Mutation screening of BMP4 and Id2 genes in Chinese patients with congenital ureteropelvic junction obstruction.

UNLABELLED: Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) is the most common congenital anomaly of the urinary tract. Evidence has shown that BMP4 and Id2 play crucial roles in nephrogenesis, alterations of which may cause ureteral developmental anomalies. Here, we directly sequenced the coding sequences in BMP4 and Id2 genes of 108 unrelated Chinese patients with ureteropelvic junction stenosis. One missense mutation c.485G> A (p.R162Q) in BMP4 and two synonymous mutations (c.1167T> C in BMP4 and c.108A> G in Id2) were detected in three cases. None of these variations were present in the 150 norm

Etio-pathogenic and morphological correlations in congenital hydronephrosis.

Hydronephrosis, "distension in varying degrees of pelvis and calyces, accompanied by progressive atrophy of renal parenchyma due to obstruction in urinary flow", is an apparently simple reno-urinary disease, but, in reality, by association of its own characters with those conferred by causative lesions, becomes of a significant complexity. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the plurivalent character of this entity on a batch of cases with congenital hydronephrosis, by identification of lesional features correlated with cause of disease. The etiology of hydronephrosis in analyzed cases

Mapping candidate regions and genes for congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT) by array-based comparative genomic hybridization.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT) are frequently associated with malformations of other organs. METHODS: In order to explore the role of DNA microimbalances in syndromal CAKUT, we applied genome-wide array-based comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH) in 30 children with various CAKUT phenotypes and at least one additional extrarenal symptom. RESULTS: In three patients, causal imbalances were detected: In one patient with duplex kidney and vesico-ureteral reflux associated with extrarenal stigmata, a terminal 9.52 Mb gain in chromosomal band 2q37

Nondismembered ureteroplasty for congenital midureteral stenosis: a new application of an old technique.

OBJECTIVES: To share our experience with nondismembered ureteroplasty (NDU), a novel application of an old technique in congenital midureteral stenosis (CMS). METHODS: A 35-year-old man was diagnosed as a case of CMS, a rare benign condition on the basis of extensive evaluation, including ultrasonography, intravenous urography, ethylenedicystine renal scan, antegrade and retrograde contrast study of the left kidney and ureter, and a 64-slice computed tomographic angiography of the abdomen with 3-dimensional reconstruction. He was managed by open NDU, where a longitudinal incision over the nar

Bilateral congenital midureteric strictures associated with multicystic dysplastic kidney and hydronephrosis: evaluation with MR urography.

We report a case of bilateral congenital midureteric strictures diagnosed using MR urography. The severity of obstruction differed in the two ureters, resulting in a multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) with an atretic ureter on one side and hydronephrosis that worsened over time due to progressive stenosis on the other. Although midureteric strictures are usually misdiagnosed as ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) or ureterovesical junction (UVJ) obstruction on conventional imaging, MR urography was able to clearly demonstrate both the anatomical and functional abnormalities. Additionally, because o

[Informative value of radiodiagnosis methods of pyelo-ureteral strictures in kidney anomaly].

A total of 98 patients aged 18-67 years (mean age 42.5 +/- 10.3 years) suspected to have a pelviureteral stricture (PUS) were examined using ultrasound investigation in B-mode (BUI), excretory urography (EU), angiography, slice and multislice computed tomography (SCT, MSCT). This combined examination allowed to make diagnosis of hydronephrosis in 83 (84.7%) patients including PUS diagnosis in 48 (57.8%) patients. Basing on CT findings PUS was operated in 41 (85.4%) patients. Sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of BUI in detection of the level of the upper urinary tract obstruction was 92.8,

Abnormalities of the lumbar spine in the coronal plane on plain abdominal radiographs.

The main objective of this study is to determine the prevalence of coronal abnormalities of the lumbar spine in a large population of patients with respect to their age and sex. Lumbar degenerative disease is associated with degenerative scoliosis. Degenerative scoliosis and lateral listhesis are important features to identify before decompressive surgery as deformity may not be seen on magnetic resonance imaging scans. Scoliosis and lateral listhesis may be important in the development of symptoms especially in an ageing population. All abdominal and plain kidney-ureter-bladder radiographs pe

Prone retroperitoneoscopy in treating complex renal vascular malformations.

INTRODUCTION: Two children presented with malignant hypertension due to complex reno-vascular malformations. The 7-min video shows the use of prone retroperitoneoscopy in both. PATIENT 1: A 6-year-old girl presented with convulsions and malignant hypertension. Captopril DMSA was suggestive of right renal artery stenosis. On formal angiography, the kidney was perfused by what appeared to be an arterio-venous malformation. The renal artery was hypoplastic and there were pulsatile vessels along the ureter due to the gonadal periureteric and gonadal inferior capsular collateral supply to the kidne

Ureteral triplication combined with right renal ectopia and ureteral cyst.

Ureteral triplication is one of the rarest malformations of the upper urinary tract. We report the case of a 12-year-old girl with right ureteral triplication combined with renal ectopia and ureteral cyst with stenosis at the junction of the ureteral cyst and distal ureter. The ureteral cyst was tailored and tubularized, and the tight junction was removed, as in Hynes-Anderson ureteropyeloplasty; on reevaluation almost 4 years later, kidney function was normal and computed tomography showed a normal kidney and ureter.

[Stenosis of the upper renal pelvis: rare complication of an incomplete ureteral duplicity. Embryological investigation].

A stenosis of the upper pole of an incomplete renal duplication is presented. The prenatal diagnosis of a right renal ureteropyelic junction syndrome, isolated, with a normal amniotic liquid was confirmed at birth. Intravenous pyelogram 8 days after birth showed three right dilated calical groups with a dilated renal ureteropyelic junction, but an normal inferior calical group suspected a renal bifidity. Renal MagIII scintigraphy evaluated the anatomical and functional stenosis and indicated surgery. Postoperative followings were simple and results good 3 years after. From this rare case, embr

Congenital ureteric stenosis: a study of 17 children.

AIM: To review cases of congenital ureteric stenosis treated in the period between 1999 and 2007. We propose to analyze the type of presentation, management and results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report 17 children aged 20 days to 8 years with obstructive uropathy due to congenital stenosis of the ureter at one or more levels. This condition could be mistaken for the more common pelviureteric junction obstruction (PUJO) or primary megaureter, but it is a distinct and more serious anomaly. 13 of the 17 children had one or more associated anomalies, the most significant of which was a contralate

The Morphology of Congenital Dilatation of the Ureter: Intrinsic Ureteral Lesions.

Congenitally dilated ureters are divided into four groups associated with (i) intrinsic ureteral lesions, (ii) vesico-ureteral reflux, (iii) urethral obstruction or (iv) other malformations such as myelomeningocele or the triad syndrome. One hundred and forty-seven dilated ureters in Group 1 (caused by Intrinsic ureteral lesions), have been studied qualitatively and quantitatively by standard pathological techniques, using the average size and population of muscle cells in the dilated ureter as the quantitative index of work-load or obstruction, and have been divided into four main types. Reno-ureteral diseases inducing hypertension in children.

UNLABELLED: Revealing the cause of renal hypertension is a major objective in medical practice. A series of investigations are required in order to elucidate the primary disease and then the treatment surgical and/or medical. The transitory hypertension of adolescent is not discussed in this paper. Measuring the blood pressure in children is often neglected and the evaluation of the hypertension is performed after the diagnosis of the renovascular disease. AIMS: The classification of renovascular hypertension in children and the statistical evaluation of its etiology in order to reveal the mo
