UNLABELLED: Denys-Drash syndrome (DDS) is a rare disorder characterized by nephropathy, male pseudohermaphroditism, and wilms tumor. Cases are thought to arise sporadically through a de novo mutation in the wilms tumor suppressor gene (WT1), which encodes a zinc finger protein that not only acts as a tumor suppressor but is essential for normal gonadogenesis, nephrogenesis, and development of the urogenital tract. In this report, we describe a family with the well-known missense mutation in exon 9 of the WT1 gene, 1180C>T (R394W), causing incomplete DDS and no symptoms in their father. The pro

OBJECTIVE: To describe and present the results of the use of the inner surface or mucosa of the prepuce in vaginoplasty for ambiguous genitalia.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This technique can be used alone in low vaginal insertion or associated with a total urogenital mobilization in cases of high vagina. During the past 7 years, we have performed 18 vaginoplasties using the described technique in 46, XX DSD (female pseudohermaphroditism). All patients had 21-hydroxylase deficiency; four had the simple virilizing form and 14 had additional salt loss. The age of the patients at surgery varied from 4

17-α-hydroxylase enzyme has a crucial role in the steroid biosynthesis and, deficiency of this enzyme is an autosomal recessive monogenic disorder which is one of the two hypertensive form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. It is characterized with the deficiency in glucocorticoid, adrenal androgen, and sex steroid synthesis with concomitant mineralocorticoid excess due to genetic defect in steroid biosynthesis. The relationship of hormone system physiology with psychiatric signs and syndromes are complex. Any problem in the hypothalamo-pituitary axis may cause psychiatric syndromes. On the ot

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to evaluate the need of magnetic resonance imaging and using different approaches (transabdominal, endoluminal and transperineal) in the proper assessment of disorders of sex development regarding gonadal detection and gender differentiation.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty five patients with abnormalities of sex disorders were included. They were classified into two groups according to the time of clinical presentation: Group 1 (early onset) included eight cases. Their age ranged from one month to 12 years (mean age=3.0). They presented with overt genit

In the literature of the Roman Era, a case of macrosomia and genital ambiguity in a newborn is described. Textual evidence concerning this case of androgynism and its symbolism is provided in the present study. Medical interpretation of such cases covers the entire spectrum of differential diagnosis of macrosomia concurrent with genital ambiguity. Female pseudohermaphroditism may be excluded from the differential diagnosis, as the adrenal cortex physiology of the female fetus renders the concurrence of overgrowth and androgen excess unlikely. It will therefore have been a case of 46XY disorder

A 20-week fetus was diagnosed with tetralogy of Fallot and multicystic kidneys. The postmortem study showed missing müllerian structures with small streak ovaries, external male genitalia, and an abnormal cloacal septation (imperforate anus with a sigmoid colon opening in the bladder). As the observed anomalies were related with septation, a mechanism related with the activation of specific growth factors, we discuss the possibility of a disorder in the function of the bone morphogenetic proteins as a common cause for the widespread anomalies found in this fetus.

Persistent mullerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare form of male pseudohermaphroditism in which mullerian duct derivatives are present in an otherwise normally differentiated 46 XY male. We report a case of a 33-year-old male with PMDS operated for postchemotherapy seminoma. A diagnosis of PMDS was made on subsequent histopathological evaluation.

The authors report a case of a dysgenetic male pseudohermaphroditism with a 45,X/46,XY karyotype in a mosaic form, which was diagnosed in an infant. The one-week-old infant was evaluated because of proximal hypospadias and retention of the right testis. The results of hormonal tests were the followings: serum FSH 5.2 mU/ml; LH: 2.0 mU/ml; testosterone: 144.3 ng/dl; androstendione: 0.42 µg/l; 17-hydroxyprogesterone: 1.12 ng/ml. Chromosomal analysis revealed 45,X/46,XY karyotype. Fluorescent in vitro hybridization showed that 51% of the lymphocytes had the Y chromosome and the SRY gene. Analysis

A 7-month-old intact female German shepherd dog was presented with recurrent urinary tract infections and incontinence, ambiguous external genitalia (enlarged vulva containing a penis), and an anovestibular fistula. Anatomical structures, histopathology, and karyotyping supported a diagnosis of female pseudo-hermaphrodite, hypothesized to be a result of in utero androgenization with consequential cloacal malformation.

Hirsutism affects 5-8% of the whole female population. It results either from an increase in circulating androgen concentrations, an increase in the sensitivity of the pilosebaceous unit to normal androgen concentrations or a combination of these factors. Polycystic ovary syndrome is the underlying cause in the vast majority of patients with hirsutism; however, it should be kept in mind that it can only be diagnosed after exclusion of some other diseases such as non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia, Cushing's syndrome, hyperprolactinemia and acromegaly. The most important purpose for i

Persistent müllerian duct syndrome (PMDS) is a rare form of male pseudohermaphroditism, characterized by the presence of a uterus and fallopian tubes owing to failure of müllerian duct regression in genotypically normal males. The association between a persistent müllerian duct and transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) is even more uncommon. PMDS with TTE is a very rare pathological association, often discovered during repair for inguinal hernia or cryptorchidism. We report 3 cases of Chinese patients with PMDS associated with TTE. Hysterectomy was performed, with resection of the underdeveloped

We report a case of intra-abdominal testicular tumor in a 36-year-old married lady presenting with chief complaints of primary amenorrhea. The patient was later diagnosed with testicular feminization syndrome, a form of male pseudohermaphroditism. This testicular tumor was histologically proven as seminoma. Due to rarity, imaging findings in patients with testicular feminization syndrome and intraabdominal testicular tumor have been poorly documented. So far, only one case report had described the combined role of CT and MR imaging in intraabdominal testicular sex-cord stromal tumor. To our kn

Male pseudohermaphroditism is a sex differentiation disorder in which the gonads are testes and the genital ducts are incompletely masculinized. An 8 years old dog with normal male karyotype was referred for examination of external genitalia abnormalities. Adjacent to the vulva subcutaneous undescended testes were observed. The histology of the gonads revealed a Leydig and Sertoli cell neoplasia. The contemporaneous presence of testicular tissue, vulva, male karyotype were compatible with a male pseudohermaphrodite (MPH) condition.

CASE DESCRIPTION: 2 Standardbred racehorses that had been winning races while competing as mares underwent postrace drug testing and had serum testosterone concentrations above the acceptable limit for female racehorses.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Initial physical examinations by the referring veterinarian revealed ambiguous external genitalia and suspected intra-abdominally located testes leading to a preliminary diagnosis of male pseudohermaphroditism. Horses were referred for further evaluation of sex. Physical examination of the external genitalia confirmed the findings of the referring veterinar

Crossed testicular ectopia (CTE)/transverse testicular ectopia (TTE) is a rare but well known congenital anomaly, in which both gonads migrate toward the same hemiscrotum. It is usually associated with other abnormalities such as persistent Mullerian duct syndrome, true hermaphroditism, inguinal hernia, hypospadias, pseudohermaphroditism, and scrotal anomalies. About 100 cases of transverse testicular ectopia have been reported in published studies. We report a case of transverse testicular ectopia in an 8-month-old boy who presented with right inguinal hernia and nonpalpable left testis. On e
