BACKGROUND: Large-for-gestational-age (LGA) infants are a common complication of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), increasing the risk of obstetric trauma and long-term metabolic disorders. Pre-pregnancy body mass index (ppBMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG) are modifiable maternal factors, but their joint impact on LGA in sub-high-altitude, multiethnic populations remain unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the independent and combined associations of ppBMI and GWG with LGA risk among women with GDM in a sub-high-altitude, multiethnic region of southwestern China.
METHODS: In this retrospec

BACKGROUND: Children with hematological cancers are vulnerable to anxiety symptoms during chemotherapy. Coping is a modifiable psychosocial factor that can be assessed and supported in pediatric oncology nursing practice. However, previous studies have mainly examined coping strategies separately, providing limited insight into how different coping characteristics may co-occur among children with varying levels of anxiety symptoms. This study aimed to examine coping-related factors associated with anxiety symptoms and to identify coping configurations associated with high and low anxiety sympt

PURPOSE: The objective of this review is to present androgen insensitivity syndrome as a multidimensional disorder, with a focus on psychological issues, gender identity, and sexual functioning. It also discusses therapeutic options, such as psychological and psychiatric support.
VIEWS: Androgen insensitivity syndrome is a rare disorder of sex development that occurs in individuals with an XY karyotype. It is caused by a mutation in the androgen receptor gene, leading to reduced sensitivity to androgens. There are three forms: mild, partial, and complete androgen insensitivity syndrome. Indiv

BACKGROUND: Hyperandrogenemia (HA) and low sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) are core features of polycystic ovary syndrome. The creatinine-to-albumin ratio (CAR), a simple renal-nutritional marker linked to female infertility, has not been studied in relation to HA or low SHBG.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of CAR with low SHBG and HA, defined by the free androgen index (FAI), in U.S. women of reproductive age.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis of NHANES 2013-2016, we included 683 women aged 18-49 years. CAR (serum creatinine/albumin) was categorized into tertiles; low SHB

BACKGROUND: Patients with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH) who undergo neovagina reconstruction remain at risk of Human papillomavirus infection (HPV), yet evidence regarding their awareness of HPV-related health risks and engagement in preventive behaviours is limited. This study aimed to assess HPV-related awareness, preventive practices and behavioural factors among Chinese patients with MRKH syndrome after neovagina reconstruction, and to describe HPV screening and vaccination uptake in this population.
METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted at a

OBJECTIVE: Gorgan, in northern Iran, is a humid region where Toxoplasma gondii is common. The association with psychiatric illness has never been examined there. We measured seroprevalence in psychiatric inpatients and matched controls, quantified it for each major DSM-5 diagnostic category, and identified local risk factors for infection.
METHOD: A case-control study was conducted with 100 psychiatric inpatients and 100 healthy controls, frequency-matched 1:1 on sex and 5-year age stratum. Diagnoses were recorded as free text at discharge by the attending psychiatrists under DSM-5 criteria a

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of birth defects; most critical (c)CHD newborns will develop neurodevelopmental disorders. Abnormal placental development may be involved, as genetics explains only 30% of sporadic CHD cases. Growing evidence suggests that placental dysfunction may result in heart and brain defects, as it shares a common early development. We hypothesized that newborns with critical CHD exhibit sex-specific alterations in placental mitochondrial biogenesis and function which may affect the fetal growth trajectory. Term placenta and paired umbilical cord (UC)

Rodent models have become indispensable tools for investigating the neurobiological mechanisms underlying human behavior and disease. Despite the substantial phenotypic differences between rodents and humans, shared evolutionary history, conserved genomic architecture, and analogous neural circuitry allow preclinical findings to meaningfully inform our understanding of human conditions. This chapter reviews the behavioral paradigms most commonly used to evaluate five core domains in rodent models: motor function, stress and anxiety-like behavior, repetitive and restrictive behaviors, social be

BACKGROUND: Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) is a leading cause of anovulatory infertility. Although follicular developmental arrest is a defining feature of PMOS, the cell-type-specific mechanisms linking genetic susceptibility, endocrine imbalance and follicular microenvironmental dysfunction remain incompletely understood, particularly across clinical subtypes.
METHODS: We performed single-cell RNA sequencing of preovulatory follicular-fluid cells from healthy controls and women with uncomplicated PMOS, hyperandrogenic PMOS and metformin-treated insulin-resistant PMOS. We in

AMPA receptors (AMPARs) mediate fast excitatory synaptic transmission and are critical for activity-dependent synapse maturation and circuit development. De novo missense mutations in AMPAR subunits are linked to neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), yet how these variants disrupt neuronal function remains unclear. Here, we examine a recurrent pathogenic mutation in the GluA1 subunit (GRIA1 p.A636T) that alters AMPAR function and is associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and intellectual disability (ID). Using GluA1A636T knock-in mice of either sex, we identify impairments in hippocampa

The promotion of brain health has generally been undertaken at the level of individuals, for instance, in the quest for precision treatments for persons with, or at high risk of, neurological disorders. But the growing global burden of neurological conditions and the increasing understanding of the brain's central role in all facets of human life have spurred interest in public health approaches to the brain that emphasise population-level strategies benefitting everyone as part of a "brain health for all" vision of society. This article defines the emerging concept of public brain health as i

BACKGROUND: Significant liver fibrosis can develop in children with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), yet liver biopsy is invasive and unsuitable for repeated assessment. We developed an interpretable, non-invasive prediction model for significant fibrosis in pediatric CHB and evaluated whether baseline risk stratification was associated with subsequent treatment outcomes.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 232 children with CHB who underwent liver biopsy, with significant fibrosis defined as Scheuer stage S ≥ 2. Patients were randomly assigned to a development cohort (80%) and a held-out te

The DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders introduced a dimensional approach to personality pathology, with maladaptive traits assessed by the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 Brief Form (PID-5-BF). Despite extensive validation, evidence on its diagnostic accuracy and empirically derived cutoff scores remains limited. This study aims to compare PID-5-BF trait levels and profiles across individuals with personality disorders (PDs), clinical participants without PDs, and nonclinical participants and to evaluate its diagnostic accuracy and screening cutoffs. This cross-sectional study i

Exercise acts as a non-photic zeitgeber, resetting skeletal muscle circadian clocks that regulate metabolism, mitochondrial function, and insulin sensitivity. This review synthesizes current evidence on how exercise timing modulates skeletal muscle clock function and metabolic adaptation, with emphasis on divergent molecular pathways, sex-specific regulation, chrono-nutrition, and emerging evidence on immune-circadian interactions, myokine-mediated muscle-organ communication, and cellular stress responses. Exercise performed at different circadian phases activates distinct signaling networks d

Background: Transabdominal ultrasonographic measurement of rectal diameter is increasingly used as a non-invasive adjunct for assessing rectal distension and fecal loading in children. However, interpretation is limited by the lack of age-stratified reference data in pediatric populations without bowel dysfunction. This study aimed to characterize the distribution of the laterolateral (LL) rectal diameter across childhood and adolescence and provide preliminary age-stratified empirical reference percentiles. Methods: This single-center cross-sectional study included pediatric participants aged

Turner syndrome (TS) is a chromosomal disorder caused by complete or partial loss of one X chromosome, occurring in approximately 1 in 2500 live female births. Short stature, resulting from haploinsufficiency of the short stature homeobox-containing (SHOX) gene, absence of a pubertal growth spurt, and ovarian insufficiency are hallmark features. Recombinant human growth hormone (GH) therapy remains the mainstay of management, increasing adult height by approximately 5-8cm. This review examines how cytogenetic subtypes influence GH response, focusing on 45,X monosomy, mosaicism, and structural

Sex-specific differences in metabolic and immune function are shaped by endocrine-immune interactions, yet the complexity of this relationship remains poorly understood. Here, we identify an immune cell-like state of tanycytes, an ependymoglial cell type lining the third ventricle that mediates brain-body communication1,2 in both mice and humans. Using single-cell transcriptomics, we provide a high-resolution cellular map of the mouse and human mediobasal hypothalamus with cross-species comparison of tanycytes. We capture dynamic sex-, oestrous cycle- and high-fat diet-dependent transcriptomic

The field of neuroplacentology is a growing area that focuses on the influence of placental function on brain development. This field has expanded our understanding of the placenta's crucial role in proper neurodevelopment as well as placental anomalies that increase the risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Neuroplacentology studies have revealed distinct roles of placentally provided hormones and nutrients in neurodevelopment whose disruption by perinatal problems, including inflammation, can increase the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and ADHD.
