We report the case of a 35-year-old patient with a syndrome of persistent Müllerian ducts (PMDS) of the female type (group A). The diagnosis was made in adulthood during an infertility workup. Clinical examination revealed an empty scrotum, a normal penis and bilateral inguinal cystic masses. The spermogram found azoospermia. Imaging using MRI and tomotensidometry found the presence of an uterus, two fallopian tubes and two inguinal positions of polycystic testes. A surgical management was performed for surgical testicular biopsy. Histological examination then found a cystic formation of multi

Extratesticular cystic and solid scrotal masses are commonly encountered in pediatrics. The most common extratesticular malignancy is paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma. The remainder of the common pathologies encountered -- appendage torsion, epididymitis and varicoceles -- are mostly benign. These frequently encountered benign lesions are confidently differentiated from paratesticular rhadbomyosarcoma using high-frequency scrotal sonography in combination with clinical features. Less commonly encountered extratesticular masses may not be as easily classified; however, these also have distinguis

An 8-year-old intact rabbit was presented to a veterinary hospital with a complaint of enlarged left scrotum. Histological examination revealed a single large cyst adjacent to an efferent ductule-like tissue. The cyst wall was composed of monolayer cuboidal cells surrounded by dysplastic testicular tissue, and the seminiferous tubules were not developed at all. The epithelial cells of the cyst possessed the same properties as the epithelial cells of the rete testis that were positive for CD 10 and cytokeratin 18, negative for p63 and lacked desmin-positive muscular layer. The dysplastic testic

Described herein are six cases of transverse testicular ectopia. All patients who underwent orchidopexy at the one pediatric surgical unit between October 2001 and January 2008 were evaluated. The medical records of all patients diagnosed with transverse testicular ectopia were evaluated retrospectively. Five patients (84%) were admitted with a symptomatic right inguinal hernia and empty scrotum on the left side. Only one child (16%) had left-sided hernia and right non-palpable testis (age ranged from 1 month to 3 years). Four patients (66%) were diagnosed in the operating theatre and the last

PURPOSE: There is a controversy concerning infant testicular prosthesis. The problem is that this may necessitate further surgery to insert a larger prosthesis when the child gets older. An alternative strategy is to delay the placement of the definitive prosthesis until the child reaches adolescence. However, the underdeveloped scrotum may fail to accommodate the desired sized testicular prosthesis. We present scrotoplasty using hyaluronic acid gel injection as a minimally-invasive alternative to enhance the volume of scrotum until puberty.

The presence of ectopic splenic tissue in the scrotum is attributed to splenogonadal fusion, a rare congenital anomaly. This ectopic splenic tissue can be an incidental finding or less often present as a scrotal mass later in adult life. Given the rarity of splenogonadal fusion, especially in the adult population, this case highlights the clinical characteristics of the condition, with a special focus on the signs and findings that might help prevent unnecessary orchiectomy.

Hypospadias is the second most common congenital malformation in males. Etiology remains unknown in about 70% of the cases. Distal hypospadias is considered not only developmental abnormality of the urethra in males, but it may also constitute a mild form of sexual development disorder in 46,XY males. Most urologists and endocrinologists consider that it is necessary to perform a detailed investigation of children presenting with proximal hypospadias associated with a small phallus or poorly developed scrotum and undescended testes. Currently, there is no generally accepted recommendation for

Skin findings are common during the newborn examination. Although these findings are often benign, it is important to visualize the entire skin surface to distinguish these findings and appropriately reassure parents. The chest should be observed for symmetric movement, pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum, prominent xiphoid, or breast tissue. The infant should be as relaxed as possible so that the physician can more easily detect any abdominal masses, which are often renal in origin. A single umbilical artery may be associated with another congenital abnormality, especially renal anomalies, and

Transverse testicular ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly in which both testes migrate along the same inguinal canal toward the scrotum. This report describes the case of the rarest form of transverse testicular ectopia in a 23-year-old man with coexisting testicular microlithiasis in one of the two testes as diagnosed on sonography and confirmed on MRI. We are unaware of any previous published reports of this association. Although the etiology of both conditions is debatable, each is believed to be associated with an increased risk of testicular malignancy, and this poses a dilemma for the f

Anomalies of testicular descent are very common but scrotal wall deformity leading to extrusion of testes is very rare. This anomaly is described as scrotoschisis or testicular exstrophy. In English literature less than 15 cases were reported till date to the best of our knowledge. A rare case of unilateral testicular exstrophy in a full term 3-day-old neonate is reported here along with review of literature and discussions on probable etiology.

BACKGROUND: Undescended testes is one of the most common congenital abnormalities in boys. In cases of impalpable testes, ultrasound is often used to find the testis, which frequently provides false-negative results. Recently, laparoscopy has become popular in the management of impalpable testes.
METHODS: Retrospective study of all children with impalpable testes presenting for laparoscopy between August 2007 and July 2011 who had undergone ultrasound examinations without localizing the testes was conducted and the role of laparoscopy in diagnosing impalpable testes was evaluated.
RESULTS: T

Hypospadias is the most common congenital malformation of the male external genitalia. After the heart and circulatory system, it is the second most common developmental disorder in males. It is due to a midline fusion defect of the male urethra, which results in a misplaced urethral meatus. Hypospadias may be distal, medial and proximal. It may occur as an isolated defect or it may develop together with other genital disorders (retention of testes in one or both sides, microphallus, bifid scrotum) or with malformation of other organs. In some cases syndromic forms may also occur. Genetic fact

Testicular dysmorphism (TD) associated with infantile abdominoscrotal hydrocele (ASH) may be due to the pressure effect of hydrocele on the testis or may be a developmental abnormality. Only a few reports are referred to the etiology of testicular changes in infantile ASH. We present an additional case of infantile ASH together with a review of the literature, focusing on insights into etiology of TD and its appropriate management.

A 2-month-old kitten exhibited simultaneously an imperforate anus, hypospadias, rectourethral fistula and genital dysgenesis (penis restricted to the glans, absence of prepuce and bifid scrotum). Surgical correction consisted of separation of the urinary and digestive tracts, perineal urethrostomy and connection of the rectum to the newly made anal opening. Pathological examination of the testes, conventionally removed at 9 months of age, showed no mature spermatozoa and underdevelopment of germ and Leydig cells. In humans, the absence of an anal opening in association with abnormal sexual dev

48, XXYY is a very rare sex chromosome aneuploidy, characterized by both an extra X and Y chromosome with a prevalence of 1:18,000-1:40,000. Most patients are diagnosed prenatally by cytogenetic examination of amniotic fluid, or during the first years of life because of severe developmental delay, cognitive impairment and behavioural disorders. This syndrome shares two findings with Klinefelter syndrome, namely tall stature and hypergonadotropic hypogonadism but at this time no genital anomalies have been reported in patients with this tetrasomy. We describe a 48, XXYY neonate and a clinical p

AIM: To document the incidence of complete testicular epididymal dissociation (CTED) in the cryptorchid testis and evaluate its operative outcome.
METHODS: The presence of CTED was noted prospectively in cases of undescended testis and the operative findings were studied.
RESULTS: CTED was encountered in 11 testes in 10 boys out of 29 intra-abdominal testes among the 142 undescended testes (8%) operated. Ages of patients varied from 18 months-14 years (median 4.5 years). All 11 testes were intra-abdominal. In 5 out of 11 testes, the dissociation was associated with a wide separation of the e

A total of 51,161 records of scrotal circumference measurements at 18 mo of age (SC18) and 17,648 records of sperm defects and breeding soundness of Nellore bulls (mean age of 22.5 mo), raised under extensive conditions, were analyzed to estimate coefficients of heritability and genetic correlations of morphological semen traits by Bayesian inference. The observed semen traits were classified as minor (MID), major (MAD), and total sperm defects (TD). The animals were classified according to breeding soundness as satisfactory and unsatisfactory potential breeders. The (co)variance components an

Crossed testicular ectopia/transverse testicular ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly. It is most commonly identified intraoperatively in the setting of inguinal hernia repair with contralateral cryptorchidism. We report a case of crossed testicular ectopia identified in a 3-month-old male who presented with right cryptorchidism. Preoperative ultrasound revealed no testicle on the right and two testicles on the left - one within the left hemiscrotum and one within the left inguinal canal. Laparoscopy at 7 months of age revealed a closed right external ring and right ectopic testicle at the lef

This case of ectopic testis highlights the importance of a thorough first newborn examination followed by senior review when appropriate, and the expertise required to interpret neonatal ultrasounds. Following a provisional diagnosis of unilateral undescended testicle in a newborn, an ultrasound scan was unable to correctly identify the condition, resulting in a delay in diagnosis. The condition was later recognised incidentally, which led to a successful surgical correction. The early clinical examination and recognition of ectopic testis allows a timely surgical intervention preventing poten
