[Back to the future?].

OBJECTIVE: The southeastern United States has the fastest-growing Hispanic/Latino population in the country and carries a disproportionate HIV burden. Among Hispanics/Latinos, men, and men who have sex with men (MSM) in particular, are at elevated risk of HIV infection; however, very few efficacious behavioral HIV prevention interventions are available for use with this vulnerable population. To address this shortage of prevention resources, our community-based participatory research (CBPR) partnership developed and is currently evaluating the efficacy of the HOLA en Grupos intervention to inc

Disorders of sexual development in the cat: Current state of knowledge and diagnostic approach.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Any congenital or developmental abnormality of any part of the male or female reproductive tract is a 'disorder of sexual development' (DSD). The tricolored male cat phenotype, cryptorchidism, gonadal hypoplasia and incidental abnormalities such as cystic remnants or embryonic ducts are well-known feline DSDs. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: Full characterization of DSDs requires sex chromosome determination and identification of genes related to development of the gonads, internal tubular genitalia and external genitalia. Fortunately, affected cats are seen sporadically and the cli

Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS): Case report and review of literature.

Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare form of male pseudohermaphroditism (MPH) which characterized by the presence of uterus, fallopian tubes and upper part of vagina in an otherwise normally differentiated 46, XY male. The syndrome is caused by either an insufficient amount of antimüllerian hormone AMH or by insensitivity of the target organ to this factor, It is usually discovered in patient who assessed for infertility, cryptorchidism or during intra-abdominal surgery. Herein We report a rare presentation case of PMDS with intra-abdominal mass which came to be seminoma.

[A case of complete androgen insensitivity syndrome with special family history and its genetic analysis].

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of complete androgen insensitivity syndrome with a special family history and its genetic analysis. METHODS: We studied the medical history, diagnosis and treatment of a case of complete androgen insensitivity syndrome, collected blood samples from the patient and his mother for whole exome sequencing, and analyzed the genetic etiology. RESULTS: The patient presented with "primary amenorrhea" and diagnosed with male pseudohermaphroditism, with the karyotype as 46, XY. Surgery confirmed undescended testes in the abdominal cavity. The androgen level was higher than

Disorder of Sex Development Due to 17-Beta-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Type 3 Deficiency: A Case Report and Review of 70 Different HSD17B3 Mutations Reported in 239 Patients.

The 17-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 3 (17-β-HSD3) enzyme converts androstenedione to testosterone and is encoded by the HSD17B3 gene. Homozygous or compound heterozygous HSD17B3 mutations block the synthesis of testosterone in the fetal testis, resulting in a Disorder of Sex Development (DSD). We describe a child raised as a female in whom the discovery of testes in the inguinal canals led to a genetic study by whole exome sequencing (WES) and to the identification of a compound heterozygous mutation of the HSD17B3 gene (c.608C>T, p.Ala203Val, and c.645A>T, p.Glu215Asp). Furthermore,

A rare form of male pseudohermaphroditism-Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome.

Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome (PMDS) is a rare disorder of defective sexual development in males. It is characterized by aberrant synthesis or inadequate action of Mullerian inhibiting factor resulting in derivatives of Mullerian duct, i.e. uterus, fallopian tube and upper vagina, to persist in a phenotypic male with 46XY karyotype. Here, we report a 19-year-old male with bilateral undescended testes. Further evaluation revealed that the patient had both his testes placed intra-abdominally along with a rudimentary uterus.

Clinical and diagnostic approach of male pseudo hermaphroditism with os-clitoris in French bulldog: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Hermaphroditism is less frequently reported in dogs and is often associated with infertility. CASE REPORT: An 8-month-old French bulldog weighing 5 kg with an enlarged structure protruding from the vulva was clinically diagnosed with hermaphroditism. Physical, hormonal assay, computed tomography, and gross and histological studies were done in addition to successfully detailed surgical correction. On physical examination, the dog showed the presence of an os-clitoris protruded from the vulvar labia. Hormonal levels of estradiol, testosterone, and progesterone were 6.39 pg/ml, 0.

Transverse testicular ectopia associated with persistent Mullerian duct syndrome in infertile male: two case reports and literature review.

Transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) associated with persistent Mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare form of male pseudohermaphroditism usually unexpectedly found at surgery for cryptorchidism or inguinal hernia in children. Its etiology and prevalence are unclear, although defects in the gene that encodes anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) or AMH receptor has been generally considered as the major cause. Adult cases of TTE associated with PMDS are even more peculiar, as the adult patients usually present more complex medical history, require more comprehensive medical examination and management.

The clinical applications of five-alpha reductase inhibitors.

UNLABELLED: INTRODUCTION Five-alpha reductase (5-AR) deficiency was first identified by Imperato-McGinley and Walsh as the cause of pseudohermaphroditism in two separate studies. The discoveries led to the development of finasteride (inhibitor of type 2 isoenzyme of 5-AR) and dutasteride (inhibitor of type 1 and type 2 isoenzymes of 5-AR. Both drugs have been proven effective for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and improve voiding symptoms, reduce the risk of urinary retention and the need for prostate surgery. Five-alpha reductase inhibitors 5-ARIs have been demonstrated to be c

Sex Reversal Syndrome in an Egyptian Arabian Horse Detected Using Genomic Data - A case report.

A 4-year-old Straight Egyptian Arabian horse was evaluated in 2016 due to a malformation of external genitalia and male sexual behavior. On physical examination, small teats in the inguinal area and a rudimentary penis-like structure surrounded by a clitoral fossa could be seen. There was no evidence of vulva and vaginal canal. A stallion like behavior was observed, especially in the presence of mares in heat, when the animal was excited and aggressive and had erection of the penis-like structure. Blood samples were collected for two purposes: hormonal (testosterone and estradiol plasma concen

Frasier Syndrome: A Rare Cause of Refractory Steroid-Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome.

Frasier syndrome is a rare disease that affects the kidneys and genitalia. Patients who have Frasier syndrome develop nephrotic syndrome (NS) featuring focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) that is resistant to steroid treatment in early childhood. Male patients can have female external genitalia (pseudo-hermaphroditism) at birth and develop gonado-blastoma in their adolescence. Frasier syndrome is caused by mutations in the splice donor site at intron 9 of the Wilms' tumor WT1 gene; these mutations result in an imbalanced ratio of WT1 protein isoforms and affect the development of the uro

Sexual antagonism in haplodiploids.

Females and males may face different selection pressures, such that alleles conferring a benefit in one sex may be deleterious in the other. Such sexual antagonism has received a great deal of theoretical and empirical attention, almost all of which has focused on diploids. However, a sizeable minority of animals display an alternative haplodiploid mode of inheritance, encompassing both arrhenotoky, whereby males develop from unfertilized eggs, and paternal genome elimination (PGE), whereby males receive but do not transmit a paternal genome. Alongside unusual genetics, haplodiploids often exh

Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome: A Rare Case of an Adult Infertile Male with Bilateral Cryptorchidism.

BACKGROUND: Persistent mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a very rare form of internal male pseudohermaphroditism in individuals who are phenotypically males with 46 XY karyotypes harboring internal female reproductive organs which are Mullerian derivatives. It occurs as a defect in the genes coding for the Mullerian inhibiting substance (MIS) or the anti Mullerian hormone (AMH) receptor, ultimately leading to failure of regression of Mullerian ducts. CASE PRESENTATION: A 29-year-old male with PMDS presented with complaints of primary infertility. Diagnosis was made with the help of high index

46 XY undervirulized male DSD: Reporting a patient with prenatally diagnosed disorder/difference of sex development (DSD) with heterozygous LHCGR mutations.

Leydig cell hypoplasia is a rare autosomal recessive condition caused by mutations in luteinizing hormone/chorionic gonadotropin receptor (LHCGR) genes in which 46, XY patients demonstrate a wide spectrum of disorders/differences of sex development (DSD) phenotypes ranging from normal female external genitalia in severe subtypes to micropenis or hypospadias in patients with less severe presentations. Although most patients with LHCGR defects are diagnosed at puberty, here we describe the prenatal diagnosis of 46, XY DSD due to two likely pathogenic variants in LHCGR, one of which has never bee

Congenital Urethrovaginal Fistula with Blind-Ending Vagina in a Female Pseudohermaphrodite Dog with Urinary Incontinence.

An 8 mo old male Doberman pinscher was referred for investigation of persistent urinary incontinence. Physical examination revealed urine leakage and abnormal external genitalia. A computed tomography scan identified a large fluid-filled cavity extending from the caudoventral abdomen displacing the colon and urinary bladder. No retained testicles were identified. A retrograde urethrogram study found a linear communication, cranial to the pubic brim between the urethra to the fluid-filled cavity (fistula). Exploratory celiotomy was performed, and an entire female reproductive tract with a blind

RXR Expression in Marine Gastropods with Different Sensitivity to Imposex Development.

The superposition of male sexual characteristics in female marine gastropods (imposex) represents one of the clearest ecological examples of organotin-mediated endocrine disruption. Recent evidences suggest that signaling pathways mediated by members of the nuclear receptor superfamily, RXR and PPARγ, are involved in the development of this pseudohermaphroditic condition. Here, we identified significant differences in RXR expression in two caenogastropod species from Nuevo Gulf, Argentina, Buccinanops globulosus and Trophon geversianus, which present clear contrast in imposex incidence. In add

A Case of Adenocarcinoma of Uterus Masculinus in a Pomeranian Dog.

Introduction: Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS), or uterus masculinus, is a rare autosomal recessive form of male pseudohermaphroditism due to the failure of paracrine anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) secretion by Sertoli cells or failure of the Müllerian ducts to respond to AMH secretion. The malignant degeneration of persistent Müllerian remnants is rare. In human medicine, few related reports exist. In veterinary medicine, this is the first report describing adenocarcinoma of the uterus masculinus involving the prostate in a dog. Clinical history: An 11-year-old, male, neutered Pomerani
