Transverse testicular ectopia is an extremely rare anomaly, characterized by migration of one testis towards the opposite inguinal canal, usually associated with inguinal hernia. Perineal ectopic testis is a rare congenital malformation in which the testis is abnormally situated between the penoscrotal raphe and the genitofemoral fold. We have reviewed the outcome after relapse in a cohort of 505 children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) seen at a single institution. The majority of relapses (74%) occurred within 3 years from diagnosis, and most involved the bone marrow alone or with overt extramedullary relapse. Early relapse was more common in children with T-ALL and those with unfavourable cytogenetics. Factors influencing second remission included length of first remission and type of relapse. In cases in which the testis crosses the midline, the cord structures may cross intra-abdominally or after exiting the inguinal canal. Transverse ectopic testis (TET) is a rare form of ectopic testis. The authors report the case of a 2-month-old infant presenting with right inguinoscrotal hernia and ectopic left testis with an impalpable testis. Opening of the hernia sac revealed two testes with two distally fused vasa deferentes. The contralateral testis was easily descended by translocation through the other inguinal canal. A favourable result was obtained with two testes situated in a normal position. In the light of this case, the authors emphasize the clinical and therapeutic features of this anomaly.

Perineal ectopia testis is a rare congenital anomaly with incidence of < 1% of all cases of undescended testes. We report a case of perineal ectopic testis detected by ultrasound at 38 weeks gestational age presenting as an oval echogenic structure located beneath the male fetal genitals. The diagnosis was confirmed postpartum by clinical examination and karyotyping of the neonate. Orchiopexy was performed 1 year after delivery.

Perineal ectopic testis is a rare congenital anomaly and remains a urologic curiosity. We report the course of 2 recurrent cases after hormonal therapy and a third case associated with inguinal hernia. During the surgical exploration, the gubernaculum testis was found fixed to the perineum. The testes were placed in the scrotum. The evaluation of differential diagnosis of empty scrotum is recommended.

PURPOSE: Perineal ectopic testis is seen very rarely and here we report on two patients with perineal ectopic testis.
METHODS/RESULTS: We experienced two cases of perineal ectopic testis on which orchiopexies to the corresponding hemiscrotums were performed.
CONCLUSIONS: On surgical exploration, the gubernaculum testes were found to lie fixed to the perineum.

STUDY AIM: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the laparoscopic diagnosis of contralateral patent processus vaginalis in children with unilateral inguinal hernia.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Between November 1995 and February 1998, 91 consecutive children (78 boys, 13 girls) under the age of 1 year were operated on for a unilateral inguinal hernia. A contralateral hernia was diagnosed by a laparoscopy through the inguinal hernia sac before ligation. Results of this technique were correlated with those of herniography (79 cases) or with inguinal exploration (12 emergency).
