OBJECTIVE: To carry out clinical and genetic analysis for a fetus with absent kidneys and bladder.
METHODS: Clinical data of the fetus were collected. Whole exome sequencing (WES) and Sanger sequencing were carried out on fetal tissue and peripheral blood samples from its family members. A RDDC online tool was used to predict the impact of the variant on the GREB1L gene splicing, which was further validated by in vitro minigene assays. Long-range PCR was employed to verify the exonic deletional variant. An I-TASSER server was used to predict the three-dimensional structure of the mutant prote

Sirenomelia is an extremely rare and almost invariably lethal congenital malformation characterized by variable fusion of the lower limbs and severe associated visceral anomalies. We report a case prenatally diagnosed at 20 weeks of gestation in a 25-year-old nondiabetic, nonconsanguineous woman referred for suspected polymalformative fetal syndrome. Prenatal ultrasound demonstrated severe oligohydramnios, bilateral small hyperechoic kidneys suggestive of renal dysplasia, fused lower limbs, absent external genitalia, and a single umbilical artery, findings strongly supporting the diagnosis of

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Up to 50% of children with urinary tract infections (UTIs) have vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). Severe VUR can lead to reflux nephropathy (RN) and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). In 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics UTI guidelines suggested selective voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG), departing from previous recommendations to obtain VCUG after all febrile UTIs in children aged less than 2 years. It is unknown whether the subsequent decrease in VCUG has led to increased preventable kidney damage. This study's objective is to evaluate recent trends in the US incide

Oblique vaginal septum syndrome (Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome) is a congenital reproductive tract malformation frequently accompanied by ipsilateral renal dysplasia. During infancy, it can lead to urinary tract infections, dysuria, and abdominal masses. Delayed intervention predisposes patients to hydronephrosis and even renal failure. Current treatment primarily involves incision and drainage; however, traditional transvaginal surgery in infants is limited by a restricted surgical field and a lack of standardized protocols. This case report presents the clinical data of three affected in

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review will evaluate the costs and cost-effectiveness of robot-assisted pyeloplasty and laparoscopic pyeloplasty in patients with pelviureteric junction obstruction.
INTRODUCTION: Pelviureteric junction obstruction is the most common congenital abnormality of the urinary tract, affecting approximately 1 in every 1500 live births. Pyeloplasty is the standard treatment, with approaches including open, laparoscopic, and robot-assisted techniques. Although robotics offers advantages such as enhanced precision, concerns remain regarding its cost and cost-effectiveness co

PURPOSE: To compare the outcomes of Laparoscopic pyeloplasty (LP) with those of Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic pyeloplasty (RALP) in infants.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of anteroposterior diameter, split renal function success rate, reoperation rate, and complication rate was done.
RESULTS: A total of thirty-nine patients and 42 units of kidneys underwent LP, while thirteen patients and 14 units underwent RALP. There was a significant improvement in APD and SRF in both groups. However, the percentage changes in APD and SRF were not significantly different in the LP and RALP groups. The m

Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly syndrome was first identified by Purslow in 1922 as a result of abnormal embryologic development of the Müllerian (paramesonephric) and Wolffian (mesonephric) ducts. The syndrome typically presents with cyclical lower abdominal pain and abnormal vaginal discharge in postpubertal females. Although the optimal timing and method of surgical treatment remain unclear, resection of the vaginal septum is commonly performed. This article presents 4 previously asymptomatic patients who developed an acute abdomen after menarche and were treated with hy

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) associated with neural tube defects is exceedingly rare. We report a female neonate (2550 g) born at 35 weeks (Apgar 2/4/5) with severe left-sided Bochdalek CDH, lumbosacral myelomeningocele, Chiari II malformation, and unilateral renal dysplasia. Maternal history revealed no folic acid supplementation. Despite intensive care and inhaled nitric oxide for persistent pulmonary hypertension, the patient died at 72 h. This case highlights the value of prenatal ultrasound in detecting multisystem anomalies and supports the concept of early embryologic mesoderma

BACKGROUND: Coexistent pelviureteric junction obstruction (PUJO) and vesicoureteric junction obstruction (VUJO) is uncommon and presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic dilemma. We conducted a narrative review to synthesize contemporary evidence in management.
METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases was performed for English-language studies (2000-2024) reporting paediatric cohorts with concurrent PUJO and VUJO. Two reviewers independently screened records and extracted data regarding diagnostic strategies, initial interventions and the requirement for

Background/Objectives: Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a rare autosomal recessive ciliopathy caused by variants in genes encoding components of the BBSome complex. Interpretation of rare variants in the BBS7 gene remains challenging, particularly for variants of uncertain significance. This study aimed to provide clinical and molecular genetic characterization of two siblings with a BBS phenotype harboring compound heterozygous variants in BBS7, including a previously undescribed missense variant. Methods: Two siblings (aged 11 and 8 years) presenting with obesity, postaxial polydactyly, retina

Urinary bladder agenesis is an extraordinarily rare congenital anomaly, often associated with complex genitourinary malformations and poses significant diagnostic challenges in infancy. We report an infant girl with progressive abdominal distension, continuous urinary dribbling and bilateral hydronephrosis, ultimately found to have bladder agenesis with bilateral pelviureteric junction obstruction, ectopic ureteric insertion into the vagina and malrotated kidneys. Multimodality imaging, including ultrasonography, radionuclide diuretic renography with single-photon emission CT/CT and contrast-e

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Increasing degrees of abnormal ureteral bud embryogenesis may result in increased vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) and renal dysplasia and decreased spontaneous VUR resolution. Renal ultrasound (US) measurements may be predictive of early clinical outcomes in children with VUR. The hypothesis is that increased renal parenchymal thickness (ParT) or medullary pyramidal thickness (PT) are associated with decreased grades of VUR and increased rates of spontaneous resolution.
METHODS: Medical records and imaging of 202 children ≤2 years of age (median age [IQR] 0.37 [0.12-1

BACKGROUND: The characteristics of postobstructive diuresis (POD) following relief of unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO) has been studied in animals, but there is scarcity of literature on translation of these findings in human pediatric patients with unilateral pelviureteric junction obstruction (PUJO) following pyeloplasty.
OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to assess the biochemical characteristics of the POD from the operated kidney. Our secondary objective was it's clinical implications and identifying predisposing factors.
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective observational study was conduc

Posterior urethral valves (PUV) are rare congenital malformations affecting both the upper and lower urinary tract and can lead to severe long-term complications. Thanks to advances in prenatal diagnostics, neonatal care, and pediatric urological-nephrological management, an increasing number of patients now reach adulthood. Long-term outcomes are primarily determined by the extent of prenatal renal dysplasia as well as the early recognition and targeted management of bladder dysfunction. Care of adult PUV patients remains challenging, as many adult urologists have limited experience and evide

A five-week-old female B6.129S4-C3tm1Crr/J (C3 knockout) mouse presented with abdominal distension and reduced general condition. The animal was euthanized and submitted for necropsy. Gross examination revealed marked dilation of the left kidney and ureter, both containing clear fluid consistent with urine and a focal rupture of the renal capsule with associated uroabdomen. Histopathological evaluation revealed multicystic renal dysplasia characterized by immature glomeruli, primitive tubules, persistent mesenchyme, and dilated collecting ducts, accompanied by a tortuous and dilated ureter. BACKGROUND: Posterior urethral valves (PUV) represent the most common cause of lower urinary tract obstruction in male infants and are a leading contributor to chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize and quantify the available evidence regarding the risk of long-term CKD in children with posterior urethral valves and to identify factors associated with adverse renal outcomes.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines. PubMed, Embase, Web of Science were searched fr

Aphallia, or penile agenesis, is an extremely rare congenital anomaly with fewer than 100 cases reported worldwide. It results from failed development of the genital tubercle during early embryogenesis, leading to complete absence of penile structures and abnormal urethral opening. This defect is often part of a broader caudal developmental disturbance and is frequently associated with genitourinary anomalies such as urethrorectal fistula, renal agenesis, renal dysplasia, hydronephrosis, and cryptorchidism, all of which significantly influence prognosis. Diagnosis requires careful differentiat
