only known malformation or part of a syndrome. PUGS is commonly shown by a pelvic mass, related to a distended bladder, hydrometrocolpos which is due to an obstruction leading to the dilation of the vagina and uterus (i.e., imperforate hymen, transverse vaginal septum or atresia, and PUGS) or both. We present a case of female patient with classical congenital adrenal hyp

The comprehensiveness of the ESHRE/ESGE classification of female genital tract congenital anomalies: a systematic review of cases not classified by the AFS system.

STUDY QUESTION: How comprehensive is the recently published European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE)/European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE) classification system of female genital anomalies? SUMMARY ANSWER: The ESHRE/ESGE classification provides a comprehensive description and categorization of almost all of the currently known anomalies that could not be classified properly with the American Fertility Society (AFS) system. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Until now, the more accepted classification system, namely that of the AFS, is associated with serious limitatio

[Pharmacology of misoprostol (pharmacokinetic data, adverse effects and teratogenic effects)].

Misoprostol is a synthetic analogue of prostaglandin E1. It is used in gynaecology because of its properties of myometrium smooth muscle cells contraction and its effects on the cervix. Misoprostol oral bioavailability is low and several authors have assessed whether the administration by other routes increased its pharmacodynamic effects. This paper summarizes the pharmacokinetic studies after other routes of administration: vaginal, sublingual, buccal or rectal. It also provides an update on its adverse effects and teratogenic effects.

Unusual case of OHVIRA syndrome with a single uterus, unrecognized before labor and followed by an intrapartal rupture of obstructed hemivagina.

PURPOSE: The acronym for obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly (OHVIRA) was created to describe patients with an obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly and enables inclusion of other uterine anomalies except uterus didelphys. The main goal of this article is to present a rare case of OHVIRA syndrome with intrapartal rupture of obstructed hemivagina. METHODS: We present an unusual case of OHVIRA syndrome with single uterus, uterine septum (previously resected by hysteroscopy) and renal agenesis, unrecognized before labor and followed by an intrapartal rupture of obst

Double cervix: clarifying a diagnostic dilemma.

OBJECTIVE: Although double cervix is often considered to indicate uterus didelphys, it may be challenging to determine the true associated anomaly as double cervix occurs with other müllerian anomalies. Our purpose is to report the frequency of uterine müllerian anomalies that occur with a double cervix and identify imaging or clinical criteria to help classify the associated anomaly. STUDY DESIGN: After institutional review board approval, an electronic search was performed to identify patients with double cervix and pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between 1976-2010 (using Internatio

HOXA10 and HOXA13 sequence variations in human female genital malformations including congenital absence of the uterus and vagina.

Congenital genital malformations occurring in the female population are estimated to be 5 per 1000 and associate with infertility, abortion, stillbirth, preterm delivery and other organ abnormalities. Complete aplasia of the uterus, cervix and upper vagina (Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome) has an incidence of 1 per 4000 female live births. The molecular etiology of congenital genital malformations including MRKH is unknown up to date. The homeobox (HOX) genes HOXA10 and HOXA13 are involved in the development of human genitalia. In this investigation, HOXA10 and HOXA13 genes of 2

Cervical dysgenesis with transverse vaginal septum with imperforate hymen in an 11 year old girl presenting with acute abdomen.

This case highlights the importance of careful evaluation of girls presenting with imperforate hymen as this is accompanied by other female reproductive tract anomalies. It is of utmost importance that a correct timely diagnosis is made so that the right treatment can be chosen with the perspective of future fertility. Cervical dysgenesis associated with vaginal septum and imperforate hymen has not been reported in literature so far. Present case highlights the simple mode of management with a successful outcome.

Uterine duplicity without communication between both hemiuteri and cervicovaginal atresia: importance of a thorough diagnosis before treatment.

The study described diagnostic and therapeutic processes for an exceptional congenital female genital anomaly involving a 15-year-old girl with progressive dysmenorrhoea and intense abdominal pain, and analyses pathogenesis of embryological anomalies associated with uterine duplicity (UD). Diagnostic methodology is analysed; treatment is described; and recommendations are provided. For the study of anomalies such as UD, we recommend the use of an ultrasound, vaginoscopy, MRI and laparoscopy imaging. Keeping in mind that hemihysterectomy should only be performed in cases with endometriosis or o
