Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome (PMDS) is a disorder of male pseudohermaphroditism characterized by the persistence of Mullerian duct derivatives (uterus, fallopian tubes, and upper two-third of vagina) in a phenotypically and genotypically male. Transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) is a rare congenital anomaly in which both gonads migrate toward same hemiscrotum. About 150 cases of PMDS and 100 cases of TTE have been reported in previous studies. Testicular tumor in patients with PMDS with TTE is very rare. We report a case of testicular seminoma in a 35-year-old male patient with PMDS and

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) resulting from 17α-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase deficiency (17-OHD) is an uncommon autosomal recessive disease. 17-OHD is caused by mutations in the cytochrome P450c17 gene (CYP17A1), and characterized by hypertension, hypokalemia, female sexual infantilism, or male pseudohermaphroditism. Here we report a case of a 19-year-old Chinese girl (46,XX) with 17-OHD, and analyze her clinical and molecular genetic characteristics. The patient had high blood pressure (147/102 mmHg), irregular menstruation, hypomenorrhea, and normal serum potassium. Physical examination s

According to additional anomalies, transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) is classified into three groups. Type-2 TTE, accompanied by persistent mullerian duct syndrome, constitutes approximately 20% of the patients. Surgical treatment should be planned after careful physical examination, ultrasonography, and genetic/endocrinologic evaluation. Herniorrhaphy, orchiopexy with testicular biopsy, and excision of the mullerian structures are the most appropriate surgical approaches in cases of TTE with persistent mullerian duct syndrome. We aimed to share our approach to the diagnosis and treatment of

A majority of cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV); however, HPV-negative cervical cancers exist and, though rare, are more aggressive. No prior reports examine HPV-negative cancer of the cervix in a female pseudohermaphrodite with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). This is a case of a 78-year-old phenotypic male with hypospadias and absent testicles who presented with urinary retention and urosepsis. He was diagnosed with a pelvic mass on imaging and with a female mosaic karyotype (45,X/47,XXX/46 XX). He was taken to the operating room and found to have a rare form of

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa where sickle cell trait (SCT) and malaria is prevalent, significant proportions of blood donors may be affected by one or more of these abnormalities. The haemato-biochemical properties of SCT and asymptomatic malaria in donor blood have not been evaluated. This study evaluated the haemato-biochemical impact of SCT and asymptomatic malaria infections in citrate-phosphate-dextrose-adenine (CPDA-1) stored donor blood units.
METHODS: Fifty-milliliters of sterile CPDA-1 anti-coagulated blood were drained into the sample pouch attached to the main blood bag. Ten u

Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a pseudohermaphroditism in males characterized by the presence of Müllerian duct derivatives. As PMDS dogs often lack clinical symptoms, a molecular diagnosis is essential to identify the syndrome in these animals. In this study, a new molecular method using DNA mismatch-specific Surveyor nuclease was developed. The Surveyor nuclease assay identified the AMHR2 mutation that produced PMDS in a Miniature Schnauzer as accurately as that obtained by using the conventional method based on restriction digestion. As an alternative to the current molecular

17β-Hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 3 (17β-HSD3) is expressed almost exclusively in the testes and specifically converts the weak androgenic androstenedione to active testosterone (T) in the presence of NADPH. Additionally, studies have demonstrated that 17β-HSD3 is over-expressed in hormone-dependent prostate cancer. T, which interacts with the androgen receptor (AR), eventually stimulates the growth of prostate cancer cells. Defects in T synthesis or action impair the development of the male phenotype during embryogenesis and cause the autosomal recessive disorder male pseudohermaphroditis

Hernia uteri inguinalis (HUI) is one of the rarest causes of male pseudo-hermaphroditism worldwide. We report the case of a 49-year-old male with discovery of this anomaly during inguinal hernia repair. A 49-year-old man presented to the clinic for recurrent inguinal hernia with enlarging left scrotum consistent with hydrocele on imaging. Upon exploration of the left groin, the left testis was pulled up into the abdomen, revealing a uterus, fallopian tube, and a second atrophic testis. Despite the rarity of HUI, the differential diagnosis for inguinal hernia with associated cryptorchidism and/

Androgen insensitivity syndrome is the most common cause of male pseudohermaphroditism and the third most common cause of primary amenorrhea. This genetic alteration is a consequence of inherited defects on the X chromosome causing total or partial damage to the intrauterine virilization process due to functional abnormalities in the androgen receptors. The present report describes a 22-year-old patient with a female phenotype and a 46, XY karyotype, presenting with bilateral inguinal tumors. The tumors were surgically removed at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia Hospital in Vitória, Espírito San

BACKGROUND: Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS), a rare form of male pseudohermaphroditism in dogs, is an abnormal sexual phenotype in males that is characterized by the existence of a hypoplastic oviduct, uterus, and cranial part of the vagina. Dogs suffering from PMDS are often accompanied by cryptorchidism. To date, it has been mainly found in the Miniature Schnauzer breed.
CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, two cases of PMDS with a malignant testicular tumor originating from cryptorchidism in breeds other than the Miniature Schnauzer breed are described. The patients were a seven-ye

BACKGROUND: Ambiguous genitalia is an uncommon situation that happens between 1 and 2 per every 1000 live births and falls under the umbrella diagnosis of disorders of sexual development.
CASE: In this article, we report a case of male pseudohermaphroditism with ambiguous genitalia. The proband was a 12 yr old girl without any uterus or ovarian tissues. Karyotype of the case is 46, XY. Genes involved in sexual differentiation such as AR, SRD5A2, LH, LHR, FSH, 17 B HSD and SRY genes were sequenced in both directions. No mutations were found in these genes either.
CONCLUSION: It seems advisabl

This paper explores the plasticity of sexually dimorphic characters in subadult female Brevimyrus niger, an African weakly electric mormyrid species. Thirty-five fish were exposed in a staggered fashion (five fish a week) to aromatizable 17α-methyltestosterone over a period of 7 weeks; 18 fish served as untreated controls. 17α-MT induced precocious vitellogenesis that mirrored the natural maturational process during seasonal ovarian recrudescence. At the same time, 17α-MT exposure resulted in complete masculinization of the females' anal fin support structure normally observed during rainy sea

Embryologically mullerian duct derivatives lead to formation of female genitalia and wolffian duct derivatives to male genitalia. Presence of mullerian duct derivatives in a chromosomally normal male (XY) leads to male pseudohermaphroditism and is referred to as Persistent Mullerian Duct Syndrome (PMDS). A young male patient with bilateral cryptorchidism presented to our hospital who was subsequently imaged. There are many case reports of persistent mullerian duct syndrome but they focus mainly on surgical aspects. In this article, MRI features of persistent müllerian duct syndrome are present

The Polled Intersex Syndrome (PIS) is responsible for the absence of horns in homozygous and heterozygous goats causing a female-to-male sex reversal in the homozygous polled genotypic female (XX) goats. A simple and efficient non-invasive method was elaborated to detect the genotypic sex from hair and faecal samples using a pair of primers to amplify the X- and Y-linked alleles of the amelogenin gene. The PCR products were easily distinguishable using agarose gel electrophoresis: we detected an X-specific single band in samples originating from healthy phenotypic females and double (X- and Y-

Persistent Müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare type of male pseudohermaphroditism caused by a deficiency in anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) or a defect in its type II receptor. The current study reports the clinical data and results of the genetic analysis of a 17-month-old male diagnosed with PMDS. The clinical manifestations of the patient included a left transverse testicular ectopia and bilateral cryptorchidism. Pelvic ultrasonography indicated two testes on the same left inguinal ring and left inguinal hernia and uterine tissue located at the left rear of the bladder. Karyotype analysis
