UNLABELLED: Primary non-refluxing megaureter (PMU) is a congenital dilation of the ureter which is not related to vesicoureteral reflux, duplicated collecting systems, ureterocele, ectopic ureter, or posterior urethral valves and accounts for 5 to 10% of all prenatal hydronephrosis (HN) cases. The etiology is a dysfunction or stenosis of the distal ureter. Most often PMU remains asymptomatic with spontaneous resolution allowing for non-operative management. Nevertheless, in selective cases such as the development of febrile urinary tract infections, worsening of the ureteral dilatation, or red

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare 'L' (Langerhans) group histiocytic neoplasm that affects a multitude of organ systems, causing osteosclerotic bone lesions, periaortic encasement ('coated' aorta), retroperitoneal fibrosis involving kidneys and ureters ('hairy kidney'), and infiltration of the central nervous system. Cardiovascular involvement can occur in up to 70% of patients and is usually found during computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging evaluation. When present, cardiovascular symptoms can have wide variability in presentation from asymptomatic to pericarditis, fatal cardi

A 6-year-old neutered male giant schnauzer dog was presented to an emergency clinic with stranguria and pollakiuria. On physical examination, the abdomen was generally and non-painfully distended. Diagnostic imaging revealed several large, anechoic, fluid-filled, space-occupying lesions from the cranial to caudal abdomen placing extramural pressure on the bladder and urethra and apparently causing the clinical signs. Unilateral ureteral atresia with secondary ipsilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter were diagnosed on post-mortem examination. Due to a lack of history of abdominal surgery or t

Williams syndrome (WS), also known as Williams-Beuren syndrome, is a rare genetic disorder characterized by infantile hypercalcemia, short stature, a varying degree of mental retardation, elfin-like facial features, and cardiovascular abnormalities, including systemic hypertension, aortic hypoplasia, coarctation of the aorta, and valvular heart disease (aortic and pulmonic stenosis, mitral valve prolapsed or bicuspid aortic valve). It is also characterized by friendly and outgoing personality. The majority of WS cases are sporadic, while few are familial. Both sporadic and familial cases are d

BACKGROUND: Duplex kidneys are one of the most common renal congenital abnormalities, mostly asymptomatic and of no clinical significance. There are little reports about the left ureterocele and stone of calyceal diverticulum in patients with bilateral incomplete duplex kidneys managed by flexible ureteroscopy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old Chinese woman was presented with left waist pain for 1 month. A preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan and intravenous pyelogram revealed the left ureterocele which located in the left ureterovesical junction, and stone of calyceal diverticulum whic

Congenital mid ureteric valve (MUV) stenosis is a very rare cause of ureteric obstruction and hydronephrosis (HN) in children. We describe how we manage laparoscopically one case of a patient with congenital MUV. We describe a 6-month-old boy born with antenatal left HN, with an anteroposterior diameter (APD) of 1,5 cm. Follow-up renal ultrasound at 3 months of age showed an increase in left kidney HN, approximately 2.5 cm below the PUJ associated with distal stenosis. Renal scintigraphy with DTPA showed an obstructive pattern. Urography scan showed an abrupt reduction in the caliber of the mi

Fetal lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) is classically based on prenatal ultrasound identification of a dilated/ thick-walled bladder, bilateral hydronephrosis, dilated ureters and a dilated posterior urethra (also known as the "keyhole sign") in a male fetus. Although the most common underlying diagnosis is posterior urethral valves, the prenatal appearance may be similar with urethral atresia or stenosis, the Prune-Belly Syndrome, or even a cloacal anomaly in a female. These conditions form part of the Congenital Anomalies of Kidney and Urinary Tract (CAKUT) spectrum, which is the commo

Supernumerary kidney is an accessory kidney with its own vasculature, collecting-system and encapsulated parenchyma with about 100 cases reported in the literature. However, there is no report of supernumerary kidney associated with horseshoe malformation with ureteric stricture. We report a rare case of 20 months old female admitted with left-sided abdomen lump and mild abdominal pain. During surgery, supernumerary kidney with horseshoe component with grossly-dilated left-sided pelvicalyceal system and proximal 1-cm of left-ureter, distal to which whole of left-ureter was noncanalized, was se

A pelvic kidney occurs in between 1 in 2200 and 1 in 3000 people,1 due to failure of ascent during development. It is commonly asymptomatic and usually functions normally. Pelvic ureteral junction obstruction can either be congenital or acquired, and is characterized by intrinsic stenosis or extrinsic compression of the ureter at the junction with the pelvicalyceal renal system. This can cause symptomatic or asymptomatic hydronephrosis. We describe the complex case and management of a patient with a massive pelvic ureteral junction obstruction in a pelvic kidney.

BACKGROUND: There are often questions about the impact of exposures on a range of birth defects, but there are few rigorous approaches for evaluating these associations. Using maternal smoking as an example we applied a phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) approach to evaluate the impact of this exposure on a comprehensive range of birth defects.
METHODS: Cases were obtained from the Texas Birth Defects Registry for the period 1999-2015. A total of 127 birth defects were examined. Maternal smoking at any time during the pregnancy was ascertained from the vital record. Data were randomly di

The combination of pediatric multivisceral and kidney transplantation leads to additional recipient risks due to the number of anastomoses and to the small sizes of donor structures. The inclusion of donor kidneys, ureters, and a bladder patch en bloc with multivisceral organs decreases the number and complexity of anastomoses and has not yet been reported. Four patients were transplanted in this fashion; three underwent multivisceral-kidney and one underwent liver-kidney transplantation. The first patient was a 3-year-old male with polycystic kidney disease and congenital hepatic fibrosis. Th

Dilatations of the urinary tract are discovered in increasing numbers in intrauterine or postnatal sonographic screening examinations. Only few urinary tract anomalies (e. g. urethral valves) require immediate therapy; however, ureteropelvic stenosis and primary megaureter in particular require a prognostic classification between relevant obstructions needing correction and dilations which do not affect renal function. Ultrasound, diuresis scintigraphy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remain the main pillars of advanced diagnostics despite an increasing number of biomarkers. The prevention

INTRODUCTION: Prune belly syndrome (PBS) presents with both renal dysplasia and urinary tract abnormalities. When performing kidney transplantation in PBS patients with kidney failure, extensive pretransplant urinary tract preparation may be necessary.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of a 36-year-old man with PBS who underwent living-related kidney transplantation with urinary diversion using the Mitrofanoff principle. The patient had a bilateral loop ureterostomy for a urethral obstruction. Cystourethrography before the operation showed tortuous and dilated ureters with vesicoureter

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect and safety of modifying a threading cannula needle-assisted suspension fixation in retroperitoneal laparoscopic dismembered pyeloplasty (LDP) for children with congenital ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO).
METHODS: Between December 2012 and December 2017, 45 children (< 14 years of age) with congenital UPJO were divided into two groups. In Group A, children underwent conventional "no-suspension fixation" LDP; and in Group B, "4-point suspension fixation" LDP was performed to lower difficulties and shorten operative time. The perioperative clinical data
