BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is a lethal disease with an increasing incidence. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data on diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic head carcinoma, and analyzed the factors affecting prognosis of the disease.
METHODS: The data of 189 patients with pancreatic head carcinoma treated from September 1, 1995 to August 31, 2005 were reviewed retrospectively. Ninety-four patients treated from September 1, 2000 to August 31, 2005 were followed up in April 2008. Renal transplantation is the best modality of treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease. Donor shortage remains a substantial problem, for which different strategies are employed, including acceptance of marginal donors and donor kidneys with anatomic variations. We performed a successful kidney transplant of a donor kidney that had complete duplication of the ureter. After transplant, the recipient had no urinary complications.

Duplication of ureter is an uncommon anomaly with a reported incidence of 0.6%-1%. It can be either complete or a partial duplication. We present a case of live-related renal transplant in which complete duplication of ureter was found as a surprise during bench preparation of the donor kidney, which was reported as partial duplication on the pre-operative multidetector computed tomography. The ureter is a derivate of the Wolffian mesonephric duct and undergoes complex changes during development. The most common developmental anomaly is complete duplication of the ureter. Duplication of the ureter may be complete or incomplete. Incomplete duplication of ureter is well known as bifid ureter. Presence of various anomalies of the ureter is associated with increased risk of urinary tract infections and many other clinical complications.

PATIENTS AND METHODS: Since January 2003, two adult patients with incomplete duplication of ureter with ureteropelvic junction obstruction of the lower moiety and a 4-month-old male baby with complete duplication of the ureter with reflux in the lower moiety underwent transperitoneal laparoscopic pyeloureterostomy. A case of bilateral synchronous ureteral tumors, in association with a unilateral incomplete duplication of ureter, is presented. This patient underwent right nephroureterectomy with removal of a cuff of bladder, partial resection of left ureter, and ileal loop interposition between renal pelvis and bladder.
