The author reports a rare case of sigmoid kidney accompanied by the absence of uterine tubes, uterus and vagina, and stresses the importance of thorough investigation of both the urinary and genital systems in the presence of a malformation affecting one or the other.

The relevant literature has been reviewed and it appears that there is no doubt that in utero exposure to stilboestrol is related to the eventual development of vaginal adenocarcinoma in young females. Although cancer of other types are also prevalent, the incidence is not great and may be related to other types of drugs taken during pregnancy. The review attempts to correlate the genetic effects with the abnormal development, but on account of the scarcity of data such correlation is not possible. An unusual uterine malformation in which double cervix was the sole müllerian tube fusion defect is presented. It was associated with numerous other congenital anomalies in a 4-month-old infant with normal chromosome studies. The embryologic significance of this defective fusion is discussed.

A child with female hypospadia complicated by bilateral hydronephrosis, hydroureter, and hydrocolpos was heterozygous for a pericentric inversion of chromosome 18, 46,XX,inv(18)(p11q21). The normal mother and her father had the same inversion. The abnormal phenotype of the girl could be due to undetectable recombination or to a position effect. Monozygotic female twins were concordant for tracheo-esophageal fistula (TEF); and one twin also manifested other anomalies in the VATER association, including agenesis of the female reproductive tract. Review of the literature discloses a familial tendency for recurrence of TEF and a high concordance rate in monozygotic twins, indicating a significant genetic influence for the isolated anomaly. In the case of the VATER association, the sporadic occurrence of affected individuals and discordance in twins implicates the effect of non-genetic factors.

A patient is presented who was short in stature and had an enlarged phallus, normal vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and bilateral testes but with a 45,X karyotype from peripheral leukocytes. This is believed to be the first such patient ever reported. Such patients and other previously described male hermaphrodites with a 45,X karyotype indicate that, contrary to the general rule that patients with 45,X karyotype do not require a laparotomy, patients with such a karyotype should be explored if their genitalia are ambiguous.

Dorso-ventral vaginal septa were observed in 38% of the recently weaned BALB/cJ female mice in the production colony at The Jackson Laboratory. The frequency of septa in two other BALB/c substrains and eight different inbred strains ranged from 0 to 8%. Features characteristic of the hereditary syndrome of testicular feminization (tfm) were observed in a 7-year-old Quarter Horse. The horse had female body habitus and male psychosexual behaviour. Gonads located in the abdomen were testes and the uterus and cervix were absent. The vagina was normal in depth but ended as a blind pocket. The sex chromosome composition of testicular fibroblast and leucocyte cultures was XY. Construction of a family pedigree revealed a pattern of hereditary transmission similar to that reported for tfm in other mammalian species.

This is a follow-up study of male and female offspring of mothers who were part of a double-blind placebo controlled investigation during the years 1951-1952, originally aimed at determining the usefulness of DES administration in maintaining pregnancy. So far, 84 DES-exposed females, 43 female controls, 42 DES-exposed males and 37 male controls have been examined. Six cases of congenital vaginal atresia are described. Three of these patients had cryptomenorrhea while the other 3 had severe coital difficulties.
