Severe Abdominal Pain Mimicking Appendicitis Caused by Imperforate Hymen: Case Report and Narrative Review.

An imperforate hymen is a rare congenital genital anomaly causing menstrual blood retention during puberty. Treatment consists of a simple surgical incision of the hymenal membrane. We present a case of a 14-year-old girl who was admitted to the Emergency Department with severe lower abdominal pain mimicking appendicitis. Medical history revealed a lack of menses and several months of cyclic abdominal pain. Imaging diagnostics confirmed an imperforate hymen with hematometrocolpos. Hymenotomy was performed with full recovery without complications. An imperforate hymen should be considered in th

Hematocolpometra due to Imperforate Hymen.

Early recognition of imperforate hymen in premenarchal girls enables timely intervention to prevent serious complications; however, its nonspecific presentation often leads to missed diagnosis in primary care. Careful genital examination, supplemented by appropriate imaging, is essential when evaluating lower abdominal pain or constipation in girls with amenorrhea.

Congenital imperforate hymen in a newborn presenting with vaginal protrusion and abdominal distension: a rare case report.

Imperforate hymen is a rare neonatal anomaly that can cause hydrocolpos and urinary obstruction. We report a newborn girl who presented on day three with abdominal distension and was found to have severe hydrocolpos from an imperforate hymen, leading to bilateral hydronephrosis but with preserved renal function. A hymenal incision effectively drained the accumulated secretions, resulting in rapid clinical improvement and complete resolution on follow-up imaging. Hydrocolpos occurs due to fluid accumulation behind a vaginal obstruction such as an imperforate hymen, and early recognition is esse

Delayed Diagnosis of Imperforate Hymen Causing Hematocolpos and Hematometra in an Adolescent with Type II Female Genital Mutilation: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Imperforate hymen is the most common congenital obstructive anomaly of the female genital tract and an important cause of primary amenorrhea; however, delayed diagnosis may occur in low-resource and culturally sensitive settings, especially when coexisting genital findings such as type II female genital mutilation (FGM) complicate clinical assessment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old nulliparous adolescent from a rural area, married for two months, presented with primary amenorrhea since puberty, severe cyclic lower abdominal pain, and avoidance of sexual intercourse because of di

A curious case of maternal mirror syndrome secondary to fetal urinary ascites.

BackgroundMaternal mirror syndrome is a rare pregnancy complication causing maternal edema that mirrors that of a hydropic fetus. Isolated fetal ascites is also uncommon and has multiple possible etiologies, and has not traditionally been associated with maternal mirror syndrome.Case reportWe present a case of "atypical maternal mirror syndrome" in a fetus with isolated abdominal ascites to illustrate the possibility of mirror syndrome without fetal hydrops. A 32-year-old G1P0 had an ultrasound revealing significant fetal abdominal ascites with incompletely visualized fetal bladder dome. The p

Local repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) induces whole-brain functional dynamic remodeling.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the features of various mediastinal lymphadenopathies using computed tomography perfusion (CTP). METHODS: CTP parameters (CTPs) of the selected mediastinal nodes from 59 patients with pathology-proven malignant lymph nodes and of those from 29 patients with clinically diagnosed or pathology-proven inflammatory lymphadenopathies were collected. Patients were divided into subgroups by etiology and phase of primary disease, including different pathological malignant nodes and diverse inflammatory nodes. CTPs were defined as blood flow (BF), blood volume (BV), mean transit t

Reproductive outcomes after surgical correction of congenital obstructive genital tract anomalies: A systematic review and quantitative pooled analysis of published data.

BACKGROUND: Congenital obstructive genital tract anomalies are rare but clinically significant causes of menstrual outflow obstruction, endometriosis, and subfertility. Surgical correction aims to restore reproductive potential, yet evidence to guide counselling on fertility and pregnancy outcomes remains fragmented. OBJECTIVE: To synthesise and pool published data on fertility, obstetric, and neonatal outcomes following surgical correction of congenital obstructive anomalies, comparing outcomes across anomaly types to inform individualised counselling. STUDY DESIGN: A systematic review was

Recurrent Abdominal Pain in a Premenarchal Girl: A Missed Diagnosis of Hematocolpos Identified by Point-of-Care Ultrasound.

Hematocolpos is a rare but clinically significant cause of abdominal pain in peripubertal females and may be misdiagnosed as more common conditions such as constipation. We report a case of a girl aged 10 years and 10 months with multiple emergency department visits for recurrent abdominal pain, initially attributed to constipation with unremarkable prior imaging. She presented again with persistent symptoms and no history of menarche despite signs of puberty. Physical examination revealed findings suggestive of hematocolpos. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) demonstrated a distended uterus, wh

[A remarkable swelling in the genital region of a newborn girl].

Prenatal ultrasound showed an abdominal mass in a female foetus. During clinical examination of the neonate after birth, a bulging mass was visible at the introitus. The urethra and anus were patent, confirming the diagnosis of an imperforate hymen. Surgery was performed to release the resulting mucocolpos.

Antenatal diagnosis and successful management of fetal mucocolpometra in a resource-limited setting: a case report from Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Imperforate hymen is the most common congenital anomaly of the female genital tract, usually diagnosed at puberty. Neonatal presentation is rare, and antenatal diagnosis is even less common but increasingly recognized with advances in prenatal ultrasonography. Fetal mucocolpometra results from distal vaginal obstruction and may present as a cystic pelvic mass, with potential for postnatal complications such as urinary obstruction. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 17-year-old primigravida from rural North-western Ethiopia whose fetus was found on late antenatal ultrasound to have a

Clinicopathological Characteristics and Outcomes of Genitourinary Rhabdomyosarcoma in Two Girls.

Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is a soft tissue neoplasm accounting for about 8% of solid tumors in children. There are mainly four histologic subtypes of RMS: embryonal, alveolar, spindle cell/sclerosing, and pleomorphic. The genitourinary tract is the second most affected primary site of RMS. Genitourinary RMS is more common in young boys than girls. Among the subtypes of RMS, embryonal RMS is the primary histologic subtype identified in the bladder and female genitourinary tract of children. We present two cases of genitourinary RMS in two girls, one affecting the bladder/urethra and the other affe

Hydrocolpos in a mixed-breed dog: a case report.

A 3.5-year-old, 5.2-kg mixed-breed dog was presented with persistent stranguria after being neutered due to dystocia 6 months ago. Plain abdominal radiographs revealed an intrapelvic soft-tissue attenuating mass that displaced the urinary bladder cranially and constricted the descending colon. Abdominal ultrasonography yielded inconclusive results. Computed tomography revealed the mass as a tubular, hypodense structure compressing the urethra and the descending colon. This finding was defined as hydrocolpos induced by an imperforate hymen, segmental vaginal aplasia, or a vestibulovaginal disor

Research progress of SPP1 in cancer regulation: Tumorigenesis, metastasis, tumor microenvironment, immunity and therapeutic targets (Review).

OBJECTIVES: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) has been defined as a systemic, chronic, inflammatory arthritis, usually seronegative for rheumatoid factor (RF), associated with cutaneous psoriasis. The exact prevalence of PsA is unknown and its estimation has been difficult, partly due to the lack of a widely accepted classification criteria. Agreed and validated criteria will facilitate comparison between centres and different countries in the areas of epidemiology, outcome studies and therapeutic trials. A number of classification criteria have been published by Moll & Wright (M & W), Bennett's, Vase

Incidental diagnosis of genital tuberculosis in a prepubertal girl presenting with acute urinary retention: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Genital tuberculosis affecting prepubertal girls is extremely uncommon, posing a great diagnostic challenge. It is a form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis usually seen in the reproductive age group. It can lead to significant health problems, including infertility, pelvic pain, menstrual irregularities in women, or amenorrhea. Genital tuberculosis is even rarer when coupled with an imperforate hymen, thus presenting a rare and diagnostically challenging presentation. Imperforate hymen is an uncommon obstructive congenital abnormality of the female reproductive tract with an incidence

Imaging and Diagnostic Challenges in an 11-Year-Old Girl with Vaginal Agenesis: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND The prevalence of female genital tract anomalies is around 4-6.9%. Vaginal agenesis is a form of Müllerian agenesis and defined as the congenital absence of the vagina. It affects 1 in 5000 women. During normal fetal development, the Müllerian ducts combine to form the uterus, fallopian tubes, and most of the vagina. However, in cases of vaginal agenesis, the Müllerian ducts fail to fuse to form the upper part of the vagina. This report presents the case of an 11-year-old girl with vaginal agenesis evaluated using ultrasound. CASE REPORT An 11-year-old girl, Tanner stage II, present
