A case of simultaneous uterine and renal cell carcinoma in an elderly woman who had a septate vagina, double cervix, uterus didelphys, and a single kidney secondary to contralateral renal agenesis is reported. She was treated for a period of 8 months, first with pelvic irradiation followed by total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and subsequently with heminephrectomy. Her renal function was normal postoperatively. The patient died of congestive heart failure in June 1990 after being free of carcinoma for approximately 18 years. The authors believe that this is the on

Report on a female infant with iris coloboma on the right and microphthalmia/orbital cyst on the left, single nostril, radial defectis, abnormal lung lobation, congenital heart defect, hypoplastic spleen, absent gallbladder, microgastria, unilateral renal aplasia, arhinencephaly and fused thalami. This case represents an unusually severe expression of a probably rare association recently reviewed by Lueder et al. (1989).

Acquired renal cystic disease (ARCD) is defined as the development of multiple cysts in the renal cortex and medulla in patients with chronic renal failure who are free from congenital polycystic kidney disease. ARCD develops generally in contracted kidneys. We report a case of grotesque enlargement of a single kidney in a patient who had been receiving hemodialysis for 18 years. Although the exact causes of ARCD are not known, 3 factors may contribute to the development of nephromegaly; the sex, the duration of hemodialysis and previous unilateral nephrectomy. As in polycystic disease, when t

The authors report twenty two cases of obstructive anuria observed in children. Causes are diverse: 6 cases were observed during the course of tumors, 4 cases were secondary to bilateral renal stones (or unilateral in a single kidney), 3 cases were observed before surgical correction of latent or well tolerated congenital uropathy, and 9 cases in the immediate postoperative period (including 8 after antireflux surgery). In the emergency situation, treatment of obstructive anuria is based on urinary diversion ideally by percutaneous nephrostomy under ultrasonic control. But prevention is the be

A family with clear evidence of concomitant congenital hepatic fibrosis, polycystic liver and adult-type polycystic kidney is reported. The autosomal dominant inheritance of polycystic kidney in association with either liver cyst or hepatic fibrosis in this family suggests that various combinations of hepatic and renal fibrocystic lesions are possible to occur. Additionally, in the proband a very rare association of congenital hepatic fibrosis and cerebral aneurysm was present.

Kidneys of patients with advanced renal insufficiency undergo polycystic transformation, described as acquired cystic degeneration (ACD). In 118 chronic dialysis patients clinical data were compared with sonographic findings of their 221 cirrhotic kidneys: 74 (63%) patients showed distinctly discernible renal cysts: 19 patients hat one single cyst, nine patients had two to eight cysts, 46 patients had more than eight cysts. Accordingly 39% of patients had ACD. Cystic transformation was of the same degree on both sides and in a few cases so marked that a formal discrimination to congenital cyst

Renal cysts are relatively common. They may be single, multiple, or innumerable, cortical or medullary. Most renal cysts are spherical, thin-walled, epithelial-lined structures that contain fluid with features of a plasma ultrafiltrate. A clinically useful classification must include characteristics such as age of onset, family history and association with extrarenal lesions, as well as morphologic parameters. Renal dysplasia is disturbed renal histogenesis, either syndromic or non-syndromic, which usually gives rise to morphologically characteristic renal cysts. Two important and distinctive

Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC) in a single kidney is a rare occurrence, more so when it concerns agenesis of the kidney. Chemotherapy of metastatic renal cell carcinoma has a poor effect. We report a case of a man, 49 years of age, with agenesis of one kidney, admitted with a metastatic RCC of his only kidney. Survival of 15 months duration was achieved by therapy combining Provera, Vinblastine and Alpha-C-Recombinant Interferon.

Renal cysts are a relatively common but heterogeneous group of disorders that are increasingly being diagnosed prenatally. Prognosis depends on the type of cystic disease, extent of involvement, and the presence or absence of other anomalies. Czeizel (American Journal of Medical Genetics [Supplement] 2:17-21, 1986) indicated that a cystic kidney-cardiovascular malformation association exists. To investigate this further a population based study of renal cysts and associated anomalies in Manitoba children born between 1979 and 1983 was carried out. A total of 46 children with renal cysts were i

We have studied an unusual, spontaneous, intradural extramedullary spinal cord tumor in 12 dogs. Animals presented with paraparesis and ataxia early in life (11/12 ranged from 6 to 38 months of age) suggesting that these tumors may be congenital. Various breeds of dogs were represented with four cases in German Shepherds and three in retrievers; there was no sex predisposition. Post-mortem examinations revealed a single intradural mass consistently located between T10 and L2, which produced extensive compression of the spinal cord. Metastasis was never observed and significant pathological cha

Compensatory growth in 27 undiseased congenital solitary kidneys and in 31 solitary kidneys in patients with Wilms tumour was monitored in long-term follow-up studies by ultrasound volume biometry. In congenital solitary kidneys hypertrophy was not detectable at the time of birth. Parenchymal mass increase achieved 188% of the volume of a healthy kidney within at least 4 years of life and afterwards paralleled the physiological growth documented in healthy kidney pairs. Disease-free kidneys in Wilms tumour patients all developed a similar 180% volume augmentation within 2-4 years after nephrec

We have seen 21 patients with unilateral congenital giant megaureter. Age ranged from 2 months to 8 years. This condition is characterized by giant focal segmental ureteral dilatation producing an elongated and distorted ureter; distally there may be congenital ureteral stenosis or atresia, or a ureter of approximately normal caliber. They usually have a dysplastic and disorganized muscular coat, lined with a columnar epithelial mucosa rather than the usual transitional epithelium. The associated kidney or moiety was hypoplastic, dysplastic, or the site of comparatively mild hydronephrosis ass

Two sisters had developmental retardation and congenital hepatic fibrosis. One, 23 years old, had facial anomalies reminiscent of Smith-Lemli-Opitz syndrome, ocular coloboma, and hypoplastic kidneys with a single cyst. The other sister died at 18 months and had an encephalocele and cystically dilated collecting ducts in the renal medulla. Although the manifestations in these two sisters are similar to the Smith-Lemli-Opitz and Meckel syndromes respectively, there are sufficient differences to suggest that they had a separate autosomal recessive MCA-MR syndrome.

Body measurements were taken and the prevalence of major malformations and of 57 minor anomalies was determined in 106 children with malignant disease, in 81 of their sibs, and in 106 control subjects matched to the patients according to sex, age and ethnic origin. Leukaemic children had a significantly smaller head circumference than the corresponding control children, but no significant differences in height, weight, anthropometric and syndromologic indices were found. No differences were observed in the frequency of associated major malformations including renal malformations detectable by

The renal lesion of congenital hepatic fibrosis (CHF = Blyth and Ockenden's juvenile polycystic disease of liver and kidneys) was analyzed from 6 specimens from patients aged 3 3/12 to 19 3/12 years and compared with that of 5 patients with infantile polycystic disease (IPCD) aged 6 months to 14 4/12 years. Pathologic, microdissection, injection, and morphometric studies show that the predominantly medullary cystic lesion of CHF shows different distribution in medullary, cortico-medullary, and cortical zones of kidney from the lesion of IPCD, and shows a different time course, from early life

Nine cases of congenital hemihypertrophy of an entire half of the body ("true" hemihypertrophy) were investigated in relation to literature data. The left side was more often affected (7:2) and the abnormality was more frequent in females (5:4). Associated abnormalities were present in all cases: a single abnormality in 3 cases (mental retardation, iris heterochromia and, respectively, left foot gigantism) and 3 to 13 abnormalities in the other 6 cases. Prominent hemiface, asymmetric macroglossia on the affected side, unequally developed breasts, unilateral gigantism of the foot, iris heteroch

Eight cases of acquired cystic disease of the kidney (ACDK) associated with chronic renal failure and hemodialysis are described. No patient had a family history or clinical evidence of congenital adult polycystic kidney disease (CAPKD). Glomerulonephritis was the cause of renal failure in 6, and pyelonephritis in 2. Massive renal and perirenal hemorrhage necessitated 3 nephrectomies in 2 patients. Single kidney weights did not exceed 280 Gm., a major feature in the distinction of ACDK from CAPKD. Morphologically, in addition to the usual stigmata of end-stage kidneys, 40 to 80 per cent of the

A case of polycystic renal disease of the adult associated to dissecting aneurysm of the ascending aorta with histological findings compatible with Marfan's syndrome is reported. A review of the literature discloses only one case of this association, although without cardiovascular abnormalities. Polycystic renal disease of the adult is associated with some frequency to aneurysms of the cerebral arteries and, occasionally, to aneurysms of systemic arteries (splenic and renal). On the other hand, the Marfan's syndrome presents the well known dysmorphic manifestations associated to cystic degene

Of 220 consecutive primary renal tumors of childhood, 17 contained substantial amounts of histologically identifiable striated muscle cells (over 10% of sampled tumor parenchyma). These tumors could be further subclassified into two groups: Wilms' tumors with "massive" rhabdomyogenesis (one-third or more of the tumor parenchyma composed of muscle), and Wilms' tumors with "moderate" rhabdomyogenesis (10-30% muscle composition. The former tumors were invariably seen in young children, under 4 years of age; often the patients were infants 1 year of age, or younger, and more than half of the patie
