Anogenital distance (AGD) is a dose-responsive biomarker of disrupted fetal androgen signalling. Because AGD remains relatively stable after birth, its measurement provides a retrospective indicator of fetal androgen action and has proven valuable in toxicity research, particularly for identifying chemical exposures with anti-androgenic properties. Although initially described as an anatomical trait for sexing neonatal animals, rodent toxicity studies in the 1990s established AGD as an androgen-sensitive endpoint following in utero exposure. Importantly, reduced AGD was consistently associated

Biallelic variants in PAICS, one of the 10 genes involved in the de novo purine synthesis (DNPS), were originally associated with an extremely rare phenotype characterized by multiple and severe congenital abnormalities, such as polyhydramnios due to esophageal atresia, congenital heart disease, and urogenital anomalies, which were lethal within the first days of life. Vertebral and limb defects, as well as distinctive craniofacial features, were also described. To date, three patients with these clinical characteristics but without neurologic involvement have been described in the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors of testicular atrophy after laparoscopic orchiopexy in children and to construct a predictive model. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical data of children diagnosed with cryptorchidism and treated with laparoscopic orchiopexy in our department from June 2021 to December 2023. Patients were divided into an atrophy group (Group A, n = 36 testes) and a non-atrophy group (Group B, n = 149 testes) based on postoperative outcomes. The clinical data of the two groups were compared, including age, surgical side, weight, premature bi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To perform a critical reassessment in advances in ultrasound technology and describe its use and misuse in the evaluation of common pediatric urology scrotal and groin pathologies. RECENT FINDINGS: While ultrasound capabilities have improved over time, there is still an overreliance on ultrasound in the diagnosis and management of pediatric urology conditions that can be diagnosed on history and physical examination, leading to delays in referral, delays in treatment, increased healthcare costs, and caregiver anxiety. Updates in ultrasound technology show promise of increasi

CASE SUMMARY: Cryptorchidism is a condition rarely encountered in cats, with a reported prevalence below 3.8%. In the canine species, it is known to predispose for both testicular torsion and neoplasia; therefore, cryptorchidectomy is recommended. Although neoplasia was previously described in feline cryptorchid testes, testicular torsion is a very rare condition in cats. This is the first description of testicular torsion in a non-neoplastic, abdominal testis of a tom cat. A 1-year-old male domestic longhair cat was admitted for elective orchidectomy. Physical examination revealed right unila

BACKGROUND/AIM: Perineal ectopic testis (PET) is a very rare condition in the spectrum of abnormally located testis and should be looked for in all children with an empty scrotum who do not have undescended testis (UDT). While the etiology of testicular ectopia is not completely known, the complications are similar to that of UDT, and timely placement in scrotum is critical. Single incision scrotal orchiopexy is increasingly used for low-lying UDT. The aim of this study is to present our experience with parascrotal orchiopexy in the management of PET.

Vanishing testis is also known as testicular regression syndrome, which is atrophy and disappearance of one testis during fetal life. Vanishing testis accounts for < 5% of undescended testis. Vanishing testis is a rare condition that must be remembered in the differential diagnosis of undescended testis. We report a case of vanishing testis in a young man of 29 years old who underwent inguinal exploration for nonpalpable undescended testis. There was no obvious testis at exploration and instead the vas deferens together with cord vessels ended blindly distally. The spermatic cord was excised a

The sheep Y chromosome encodes genes essential for testicular development and spermatogenesis, yet their transcriptional dynamics across developmental and pathological states remain largely uncharacterized. Here, we profiled Y-linked gene expression using RNA-seq datasets from Hu sheep testes across postnatal development (0, 3, 6, 12 months) and from divergent testicular (large, normal, small, cryptorchid) and epididymal (large, small) weights. Developmental trajectory analysis of 134 expressed Y-linked genes revealed three distinct patterns: progressive activation from birth to sexual maturit

OBJECTIVE: Hypospadias is a prevalent congenital anomaly (0.3%-1.0%); however, severe hypospadias (defined as proximal cases with the meatus at the penoscrotal junction, scrotum, or perineum) is a rare and clinically challenging entity with a multifactorial etiology. This study aimed to characterize the interrelationships among the clinical, endocrine, and genetic profiles in children with severe hypospadias.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive analysis of 34 male patients with severe hypospadias. Preoperative hormone levels were measured using two methods: chemiluminescent im

OBJECTIVE: Inguinal cryptorchidism, a common congenital anomaly in pediatric patients, is a major risk factor for testicular torsion. Its abnormal anatomical location and atypical clinical manifestations frequently lead to delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis. This study aims to systematically review existing evidence to clarify the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic and therapeutic key points, and prognosis of testicular torsion secondary to inguinal cryptorchidism, with the goal of providing robust, evidence-based references for clinical practice.
METHOD: This narrative review synthesi

BACKGROUND: Testicular torsion in undescended testes (UDT) has poor salvage rates, but it remains unclear if the cryptorchid state itself confers an intrinsic disadvantage. We aimed to compare testicular salvage between UDT and descended torsion while controlling for presentation variables.
METHODS: In a single-institutional retrospective cohort (2010-2024), using propensity score matching, 25 UDT torsion cases were matched 1:2 to 129 descended torsion controls on age, ischemia time, and testicular volume. The primary outcome was salvage on post-operative imaging (≥50% volume of contralateral

INTRODUCTION: The optimal surgical technique for bringing intra-abdominally retained testes into the scrotum remains controversial. The most commonly applied procedure is Fowler-Stephens orchidopexy, while the vessel-sparing Shehata technique has emerged az an alternative approach.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of the two-stage Fowler-Stephens orchidopexy in patients with intra-abdominally retained testes, with particular emphasis on surgical success and testicular atrophy rates, and to compare the results and data reported in the international litera

Cryptorchidism is one of the most frequently diagnosed developmental disorders of the male canine reproductive system, defined as the failure of one or both testes to descend into the scrotum. Physiologically, testicular descent is typically completed by six to eight weeks of age, although some authors extend this period to sixteen weeks. Failure of testicular descent beyond this timeframe is considered pathological. The condition has multiple causes and affects between 1% and 10% of the canine population. Genetics is the most significant factor, indicating the hereditary basis of cryptorchidi

Prune belly syndrome (PBS), or Eagle-Barrett syndrome, is a rare congenital disorder defined by a triad of abdominal wall hypoplasia, urinary tract anomalies, and bilateral cryptorchidism. It is associated with high perinatal morbidity and mortality. A male infant born at 37 weeks via vaginal delivery presented with abdominal distension, thin wrinkled abdominal skin, urine discharge from the umbilicus, and bilateral cryptorchidism. Imaging revealed severe bilateral hydronephrosis and a patent urachus, confirming Prune Belly Syndrome. The urachus was surgically closed without complications, and

Cryptorchidism, among the most frequent congenital urogenital anomalies in male infants, has a global prevalence ranging from 1% to 9%. Characterized by failure of testicular descent into the scrotum, such a condition exposes the testes to elevated temperature, oxidative stress, and impaired spermatogenesis, significantly increasing risks of infertility and testicular cancer. Although orchiopexy is the standard treatment, long-term spermatogenic defects often persist, highlighting the need to elucidate underlying molecular mechanisms. Although the main mechanistic experiments were performed in

CASE SUMMARY: An 8-year-old, male domestic shorthair cat presented with a firm mass in the right inguinal region. Microscopic evaluation of the surgically excised mass revealed a soft tissue sarcoma (STS), with features most consistent with a malignant nerve sheath tumor (MNST), infiltrating the epididymis of an atrophic intra-inguinal cryptorchid testis. The tumor showed classical Antoni A and B patterns on histopathology, with spindle cells arranged in short interlacing fascicles, and a mitotic count of 14 per 10 high-power fields, supportive of a malignant form. Immunohistochemistry reveale

BACKGROUND: Adenomatoid tumor is a rare benign neoplasm of mesothelial origin, most commonly arising in the epididymis, vas deferens, and tunica vaginalis; primary occurrence in the testis is extremely rare. Cryptorchidism is recognized as a risk factor for testicular germ cell tumors, but its association with adenomatoid tumors remains hypothetical, as there is limited mechanistic evidence directly linking cryptorchidism to mesothelial tumorigenesis in the testis. Moreover, multiple primary malignancies may be related to impaired immune surveillance or genetic susceptibility, though these mec

Acute appendicitis may mask rare surgical emergencies. Torsion of an intra-abdominal undescended testis with malignancy is exceptionally uncommon. A 27-year-old man presented with 3 days of right lower quadrant pain, vomiting, and anorexia. Examination showed peritonitis and an absent right testis. Laparotomy for presumed appendicitis revealed a normal appendix and an 11 × 13 × 12 cm intra-abdominal mass with a 540° torsed spermatic cord. Right radical orchiectomy was performed. Histopathology confirmed classical seminoma. Final stage was pT2N0M0S0 Stage IB. Giant torsed seminoma can mimic app

PURPOSE: Inguinal hernia (IH) and undescended testis (UDT) frequently coexist in infants, creating a dilemma regarding optimal surgical timing. Although early IH repair is recommended to prevent incarceration, orchiopexy is typically deferred to allow for potential spontaneous testicular descent. However, spontaneous descent occurs predominantly within the first few months of life and is unlikely after 6 months, particularly in cases of nonpalpable UDT. Despite these considerations, evidence guiding the management of infants with concurrent IH and nonpalpable UDT, especially during early infan
