Intrathoracic kidney: A rare presentation of ectopic kidney.

The thoracic kidney is the rarest form of renal ectopia. Furthermore, it is usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally. It is seen as a mass in the posterior mediastinum or juxta-diaphragmatic on chest radiography. A computed tomography scan or magnetic resonance imaging is usually needed for a definitive diagnosis. The thoracic kidney typically exits the retroperitoneal space through the foramen of Bochdalek.

Variation in Definitions of Kidney Abnormality in Patients with Spina Bifida: A Systematic Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: We systematically reviewed the variability in definitions of kidney abnormality (KA) outcomes in individuals with spina bifida (SB). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic scoping review was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase™, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycInfo®, Web of Science™ and ClinicalTrials.gov for articles from time of database inception to September 2020. No language or patient age restrictions were applied. Primary research articles involving individuals with SB where KA was assessed as an outcome were included. Means of assessing KA and defining KA severity were abstracted. RE

Zinner's syndrome: Masquerading as pyonephrotic ectopic kidney.

Zinner's syndrome is a rare developmental anomaly of Wolffian duct, comprising a triad of seminal vesicle cyst, ipsilateral renal agenesis and ejaculatory duct obstruction, first described by Zinner in 1914. Several aberrations have been reported like renal dysplasia, ectopic ureteric orifice in one of the derivatives of Wolffian duct. Usually it presents in second to fourth decade of life with symptoms of urinary bladder irritation/obstruction, cyst distension, ejaculatory duct obstruction. The diagnosis is principally based on imaging studies, usually confirmed by MRI. Treatment is based upo

Fitness to Serve in the Armed Forces and Internal Medicine: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of the medical fitness to serve in the armed forces has two objectives: to prevent the military operations from being jeopardized by a medical issue, and to protect soldiers from the sequelae of diseases that could become complicated in the operational field, especially in overseas operations where soldiers are exposed to a remote setting and a long evacuation time. Little is known about fitness decisions for soldiers with systemic or autoimmune diseases. Therefore, we conducted a single-center retrospective study of internal medicine fitness decisions. Genome assembly of the numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus), the only termitivorous marsupial.

BACKGROUND: Tissue infiltration by neutrophils during acute inflammatory states causes substantial tissue injury. While the magnitude of tissue neutrophil accumulation in innate immune responses is profoundly greater in males than females, fundamental aspects of the molecular mechanisms underlying these sex differences remain largely unknown. METHODS: We investigated sex differences in neutrophil stimulation and recruitment in ischemia/reperfusion (I/R; mesenteric or renal) or carrageenan pleurisy in rats or mice, as well as skin injury in human volunteers. The induction of potent chemoattrac

Contralateral Coupling During Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy for Stones in Ectopic Kidney: Is It Feasible?

Purpose: Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) results in a lower stone-free rate (SFR) for ectopic kidneys when using the standard technique, directing the shock wave from the same side of the stone; however, this may not be the optimal approach when the ectopic kidney is located more medial and anterior than the normally positioned kidney. Thus, contralateral coupling where waves come from the opposite direction may result in a better outcome. We tested the feasibility and outcome of contralateral coupling during SWL for stone in ectopic kidney. Materials and Methods: We prospectively r

Safe Completion of Laparoscopic Anterior Resection in a Patient With a Solitary Pelvic Kidney: A Case Report.

Pelvic kidney, an ectopic renal mass caused by developmental failure, is a rare condition. Here, we report a case of laparoscopic anterior resection in a patient with a solitary pelvic kidney. A 76-year-old man was diagnosed as having rectosigmoid colon cancer. Preoperative computed tomography revealed a left ectopic kidney in his pelvis. Computed tomographic angiography and retrograde pyelography were performed preoperatively to identify the renal vessels and the ureter. To keep the surgical plane intact for complete mesocolic excision, a complete laparoscopic anterior resection was safely pe

Left-to-right crossed fused renal ectopia with pyelonephritis mimicking appendix mass.

Crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE) is an uncommon developmental anomaly of the genitourinary system whereby the two kidneys are located on the same side of the body and joined together, while the ureter of the ectopic kidney still enters the bladder in its normal side. CFRE has variable clinical presentations and usually discovered incidentally when patients are investigated for abdominal complaints. Treatment may be conservative when renal function is preserved with no associated symptomatic urological complications. Highlighted here is the unusual presentation of left-to-right CFRE with acut

The safety and efficacy of mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy vs. retrograde intrarenal surgery for treatment of renal lithiasis in pelvic ectopic kidney: an exploratory pilot study.

BACKGROUND: To compare the safety and efficacy of mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) for the treatment of renal lithiasis in patients with pelvic ectopic kidney. METHODS: From January 2015 to October 2017, mini-PCNL and RIRS were performed in ten patients diagnosed with lithiasis in pelvic ectopic kidneys, including three cases under laparoscopy-assisted mini-PCNL. Patient demographics and perioperative characteristics (age, gender, BMI, side of pelvic kidney, stone size, stone number, stone location, special medical history, and ASA physical sta

Pelvic Renal Ectopia: Unusual Position Abnormality.

Pelvic renal ectopia is a congenital anomaly secondary to poor renal migration to the lower back. Usually, these pathologies are of asymptomatic course, therefore its finding is usually fortuitous during radiological examinations for other causes or in work-up of the infrequent symptomatic cases characterized by the occurrence of recurrent infections or symptoms of obstructive uropathy. The objective of this report is to present a case of a 37-year-old female with the unusual manifestation of left pelvic renal ectopia. She was intervened for acute lithiasic cholecystitis, and radiologic techni

Unilateral Hypoplastic Pelvic Ectopic Kidney Presenting as a Cold Abscess: A Case Report.

Renal ectopia, even though a benign condition, presents diagnostic challenges when its complications arise. Cold abscess in an abnormally sited kidney may, therefore, create a diagnostic conundrum for the clinician. We present the case of a 55-year-old male who had a suppurating ectopic kidney that mimicked an abdominal visceral mitotic lesion necessitating initial laparotomy, reviewed the literature, and highlighted the need to consider the differential diagnosis, especially in patients who have been referred from peripheral hospitals where generous antibiotic therapy has been instituted. We

[Renal Cell Carcinoma in the Left Pelvic Kidney : A Case Report].

We report the case of a 61-year-old man who was incidentally diagnosed with a left pelvic ectopic kidney with renal tumor. Computed tomography showed a hypervascular tumor at the posterior surface of the ectopic kidney with five arterial and two venous supply vessels. On preoperative examination, this patient had respiratory dysfunction. For these reasons, an open radical nephrectomy was performed. Histological examination revealed a clear cell renal cell carcinoma, pT1aN0M0, G1, and a Fuhrman nuclear grading system grade of G2. No evidence of disease was observed 15 months after surgery.

Laparoscopic pyelolithotomy in pelvic ectopic kidney: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic kidney is a rare congenital anomaly. The ectopic kidney is more susceptible to developing lithiasis. The management of this type of lithiasis is a challenge. The objective of this paper was to conduct a review of available literature on the treatment of stone in ectopic kidney. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Description of a case of transperitoneal laparoscopic pyelolithotomy for the treatment of inferior calyceal lithiasis in a right pelvic kidney. A literature review was performed by using Pubmed. The following terms and combination terms were searched: "pelvic ectopic kidney",

Retrograde ureteroscopic lithotripsy in cross-fused renal ectopia.

INTRODUCTION: Cross-fused renal ectopia is a rare congenital malformation, and few cases of urolithiasis have been treated by retrograde ureteroscopic lithotripsy. We report a case of urolithiasis in right-to-left and superior-type cross-fused renal ectopia, successfully treated by the retrograde approach. CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old woman with two 14-mm renal stones in cross-fused renal ectopia underwent retrograde ureteroscopic lithotripsy. Although we did not recognize the anomaly preoperatively, we could diagnose urolithiasis in the ectopic kidney intraoperatively. The patient had no

Case Report on Crossed Fused Renal Ectopia With a Large Calculus and Its Management.

Among congenital renal anomalies, the ectopic kidney is a rare occurrence. Crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE) - an even rarer subtype of ectopic kidney - is characterized by both kidneys being fused together on one side of the spine. CFRE is usually asymptomatic but can present with vague symptoms if the anomalous kidney becomes infected, is obstructed by calculus, or has a neoplastic change. There is no indication for surgical intervention if the kidney functions normally. This report presents a case of CFRE in a 31-year-old male with recurrent right flank pain resulting from a large calculus

Pelviureteric Junction Obstruction in Ectopic Kidneys with Extrarenal Calyces: A Rare Renal Anomaly.

Extrarenal calyces (ERC) is a rare renal anomaly where calyces lie outside the renal parenchyma and are connected to pelvis by draining infundibulum. Its presentation with pelviureteric junction obstruction presents a confusing intraoperative finding. We report two cases of ERC with pelviureteric junction obstruction in the ectopic kidney. Emphasis is laid on the defining the anatomy so that reader can identify the condition if he comes across similar situation. The two patients were managed by minimal access approach. Management of these cases and review of pediatric cases reported in literat
