Congenital urinary tract anomalies are a variable finding associated with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder classically associated with multiple basal cell carcinomas, odontogenic keratocysts and skeletal anomalies. However, its significant phenotypic heterogeneity often delays the diagnosis. Here, we undertake the first comprehensive characterisation of NBCCS and congenital urinary tract anomalies. METHODS: Clinical evaluation followed by genetic testing was performed on a proband with congenital hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic obstruction. Then, a cohort of patients with molecularly confirmed NBCC

Novel modality using computational fluid dynamics to estimate renal pelvic pressure and evaluate severity of obstruction in congenital hydronephrosis.

BACKGROUND: Congenital hydronephrosis involves obstruction of the ureteropelvic junction, which impairs urine passage and elevates renal pelvic pressure. Elevated renal pelvic pressure detrimentally affects renal function. Pyeloplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to prevent deterioration of renal function. The Whitaker test, which is conducted using nephrostomy, is used to measure renal pelvic pressure. However, this method is highly invasive, highlighting the need for alternative testing approaches. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) provides quantitative predictions of fluid flow phenom

Increasing thickness of the renal medullary pyramid following intervention in children with posterior urethral valves.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior urethral valves (PUV) are a leading cause of pediatric chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. Existing prognostic tools like postoperative nadir serum creatinine are delayed in availability, prompting investigation into earlier indicators of renal prognosis. Renal pyramidal thickness (PT) has emerged as a promising ultrasonographic measure in congenital hydronephrosis, but its prognostic value in PUV is poorly defined. OBJECTIVE: To characterize PT and renal parenchymal thickness (ParT) before and after surgical intervention for PUV and to evaluate the rel

Spectrum of congenital anomalies detected through anatomy ultrasound at a referral hospital in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Africa has a high burden of congenital anomalies due in part to limited preconception care, infections, and environmental exposures. However, the true prevalence of congenital anomalies is unclear because of insufficient access to prenatal diagnostic services. We aimed to determine the rate of congenital anomalies, and characterize the anomalies detected prenatally at a referral hospital in Ghana. METHODS: We performed a four-year retrospective review of all fetal anomaly ultrasounds performed and congenital anomalies detected from January 1st, 2020, to December 31st, 2023, at Kor

Novel multifunctional targeted nanozyme as an ultrasound contrast agent for real-time monitoring and treatment of congenital hydronephrosis renal fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Congenital Hydronephrosis (CH) is a common pediatric disorder that often leads to renal fibrosis (RF), significantly impairing kidney function. Oxidative stress (OS) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of RF. Current treatments lack effective monitoring and targeted therapies for CH, thus highlighting the need for innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. This study explores a novel multifunctional nanozyme, pH-responsive PEG-SH and imidazole-modified gold nanoparticles (PMIZ-AuNPs), for both real-time ultrasound monitoring and treatment of CH-induced RF. RESULTS: We

Morbidity in children with major kidney anomalies: a European population-based study.

UNLABELLED: Knowledge about the prognosis for children born with congenital anomalies is important for counselling parents after a prenatal diagnosis. Nine population-based European Congenital Anomaly registries provided data on all children born 1995-2014 diagnosed with congenital hydronephrosis, multicystic kidney disease (MCKD), or posterior urethral valves (PUV) and on reference children from the same populations. Data up to 2015 on prescriptions, hospital diagnosis, and surgical procedures up to the 10th birthday were obtained by linkage to prescription and hospital databases. The study i

Is There Any Possible Relationship Between Antenatal Hydronephrosis and Prenatal Androgen Exposure? An Analysis Using the 2D:4D Digit Ratio.

OBJECTIVES: The ratio of the index finger to the ring finger length (2D:4D) differs between sexes; it is typically higher in females than in males. This difference is thought to be related to intrauterine androgen exposure. Antenatal hydronephrosis is the most frequently detected anomaly during prenatal ultrasonographic evaluation of fetal development. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the 2D:4D ratio in newborns and the presence of congenital hydronephrosis. METHODS: Between July 2023 and April 2024, the lengths of the second and fourth digits and medical birth records

Deep Learning Algorithms to Predict Differential Renal Function <40% in Unilateral Hydronephrosis Based on Key Parameters of Urinary Tract Ultrasound.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the correlation between ultrasound findings and the incidence of differential renal function (DRF) <40%, we conducted an analysis of the key parameters of urinary tract ultrasound in children with unilateral hydronephrosis. For children with unilateral hydronephrosis, DRF <40% serves as a compelling indication for surgical intervention, and it can be assessed through diuretic renogram. However, a significant number of patients do not have convenient access to high-quality renograms. So we conducted this analysis aiming to identifying value of urinary tract ultrasound in

Association between NDUFS1 from urinary extracellular vesicles and decreased differential renal function in children with ureteropelvic junction obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is the most common cause of pediatric congenital hydronephrosis, and continuous kidney function monitoring plays a role in guiding the treatment of UPJO. In this study, we aimed to explore the differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in the urinary extracellular vesicles(uEVs) of children with UPJO and determine potential biomarkers of uEVs proteins that reflect kidney function changes. METHODS: Preoperative urine samples from 6 unilateral UPJO patients were collected and divided into two groups: differential renal function (DRF) ≥ 40% and

A case of hydronephrosis due to intrarenal ureteral obstruction in a Japanese Black calf.

A 23-day-old Japanese Black female calf presented with distension of the lower abdomen. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a cystic structure with fluid accumulation and moderate echoluminance in the right abdominal cavity. Ultrasonography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed congenital hydronephrosis due to narrowing of the intrarenal ureter, and right kidney resection was performed. Blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels, which were within reference values preoperatively, peaked on the third postoperative day and gradually decreased afterward until reaching preoperativ

Successful Laparoscopic Hepaticojejunostomy for Infant Congenital Biliary Dilatation with both Aberrant Right Hepatic Artery and Bile Duct from the Caudate Region.

A boy with congenital hydronephrosis underwent ultrasonography every month for follow-up. At 4 months of age, ultrasonography incidentally revealed congenital biliary dilatation (5-cm type Ia). We performed laparoscopic extrahepatic bile duct resection and hepaticojejunostomy. After dissecting the dilated common bile duct (CBD), we found that the arcading-like shaped right hepatic artery (RHA) coursed in front of the CBD. Additionally, a tiny duct was identified below the main hepatic duct. At first, we thought it was a lymphatic vessel and dissected it from the main hepatic duct. However, bil
