Agenesia of the Müllerian ducts is a low-frequency congenital disease but with devastating effects on women's reproductive health. In this paper we present two cases of women affected by Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH). First case was a 17-year-old woman with aplasia of the upper vagina and absence of uterus. No other defects were found and was classified as type 1-MRKH. Second case was 18-year-old woman with absence of uterus, escoliosis and polycystic ovary syndrome, classified as type II-MRKH. Patients were seen at the Hospital with primary amenorrhea and fully developed seco

Imperforate hymen is a congenital anomaly of female external genitalia, which is mostly diagnosed in puberty, at the age of 9-13 years, or very rarely at a younger age. Clinical picture varies from abdominal pain and low back pain to acute urinary retention. We describe a case of a 16-month-old female infant where the imperforate hymen presented as a vaginal cyst. The cyst was first observed by the patient's mother, although the child had been examined by a paediatrician on several occasions after birth. Complete workup performed for differential diagnosis, mostly to exclude other reproductive

Similar to other anorectal malformations, cloaca also represents a spectrum of defects that goes from "benign" cloaca with a good functional prognosis that can be repaired with a relatively simple surgical technique, to very complex malformations with many anatomic variations that require different surgical maneuvers to be able to successfully reconstruct those patients. The group of patients born with a "benign" type of cloaca will have bowel and urinary control, will become sexually active and may get pregnant and deliver by cesarean section. All this is possible, provided the malformation i

OBJECTIVES: Vaginal septa and associated mullerian anomalies can be difficult to diagnose and manage. This case series intends to educate the readers about the benefits and limitations of radiologic techniques both for the investigation as well as for the surgical management of these cases. It also seeks to inform them about a unique combination of vaginal and uterine anomalies known as Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome.
CASES: Three cases were discussed, each with a different presentation. All of the cases included obstructed right hemivagina and right renal agenesis. One case was associated

Urinary incontinence in juvenile female dogs is often associated with urogenital anatomic anomalies. Study objectives include: (1) determine hospital prevalence of urinary incontinence in juvenile female soft-coated wheaten terriers (SCWTs) compared to other affected dogs; (2) characterize anatomic anomalies affecting urinary incontinent juvenile female SCWTs utilizing uroendoscopy; and (3) compare incidence of ectopic ureters, paramesonephric remnants, and short urethras in juvenile female urinary incontinent SCWTs to other juvenile female dogs with urinary incontinence. We hypothesize juveni

OBJECTIVE: To report a novel surgical technique of transvaginal excision of bilateral refluxing single ureteral stumps in an adult female, with emphasis on the technique, the difficulties of the procedure, and other surgical consideration such as bladder neck reconstruction and use of pubovaginal sling in patients with these congenital anomalies.
METHODS: The procedure starts with cystoscopy for identification and catheterization of the orifices of remnant ectopic ureters. This is important to facilitate close dissection of ureteral stumps without the risk of vascular and visceral injury. A w

BACKGROUND: To open vaginal cavity to the pelvic floor is part of surgical treatment for urogenital sinus (UGS) in girls with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). For high UGS, this operative procedure can be challenging and may jeopardise urinary continence. Combined perineal and laparoscopic approaches could be useful to minimise perineal dissection and to facilitate the vaginal lowering.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report the procedure of a laparoscopic-assisted vaginal pull-through for supra-sphincteric UGS in a 5-year-old girl with CAH. Laparoscopic dissection of the vagina from the poster

STUDY QUESTION: How comprehensive is the recently published European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE)/European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (ESGE) classification system of female genital anomalies?
SUMMARY ANSWER: The ESHRE/ESGE classification provides a comprehensive description and categorization of almost all of the currently known anomalies that could not be classified properly with the American Fertility Society (AFS) system.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Until now, the more accepted classification system, namely that of the AFS, is associated with serious limitatio

This case involves a patient with the congenital absence of the lower third of the vagina. While undergoing surgical restoration of the vagina, she sustained a laceration, which ultimately led to the development of a rectovaginal fistula. After two unsuccessful attempts at repair, the recommendation was for a diverting colostomy with another attempted repair, and she presented to our clinic to discuss other possible surgical options. The patient underwent repair of the fistula using a porcine-derived small intestinal submucosal extracellular matrix graft, which resulted in the repair of the re

BACKGROUND: Common uterine anomalies are important owing to their impact on fertility, and complex mesonephric anomalies and certain Müllerian malformations are particularly important because they cause serious clinical symptoms and affect woman's quality of life, in addition to creating fertility problems. In these cases of complex female genital tract malformations, a correct diagnosis is essential to avoid inappropriate and/or unnecessary surgery. Therefore, acquiring and applying the appropriate embryological knowledge, management and therapy is a challenge for gynaecologists. Here, we con

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) patients are characterized by congenital aplasia of the uterus and the upper part of the vagina, with normal secondary sexual characteristics. This disorders affects one in 4000-5000 females and it is classified as typical, type I or isolated, and as atypical, type II, manifesting additional malformations. To date, no specific study has addressed the question of facial features in MRKH patients. The aim of this study is to perform a dysmorphological assessment of a large cohort of patients. We studied 115 women referred to our center from 2008 to 2012. Sev

The imperforate hymen is a congenital anomaly of the female genital development. This is a rare pathology with an estimated incidence of 0.1% in female newborns. In many cases, the diagnosis goes unnoticed until puberty, debuting with cyclical abdominal pain in adolescents who have not submitted menarche. Diagnosis is based on history and physical examination, although additional tests, especially the ultrasound that allows to confirm clinical diagnosis and to exclude other genital malformations. We report a case of a 13-year-old that was diagnosed after consulting several times for recurrent

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKHS) is a rare disease characterized by congenital aplasia of uterus and vagina. Although many studies have investigated several candidate genes, up to now none of them seem to be responsible for the aetiology of the syndrome. In our study, we identified differences in gene expression profile of in vitro cultured vaginal tissue of MRHKS patients using whole-genome microarray analysis. A group of eight out of sixteen MRKHS patients that underwent reconstruction of neovagina with an autologous in vitro cultured vaginal tissue were subjected to microarra

PURPOSE: To investigate a better approach for androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) treatment using laparoscopic peritoneal or ileal vaginoplasty.
METHOD: Improved laparoscopic peritoneal vaginoplasty and gasless laparoscopic ileal vaginoplasty were, respectively, applied to AIS patients in vaginal reconstruction. The operation condition and surgical results were summarized and follow-up was performed from the 5th week after operation, then once a month. The sexual function was scored by Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), and FSFI score >30 represented a very good sexual function, 25-30 as

Cloacal anomalies occur when failure of the urogenital septum to separate the cloacal membrane results in the urethra, vagina, rectum and anus opening into a single common channel. The reported incidence is 1:50,000 live births. Short-term paediatric outcomes of surgery are well reported and survival into adulthood is now usual, but long-term outcome data are less comprehensive. Chronic renal failure is reported to occur in 50 % of patients with cloacal anomalies, and 26-72 % (dependant on the length of the common channel) of patients experience urinary incontinence in adult life. Defaecation

This chapter refers only to female patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). CAH represents the largest subgroup of individuals with 46,XX disorders of sex development. The stimulation of the androgen production leads to a prenatal virilization among these girls. The phenotype is influenced by the severity of the enzyme defect, leading to a virilization of the external genitalia in varying degrees. On the other hand, the affected girls are clearly anatomically female with regularly developed female internal genitalia. Female puberty and potential female fertility are therefore to be

The new classification system of uterine anomalies from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology and the European Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy defines T-shaped and tubular-shaped infantilis uteri as 'dysmorphic'. Such malformations have been proven to be associated with poor reproductive performance. A prospective observational study was conducted with 30 infertile women with dysmorphic uterus who underwent the novel Hysteroscopic Outpatient Metroplasty to Expand Dysmorphic Uteri (HOME-DU ) technique. Incisions are made on the uterine walls with a 5 Fr bipolar electrod
