Association of serum creatinine-to-albumin ratio with hyperandrogenemia and low sex hormone-binding globulin in women of reproductive age: a cross-sectional analysis of NHANES 2013-2016.

BACKGROUND: Hyperandrogenemia (HA) and low sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) are core features of polycystic ovary syndrome. The creatinine-to-albumin ratio (CAR), a simple renal-nutritional marker linked to female infertility, has not been studied in relation to HA or low SHBG. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of CAR with low SHBG and HA, defined by the free androgen index (FAI), in U.S. women of reproductive age. METHODS: In this cross-sectional analysis of NHANES 2013-2016, we included 683 women aged 18-49 years. CAR (serum creatinine/albumin) was categorized into tertiles; low SHB

Human papillomavirus awareness and prevention practices among patients with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome after neovagina reconstruction: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH) who undergo neovagina reconstruction remain at risk of Human papillomavirus infection (HPV), yet evidence regarding their awareness of HPV-related health risks and engagement in preventive behaviours is limited. This study aimed to assess HPV-related awareness, preventive practices and behavioural factors among Chinese patients with MRKH syndrome after neovagina reconstruction, and to describe HPV screening and vaccination uptake in this population. METHODS: A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted at a

Cell-resolved genetic risk reveals hyperandrogenism-associated immune and metabolic rewiring in the PMOS follicular microenvironment.

BACKGROUND: Polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) is a leading cause of anovulatory infertility. Although follicular developmental arrest is a defining feature of PMOS, the cell-type-specific mechanisms linking genetic susceptibility, endocrine imbalance and follicular microenvironmental dysfunction remain incompletely understood, particularly across clinical subtypes. METHODS: We performed single-cell RNA sequencing of preovulatory follicular-fluid cells from healthy controls and women with uncomplicated PMOS, hyperandrogenic PMOS and metformin-treated insulin-resistant PMOS. We in

Testosterone and DHEA-S Secreting Adrenal Cortical Adenoma in a Postmenopausal Woman: A Rare Functional Incidentaloma.

Postmenopausal hyperandrogenism is uncommon and should prompt evaluation for an underlying androgen-secreting source. Although ovarian causes are more frequent, adrenal tumors remain an important consideration and may occasionally be malignant. We report a 53-year-old postmenopausal woman who presented with progressive hirsutism, scalp hair loss, and mild clitoromegaly. Laboratory evaluation showed markedly elevated total testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels with suppressed gonadotropins. Pelvic ultrasonography showed no ovarian mass. CT demonstrated a 3.5 × 2.4 cm left adren

Comparison of Clinical, Metabolic, and Hormonal Profiles in Obese Versus Lean Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity substantially influences clinical and metabolic manifestations of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, differences in clinical, metabolic, and hormonal profiles between obese and lean women with PCOS have not been explored in large-scale meta-analyses. METHODS: Databases were searched from inception through 31 December 2025 for studies reporting clinical, metabolic, and hormonal profiles in obese and lean PCOS phenotypes. Random-effects meta-analyses in R yielded mean differences (MDs) or risk ratios (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Forty-two studies

Real-world river water organic pollutant mixture induces ovarian hyperandrogenism via aryl hydrocarbon receptor activation.

Humans are exposed to complex mixtures of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the real world. Most prior studies, however, focus on individual EDCs. Here, we investigated the ovarian impact of organic pollutant mixtures extracted from the Raritan River, a heavily industrialized watershed in central New Jersey, using a three-dimensional (3D) in vitro ovarian follicle culture system. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS) identified organic pollutant mixtures dominated by alkylphenols, pharmaceuticals, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances

Additive and Dose-Dependent Effects of Coenzyme Q10 Combined With Myoinositol on Insulin Resistance and Hyperandrogenism in Women With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Retrospective Controlled Study.

AIM: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism, and reproductive dysfunction. Myoinositol and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) have complementary metabolic and hormonal effects; however, the additive and dose-dependent effects of CoQ10 remain unclear. This study evaluated these effects in women with PCOS. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 200 women with PCOS were assigned to four groups: myoinositol plus CoQ10 100 mg (n = 55), myoinositol plus CoQ10 200 mg (n = 55), myoinositol alone (n = 45), and untreated controls (n = 45). Anti-Müllerian hormone as a supplementary test in women not meeting ultrasonographic polycystic ovary morphology criteria.

RESEARCH QUESTION: Is supplementary anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) testing of diagnostic value in symptomatic women who fail to meet the updated ultrasonographic (USG) polycystic ovary morphology (PCOM) criteria? DESIGN: Cross-sectional study analysing 213 women with irregular menstruation or hyperandrogenism who met the original Rotterdam PCOM criteria. Although 95 met the updated USG-PCOM criteria and were diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the remaining 118 failed to meet the updated USG criteria and served as the main analysis group. RESULTS: Among the 118 women, 75.4% (n = 8

Incorporating CRISPR Techniques with Electrochemical Sensors: From Signal-Off to Signal-On Assays.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder affecting ∼10% to 15% of reproductive-aged women worldwide. Diagnosis requires two of the following: hyperandrogenism, oligo-ovulation or anovulation, and polycystic ovaries. In addition to reproductive dysfunction, many women with PCOS display metabolic abnormalities associated with hyperandrogenism. Recent studies have reported that the gut microbiome is altered in women with PCOS and rodent models of the disorder. However, it is unknown whether the gut microbiome plays a causal role in the development and pathology of PCOS. Giv

Androgen actions in metabolic tissues in polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive disorder characterized by irregular ovulation, cyst-like follicles on the ovaries, and hyperandrogenism. PCOS is also strongly associated with increased risk of obesity and metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Hyperandrogenism independently associates with many of the metabolic symptoms observed in women with PCOS, and increased androgen signaling in the female brain is hypothesized to impair central homeostatic mechanisms controlling food intake and body weight

Progressive impact of polycystic ovary syndrome on hormonal alterations, bone microarchitecture, and mechanical properties.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by reproductive and metabolic dysfunction that may also impact bone metabolism and its structural integrity. This study aims to assess the progressive impact of PCOS on bone health over time. It focuses on how the duration of the condition influences hormonal profiles, bone metabolism, and bone's microstructural and mechanical properties in the PCOS-induced mice model. Female BALB/c mice were separated into three groups, each further subdivided into PCOS-induced and age-matched control groups. PCOS was induced by letrozole (6 mg/kg b.w.) admini

A novel CLPP variant in a Pakistani family with Perrault syndrome associated with recurrent fevers.

Perrault syndrome (PRLTS) is an autosomal recessive disease with sensorineural hearing loss and ovarian dysfunction in girls, and either a fluctuating neurological phenotype or not. PRLTS type 2 is known to be caused by pathogenic variants of the CLPP gene that encodes mitochondrial ATP-dependent protease. This paper involved clinical and genetic studies on a Pakistani family with PRLTS. Whole-exome sequencing identified a novel homozygous CLPP missense mutation (NM_006012.4: c.250 A > C; p.Ile84Leu). Its pathogenicity was assessed with the help of multiple sequence alignment, AlphaFold protei

Dihydrotanshinone as a Natural Product-Based CYP17A1 Lyase Inhibitor for Hyperandrogenic Disorders.

Selective inhibition of CYP17A1 17,20-lyase is critical for treating hyperandrogenic disorders without the cortisol-depleting side effects of non-selective drugs like abiraterone. We evaluated tanshinones from Salvia miltiorrhiza as potential selective inhibitors using biochemical assays and computational modeling. Dihydrotanshinone (DT) emerged as the superior candidate; at 10 µM, it inhibited 17,20-lyase activity by 56.6% while preserving >93% of 17α-hydroxylase activity. This yields a selectivity index of 8.67, drastically outperforming abiraterone (0.73). Furthermore, DT displayed minimal

Evaluation of muscle strength assessment in adolescent polycystic ovary syndrome: a case control study.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in adolescents characterized by irregular menstrual cycles, hyperandrogenism and metabolic disturbances. While much of the research on PCOS has focused on the hormonal and metabolic effects, the impact of PCOS on physical health, particularly muscle strength, has not been adequately studied. Previous studies suggest that hyperandrogenism may play a role in muscle strength, but the relationship between muscle function and PCOS in adolescents has not been well studied. Understanding this relationship is critical to impro
