Müllerian anomalies and endometriosis as potential explanatory models for the retrograde menstruation/implantation and the embryonic remnants/celomic metaplasia pathogenic theories: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

STUDY QUESTION: Does endometriosis prevalence differ in patients with obstructive Müllerian anomalies (OMA) versus those with nonobstructive Müllerian anomalies (NOMA), and in patients with NOMA versus those without Müllerian anomalies? SUMMARY ANSWER: The quantitative synthesis of published data demonstrates a substantially increased prevalence of endometriosis in patients with OMA compared with those with NOMA, and a similar prevalence in patients with NOMA and those without Müllerian anomalies. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The pathogenesis of endometriosis has not been definitively clarified ye

A new look at the theoretical causes of endometriosis: Narrative review.

Endometriosis is a major health concern in women who have it. Unfortunately, there is no definitive cure except panhysterectomy with its sequelae including induction of premature menopause due to loss of ovaries. Therefore, revealing the causes of this puzzling disease is necessary to avoid contracting it, and to spare women the health disorders resulting from it and the difficulties of treating it. We aimed to study endometriosis with a focus on its theoretical causes. Its classification reports and theories of pathogenesis were identified and studied from available database searches. The cau

Imperforate hymen causing hematocolpos, hematometra and acute urinary retention in an adolescent girl.

Abdominal pain is a common occurrence in the adolescent demographic, encompassing a wide range of differential diagnoses. The etiology of abdominal pain can be categorized into gastrointestinal, urologic, and gynecologic causes. In the female pediatric population, acute urinary retention is an uncommon but noteworthy source of abdominal pain, typically resulting from an obstructive process. Hence, it is imperative to perform a comprehensive physical examination prior to deciding on the management approach. We present the case of a 11-year-old girl who visited the emergency department due to su

Neonatal Hydrocolpos in Bardet-Biedl Syndrome due to a Novel Frameshift Indel in the BBS10 Gene.

INTRODUCTION: Hydrocolpos, a rare condition characterized by cystic dilatation of the vagina, can arise from various etiologies, including isolated imperforate hymen and vaginal atresia. Genetic conditions, such as Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), may also manifest with hydrocolpos as part of urogenital malformations. METHODS: We present a case of neonatal hydrocolpos associated with BBS. Sequencing of 19 BBS genes was performed to elucidate the genetic basis of the syndrome. RESULTS: Genetic analysis revealed a novel frameshift indel variant (c.1543_1546dup p.Thr516Argfs*7) in the BBS10 gene. T

Congenital Abnormalities Causing Hematocolpos: A Pictorial Essay.

Hematocolpos, characterized by the accumulation of menstrual blood in the vagina, is a rare condition often misdiagnosed due to its uncommon occurrence and non-specific symptoms. Main causes include imperforate hymen, obstructed hemivagina with ipsilateral renal anomaly (OHVIRA), congenital lower vaginal atresia, and complete transverse vaginal septum. Without early diagnosis and treatment, complications such as tubal adhesion, pelvic endometriosis, and infertility can occur. This article reviews the differential diagnosis and treatment of hematocolpos.

Prenatal diagnosis of isolated fetal hydrometrocolpos: A case report.

A rare congenital condition known as hydrometrocolpos (HMC) is characterized by the buildup of secretions in the vagina and uterus as a result of distal obstruction; this condition is frequently linked to imperforate hymen. This case report presents a prenatal diagnosis of isolated HMC in a 30-year-old primigravida, detected at 36 weeks gestation. Initial ultrasound revealed a large cystic mass, confirmed by fetal magnetic resonance imaging to be HMC. Postnatal examination of the new born confirmed imperforate hymen and HMC, which was effectively treated with hymenotomy, resulting in early res

A Rare Case Report of a Congenital Imperforate Hymen Causing Obstructive Uropathy and Constipation in an 11-Year-Old Girl.

Imperforate hymen is a rare congenital anomaly that can cause mild to severe complications, which leads to an increase in morbidity rates. The incidence is 1:1000, and there was often a delay in diagnosis since the symptoms were not specific until it caused several complications in other organ systems. We reported a case of obstructive uropathy and constipation in an 11-year-old girl who presented with huge hematocolpos due to imperforate hymen. The main symptom was severe lower abdominal pain with a visual analogue scale of 8. This case shows the significance of a physical examination in diag

Familial occurrence of imperforate hymen in premature monozygotic twins and their mother: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Imperforate hymen is an uncommon obstructive anomaly of the developing female reproductive tract. There are occasional case reports of imperforate hymen occurring in family clusters, suggesting a plausible familial mode of inheritance. We describe a set of monozygotic premature twins with imperforate hymen noted at birth, whose mother was diagnosed with the same condition as a teenager. We also elucidate the likely underlying mode of inheritance of imperforate hymen. METHOD: We utilized the CARE (Case Report) guideline in reporting the cases. CASE PRESENTATION: These are monozygo
