Radiographics : a review publication of the Radiological Society of North America, Inc2026eng
The ureter is an important conduit between the kidney and the bladder and is frequently imaged to rule out cancer in the upper genitourinary tract. However, while malignancy can occur, a spectrum of other pathologic ureteral findings can exist, and these can be divided into congenital, intrinsic, and extrinsic abnormalities that range from postoperative and neoplastic conditions to inflammatory disease. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the ureter, including the ureteral anatomy, ureteral imaging strategies, and various ureteral conditions and their associated imaging features.

Redo pyeloplasty is technically more complex due to more significant scar tissue and risk for poor ureteral blood supply affecting outcomes. Use of buccal graft uretero-pyeloplasty was originally reported in the pediatric population back in 2017 as an alternative for complex reoperations. We hypothesize that in highly selected group of pediatric patients undergoing redo pyeloplasty, a buccal graft uretero-pyeloplasty would demonstrate efficacy. A total of 6 institutions identified patients undergoing a robot-assisted buccal uretero-pyeloplasty from 2014 to 2025. Demographic, pre-operative, int

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) represent a heterogeneous group of developmental disorders and are the leading cause of pediatric chronic kidney disease worldwide. The phenotypic spectrum is broad, encompassing kidney agenesis, hypodysplasia, multicystic dysplastic kidneys, vesicoureteral reflux, obstructive uropathies, and other malformations affecting the kidneys, ureters, and urethra. Advances in genetics have begun to unravel the molecular pathways underlying these diverse phenotypes, yet the complexity of CAKUT reflects contributions from both monogenic varian

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2026eng
Ultrasonography is frequently utilized in patients with urinary incontinence to screen for structural abnormalities such as ectopic ureters (EUs). Furosemide can be administered during an ultrasound for a better assessment of the ureters and their insertions. Furosemide decreases urine specific gravity (USG), and differences in specific gravity allow a better visibility of ureteral jets on ultrasound; however, it is unknown whether furosemide has utility in patients with hyposthenuria or isosthenuria. The aims of this study were to determine if furosemide administration improves the diagnosis

Fetal hydronephrosis is the most frequently detected prenatal urinary tract abnormality and encompasses a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from transient physiological dilation to clinically significant obstructive uropathy with potential long-term renal consequences. The broader term urinary tract dilation integrates renal pelvic and calyceal dilation with abnormalities of the renal parenchyma, ureters, bladder, and amniotic fluid volume, thereby supporting more comprehensive risk stratification. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on fetal urinary tract development, prenatal diagnosis

Duplication of the kidney and ureter is a relatively rare congenital malformation compared with other systemic malformations. It is even rarer for the duplicate to have stones inside; therefore, the present study reports the case of a patient with complete repetitive ureteral malformations combined with occult stones who showed marked improvement in symptoms and good recovery after surgical treatment. The patient received a timely diagnosis and achieved a good treatment outcome. The patient was satisfied with the treatment and had a good follow-up. Early and accurate diagnosis and timely treat

We present a 35-year-old man with long-standing untreated hypertension who had no urinary symptoms, flank pain, or history of urinary tract infections and was later found to have bilateral ureteroceles with bilateral hydronephrosis and renal cortical thinning. A ureterocele is a congenital cystic dilation of the distal ureter as it inserts into the bladder that can impede urinary drainage. The initial laboratory workup for secondary hypertension was unremarkable, and he had a minimal response to first-line blood pressure management. Imaging was then sought to evaluate for structural causes of

Neurogenic bladder () in children commonly result from spinal injuries or congenital spinal malformations that disrupt sacral and spinal cord neural pathways. Such damage impairs detrusor contraction and sphincter relaxation, causing high intravesical pressures, detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia, vesicoureteral reflux, recurrent urinary tract infections, and incontinence. These dysfunctions can compromise renal function, growth, and quality of life. Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) remains the gold standard for management, enabling low-pressure voiding, preventing renal deterioration, red

OBJECTIVE: To describe a rare case of a retroperitoneal Müllerian cyst in a teenage girl with a protruding uterus and associated urogenital anomalies, and to discuss the challenges faced in differential diagnosis and management of such cases.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 14-year-old girl presented with a protruding uterus for several weeks, with a history of twin-twin transfusion syndrome at birth. Initial ultrasonography identified a large pelvic cystic tumor. Notably, during laparoscopy, a significant left retroperitoneal tubulocystic tumor was discovered, and the left ureter was a

Down syndrome (DS), the most common survivable autosomal aneuploidy, is associated with a high prevalence of congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), significantly increasing the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). This review examines the diversity of CAKUT phenotypes reported in individuals with DS, focusing on anomalies affecting the kidney, ureter, bladder, and urethra. According to available literature, hydronephrosis is the most common renal anomaly, often secondary to other CAKUT phenotypes, followed by renal hypoplasia and glomerulocystic disease. Furthermore, ob

RATIONALE: Ureteral triplication (UT) is a rare congenital urinary tract anomaly, with approximately 100 cases reported globally, arising from abnormal branching of the ureteric bud during embryogenesis.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old male presented with recurrent left flank and abdominal pain for 3 years, worsening over the past year, accompanied by gross hematuria and purulent urine, suggesting urinary tract infection and obstruction.
DIAGNOSES: Computed tomography urography and cystoscopy confirmed left-sided ureteral triplication, with 1 malformed ureter containing a calculus and proxim

Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a common urological disorder in children, and its prevalence is difficult to determine, as many VUR cases remain asymptomatic. VUR is considered nearly physiological during infancy and often resolves spontaneously within the first few years of life. Most patients present with low-grade VUR, which is thought to be caused by an insufficient intramural course of the ureter in the bladder wall, a condition that tends to improve as the child grows and develops. The higher the grade of VUR , the lower the probability of spontaneous resolution of this condition during e

Introduction Congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT) are embryonic disorders that arise during development and result in a spectrum of defects in the kidneys and outflow tracts, which include the ureters, the bladder, and the urethra. The clinical spectrum ranges from severe malformations, such as renal agenesis, to potentially milder manifestations, such as vesicoureteral reflux. CAKUT are the leading cause of kidney failure in children and one of the most common indications for kidney transplantation. Purpose This research aims to determine the pattern of CAKUT in prete

BACKGROUND: Ureteral duplication is one of the most common anomalies affecting the genitourinary system. A broad spectrum of clinical presentations and involvement leads to challenges in diagnosing and treating pediatric urologists. Among the variations commonly encountered are incomplete and complete ureteral duplications with normally developed renal moieties and ureters. In this study, we report our experience regarding this spectrum of anomalies in terms of clinical presentation, workup, and management.
METHODS: This study was conducted as a single-center retrospective study at our instit

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT) comprise a large spectrum of congenital malformations, and combined manifestations of CAKUT spectrum could coexist in the same person, which make the management more challenging. We present a rare clinical case of left incomplete duplex kidney with calculus and homolateral ureterovesical junction obstruction (UVJO) that occurred in a female adult, and report the combined surgical management of lithotripsy by flexible ureteroscopy with holmium laser, and refitting the ureter into the bladder after resection of the affecte

We present a rare incidental finding of Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome identified during the autopsy of a reproductive-aged woman who died in a motor vehicle accident. In situ examination showed the absence of both the uterus and cervix, with the vaginal canal ending in a blind pouch that measured 7.0 × 6.0 cm, with a depth of 4 cm. Both ovaries were present and positioned high near the iliac vessels, demonstrating multiple cysts upon cut surfaces. The bilateral fallopian tubes were absent in their entirety. The right kidney, along with its hilar vessels and ureter, was also ab

Crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE) is a rare congenital anomaly in which a kidney is located on the opposite side from where its ureter connects to the bladder, merging into the other kidney. It has been linked to other rare congenital malformations, including the VACTERL association (vertebral anomalies, anal atresia, cardiac anomalies, tracheoesophageal fistula, esophageal atresia, renal anomalies, and limb abnormalities), the MURCS association (müllerian ducts, renal, and cervicothoracic spine anomalies), increased incidence of infections, obstruction, cystic dysplasia, and urolithiasis. BACKGROUND: Congenital urogenital anomalies affect 4-60 per 10,000 births. Maternal obesity, along with other risk factors, is well documented as a contributing factor. However, the impact of paternal obesity on risk is unclear. Obesity is prevalent among men of reproductive age, highlighting the need for further research into the potential association between paternal obesity and offspring congenital urogenital anomalies.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to determine the association between paternal obesity and the risk of congenital urogenital malformations in offspring.
METHODS: Case-control s
