Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome.

Birt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD) syndrome is an autosomal dominant tumour predisposition disorder caused by pathogenic variants in the folliculin (FLCN) gene. It is characterized by benign skin tumours, renal neoplasia and cystic lung disease, with a risk of spontaneous pneumothorax. Although historically considered rare, population genomic data indicate that FLCN pathogenic variants are substantially more common than expected from clinically ascertained cases, suggesting that many variant carriers are not currently recognized in clinical practice. Advances in the molecular biology of BHD syndrome have es

Co-occurrence of aortic dissection and polycystic kidney disease: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Aortic dissection is a rare and often fatal condition which arises when there is aortic wall weakening. Multiple risk factors could lead to this condition, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, connective tissue diseases such as Marfan's, Ehlers-Danlos and Loeys Dietz syndromes, as well as smoking, cocaine usage, bicuspid aortic valve, pregnancy and trauma. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a rare condition characterized by the development of multiple renal cysts, which is caused by genetic abnormalities leading to autosomal dominant or autosomal recessive inheritance. However,

Global and regional burden of measles and vaccine coverage among children under 5 years, 1990-2023: a Global Burden of Disease Study.

Measles remains a leading cause of vaccine-preventable burden among children, particularly in low-income settings. Despite decades of progress, there are indications of measles resurgence due to stagnation in vaccine coverage. Here, using the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023, we systematically assessed measles incidence, mortality, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and vaccine coverage (measles-containing vaccine 1 (MCV1) and measles-containing vaccine 2 (MCV2)) among children under 5 years of age across 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023.

A pilot study of magnetic resonance fingerprinting and radiomics analysis in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated radiomic features extracted from magnetic resonance fingerprinting (MRF)-acquired T1 and T2 quantitative maps in children and young adults with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) with normal kidney function and compared these features to those extracted from MRF images of healthy volunteers. METHODS: Mean T1 and T2 relaxation times, along with additional radiomic features, were derived from MRF T1 and T2 maps in 11 healthy volunteers and 18 patients with ADPKD. Two radiomic feature schemes were investigated to differentiate between patie

Fingerprinting the polycystic kidney: radiomics of the noncystic parenchyma for earlier ADPKD detection.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease risk stratification relies on total kidney volume, a validated marker of cyst burden and progression. Kremer et al.'s pilot study used rapid breath-hold magnetic resonance fingerprinting with radiomics to evaluate noncystic renal parenchyma in children and young adults. Quantitative T1/T2 texture features distinguished autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease from controls independently of total kidney volume, cyst fraction, age, or body size, suggesting early tissue changes. Small, cross-sectional, unmatched data require longitudinal validation

Real-world epidemiology and renal outcomes of ADPKD in Türkiye: the PKD-TURK cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Real-world epidemiological and longitudinal outcome data on autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) remain limited in underrepresented populations, including Türkiye. We aimed to characterize the epidemiology, regional distribution, and renal outcomes of ADPKD in a large multicenter national cohort. METHODS: In this retrospective multicenter study, adult patients with ADPKD were identified across tertiary nephrology centers in six regions of Türkiye (2010-2025). Study-based prevalence was calculated using Turkish Statistical Institute population data. Longitudinal r

Prenatal body fluid analysis in the evaluation of CAKUT.

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are the leading cause of chronic kidney disease in children. Although prenatal ultrasound enables early detection, its ability to predict postnatal renal outcome, particularly in bilateral cases, remains limited due to substantial phenotypic variability and the inability of imaging to capture ongoing disease processes. Genetic testing improves etiological classification but shows weak genotype-phenotype correlations and limited prognostic value, reflecting the multifactorial nature of CAKUT and prompting investigation of molecular bi

Detection of female genital tract abnormalities in antenatally detected fetal unilateral renal agenesis: Original retrospective case series with review of literature.

OBJECTIVE: In females, unilateral renal agenesis is associated with genital tract abnormalities, which can cause complications in childhood and beyond. However, its prevalence and characteristics are not consistently integrated into antenatal counselling. METHODS: An original retrospective case series study (2005-2024) at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital identified fetuses with isolated antenatally diagnosed unilateral renal agenesis from an Astraia database, with standardized 6-week postnatal imaging. RESULTS: 110 cases of renal agenesis were identified. Of these, fifteen cases (n = 15) were e

Neurological manifestations and vasculopathy in PLCG2-associated antibody deficiency and immune dysregulation (APLAID): a case series.

BACKGROUND: Autosomal dominant pathogenic variants in PLCG2 are associated with autoinflammation and PLCG2-associated antibody deficiency and immune dysregulation (APLAID), characterized by immunological abnormalities and multi-system inflammation. Descriptions of associated neurological manifestations and vascular anomalies are limited. We describe three patients with APLAID, vasculopathies, neuroinflammation, and cerebral vascular tortuosity. These cases highlight underrecognized and clinically important manifestations of APLAID. CASE PRESENTATIONS: All three patients had de novo variants i

Atypical Renal Hypoplasia in HNF1B-Related Disease: The Clinical Impact of Early Genetic Diagnosis.

Background: Genetic testing is an increasingly important component in the diagnostic evaluation of kidney diseases. Pathogenic variants in the HNF1B gene cause a disorder classically known as renal cysts and diabetes (RCAD) syndrome, typically characterised by bilateral renal cysts, diabetes mellitus, and a broad spectrum of other extrarenal abnormalities. However, non-cystic presentations often lead to diagnostic delays. Case Report: We report the case of a 28-year-old woman evaluated for chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology who presented with atypical radiological findings. Imaging re

Chagas disease across pregnancy and early infancy: Leukoencephalomalacia and achondroplasia in two unusual cases.

BACKGROUND: Congenital Chagas disease remains an underdiagnosed cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in endemic regions. Although most infected neonates are asymptomatic or present with nonspecific findings, severe and atypical manifestations involving the central nervous system or coexistence with genetic disorders are rarely reported. The full spectrum of neurologic injury and potential interactions between Trypanosoma cruzi infection and fetal developmental conditions remain poorly characterized. CASES: We report two unusual clinical presentations of T. cruzi infection during early in

Renal Cyst Rupture Mimicking Grade V Renal Trauma After Blunt Injury: A Case Report Highlighting the Risk of Radiologic Overstaging.

Blunt renal trauma is commonly assessed using contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT), which guides management decisions based on injury grading. However, pre-existing renal pathology may confound imaging interpretation and lead to an overestimation of injury severity. We report the case of a previously healthy 26-year-old male patient presenting with flank pain and hematuria after blunt abdominal trauma during a soccer (football) match. Contrast-enhanced CT demonstrated findings suggestive of American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST) grade V renal injury, including apparent par

Simple renal cysts are associated with ischemic stroke in young adults: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of ischemic stroke among young patients is increasing, and ischemic stroke has become a major cause of death and disability in young adults. The key to alleviating this problem is to identify the risk factors and causes of stroke to optimize treatment. The current study aims to assess whether simple renal cysts are associated with the occurrence of ischemic stroke among young adults. METHODS: Data from patients with acute ischemic stroke aged 18-50 years and age- and sex-matched controls who underwent medical examinations at the Affiliated Changsha Central Hospital,

Hypomagnesemia in Hypoparathyroidism, Sensorineural Deafness, and Renal Dysplasia Syndrome Caused by Pathogenic Variants of GATA3.

BACKGROUND: Heterozygous pathogenic variants in the transcription factor GATA binding protein 3 (GATA3) cause hypoparathyroidism, sensorineural deafness and renal dysplasia (HDR) syndrome, also known as Barakat syndrome. Although not typically associated with the disease, hypomagnesemia has been reported. We aimed to determine its prevalence in HDR syndrome and explore how GATA3 impacts magnesium balance. METHODS: Retrospective clinical and laboratory data from 66 patients with GATA3 variants were collected via European Rare Kidney Diseases Reference Network (ERKNet) and European Reference Ne

Comprehensive Imaging Review of the Ureter.

The ureter is an important conduit between the kidney and the bladder and is frequently imaged to rule out cancer in the upper genitourinary tract. However, while malignancy can occur, a spectrum of other pathologic ureteral findings can exist, and these can be divided into congenital, intrinsic, and extrinsic abnormalities that range from postoperative and neoplastic conditions to inflammatory disease. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the ureter, including the ureteral anatomy, ureteral imaging strategies, and various ureteral conditions and their associated imaging features.

Contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography - urodynamics in patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction: a pilot study within pediatric urological practice.

BACKGROUND: The progressive loss of kidney function is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children with neurogenic bladder dysfunction. A consequent follow-up, including repeated urodynamics combined with detection of vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is crucial for the individual treatment of the urinary tract. The aim of our study is to investigate whether contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography -urodynamics (ceVUS-UD) can be used in routine urological diagnostics. Due to its radiation-free nature in a more comfortable environment, this would allow the examination to be performed frequent

Case Report: Giant congenital hydronephrosis presenting as massive retroperitoneal cystic lesion with literature review.

Giant retroperitoneal cystic lesions encompass multiple differential diagnoses including renal cysts, lymphangiomas and congenital hydronephrosis. Congenital giant hydronephrosis is extremely rare in adult patients, with limited clinical data to guide preoperative differentiation and surgical management. We report a unique case of a 60-year-old male with a 10-year history of progressive giant left retroperitoneal cystic mass, accompanied by left abdominal distending pain. Preoperative contrast-enhanced ultrasound and CT demonstrated severe left hydronephrosis with markedly atrophic renal corte
