Genetic Investigation of Pregnancies With an Isolated Fetal Pelvic Kidney.

OBJECTIVE: To explore genetic investigative results in fetuses with isolated pelvic kidney. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 212 fetuses with isolated pelvic kidney diagnosed on second trimester anatomy ultrasound. All cases underwent invasive prenatal diagnosis for copy number variant (CNV) detection by chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA). For those with a negative CNV, trio exome sequencing (ES) was an option. Clinical and laboratory data were collected and reviewed for these cases, including maternal demographics, prenatal sonographic findings, molecular testing results, and pr

Focal double-lumen ureter causing upper ureteric obstruction in a pelvic ectopic kidney: A rare case report.

A 49-year-old woman presented with right flank pain and hematuria. Computed tomography demonstrated a nonfunctioning pelvic ectopic kidney with severe hydronephrosis and cortical thinning. Nephrectomy revealed an abnormally attached, markedly dilated ureter coursing anteriorly along the renal surface and abruptly narrowing distally. Histological examination of the transition zone demonstrated two distinct urothelial-lined lumina within a shared lamina propria and common muscularis propria and adventitia, with distal reconstitution into a single lumen. The findings support a rare focal double-l

Laparoscopic Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty with Butler flap for pelviureteric junction obstruction in a pelvic ectopic kidney presenting as a giant palpable abdominal mass: A case report.

Pelvic ectopic kidney with pelviureteric junction obstruction is rare and poses significant reconstructive challenges. We report a 35-year-old man presenting with a giant palpable abdominal mass caused by congenital obstruction in a malrotated pelvic ectopic kidney. Diuretic renography showed 11.6% split renal function. The patient underwent successful transperitoneal laparoscopic Anderson-Hynes pyeloplasty with Butler flap reconstruction and double-J stenting. Recovery was uneventful. Six-month renography demonstrated improved drainage with split renal function increasing to 22%, while the pa

A double shooting method for two-point boundary value problems in multibody dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Gynecological examination and transvaginal ultrasound are difficult or impossible in girls and young women who have not started their sexual life. CT is not a method of choice in this age group because of the ionizing radiation and iodine-containing contrast media. MRI is chosen then. MATERIAL/METHODS: Pelvic MRI was performed in 15 patients aged 9-19 years with suspected ovarian mass after they had had unclear gynecological and sonographic examinations. 1.5 T MRI systems were used. SE,T(F)SE and SPIR sequences were applied in T1- and T2-weighted images in three planes. Contrast m

Metabolic and surgical predictors in horseshoe and pelvic ectopic kidneys.

BACKGROUND: Horseshoe kidney (HSK) and pelvic ectopic kidney (PEK) are congenital anomalies linked to impaired urinary drainage and a higher risk of nephrolithiasis. Evidence regarding metabolic profiles and surgical outcomes in these groups remains sparse. This study assessed predictors of postoperative stone clearance and 12-month recurrence in patients with HSK and PEK undergoing endourological procedures intervention. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 50 consecutive patients with CT-confirmed HSK or PEK treated with retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) or mini-percutaneous

Laparoscopy-assisted percutaneous nephrolithotomy in a pelvic ectopic kidney: A minimally invasive approach.

Ectopic pelvic kidneys present unique anatomical challenges in the management of nephrolithiasis due to their abnormal position and proximity to surrounding structures. This case report describes a 58-year-old male patient with a 26-mm renal stone in a left pelvic ectopic kidney, successfully treated using a laparoscopy-assisted percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) approach. The procedure involved initial ureteral catheter placement, laparoscopic mobilisation of the kidney and fluoroscopic-guided percutaneous access for stone fragmentation and removal. Laparoscopic assistance improved visualisa

Zinner Syndrome: An Incidental Finding.

The authors present a case of a 56-year-old man referred to the urology clinic after an incidental finding on abdominal ultrasound. Imaging revealed an oval cystic lesion adjacent to the right seminal vesicle, initially interpreted as a probable atrophic ectopic kidney. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) confirmed right renal agenesis, ipsilateral seminal vesicle cyst, and probable ejaculatory duct obstruction. A small intralesional nodular component was identified. The patient was asymptomatic, with preserved renal function and a prostate-specific antigen of 0.9 ng/mL. A transrectal biopsy was

Avoiding the Pitfall: Ectopic Pelvic Kidney Mimicking a Pelvic Mass in a Patient With Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections. A Case Report.

Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common clinical presentation, but they can sometimes be the key signpost to a hidden anatomical surprise. We report the case of a 55-year-old obese woman with a decade-long history of recurrent UTIs and pelvic fullness. Examination revealed a vague pelvic mass, suspicious for a gynecological neoplasm. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) scan definitively diagnosed an asymptomatic ectopic pelvic kidney, with an empty right renal fossa. The pelvic kidney was the likely anatomical predisposing factor for her recurrent UTIs, which were compl

Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma in a 60-Year-Old Man Arising From Congenital Left-Sided Ectopic Right Kidney (Crossed Fused Renal Ectopia) With Invasion Into the Contralateral Kidney.

BACKGROUND Crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE) is an uncommon congenital renal anomaly in which 1 kidney crosses the midline and fuses with the contralateral kidney. Although CFRE is often asymptomatic, its rare association with renal malignancy poses substantial diagnostic and surgical challenges due to abnormal anatomy and vascular supply. This report describes clear cell renal cell carcinoma (RCC) arising in CFRE with direct invasion into the contralateral, normally positioned kidney. CASE REPORT A 60-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of mild left loin pain without urinary or sys

Sigmoid (S-shaped) cross-fused renal ectopia associated with calculus in a 3-year-old child: A case report and literature review.

Sigmoid (S-shaped) crossed-fused renal ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly, infrequently complicated by urolithiasis. We report a 3-year-old male child presenting with abdominal pain, diarrhea, and intermittent fever, previously diagnosed with a renal stone. Imaging revealed a 13-mm pelvic stone in the lower ectopic kidney with moderate hydronephrosis; laboratory tests were normal. The patient underwent open nephrolithotomy via a right modified Gibson incision, achieving complete stone removal through a small avascular parenchymal incision. Recovery was uneventful, and stone composition analy

Cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer with pelvic ectopic kidney: a case report.

Pelvic ectopic kidney is a rare congenital anomaly, occurring in approximately 0.1% of the adult population, and is often asymptomatic. However, it can easily be mistaken for a pelvic tumor or lymph-node metastasis. This case report details a rare presentation of cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer with a pelvic ectopic kidney. A 56-year-old Chinese woman was incidentally found to have a pelvic mass accompanied by a pelvic ectopic kidney during evaluation for hip pain. Pathology following cervical lymph-node biopsy was consistent with high-grade serous adenocarcinoma. Comprehensive assess

Pelvic Kidney With Contralateral Renal Vascular Variants: A Rare Anatomical Case From Djibouti.

A pelvic kidney is a rare congenital renal ectopia frequently associated with vascular anomalies. Knowledge of these variations is essential for diagnostic evaluation and surgical planning. We report the case of a 35-year-old man in whom a right pelvic kidney with unusual vascular variations was detected on computed tomography urography. A single renal artery arising from the anterior aspect of the aortic bifurcation supplied the ectopic kidney, which was drained by three right renal veins. In addition, the contralateral kidney, located in its normal anatomical position, also exhibited vascula

Renal Cell Carcinoma in Crossed Fused Renal Ectopia: A Case Report of a Rare Congenital Renal Fusion.

Crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE) is a rare congenital renal fusion anomaly in which both kidneys are located on the same side of the body and are usually fused. Simultaneous occurrence of primary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in CFRE represents a rare entity. Although CFRE may remain asymptomatic, it can be associated with complications such as urinary tract infections, obstruction, calculi, rarely malignancy, and tumors within the fused kidneys, which are exceptionally rare. Although the literature reports only a very small number of cases of CFRE coexisting with RCC, we present a case of a 46

A case of complete renal pedicle avulsion with deceptively stable hemodynamics: Critical diagnostic pitfall of misdiagnosis as ectopic kidney.

We report a 42-year-old female with AAST Grade V renal trauma from blunt crush injury, who presented with hemodynamic stability despite surgically confirmed complete renal pedicle avulsion. Initial CT mimicked congenital ectopic kidney, risking misdiagnosis. The patient underwent emergency nephrectomy with favorable outcome. We elucidate the pathophysiology of this paradoxical phenomenon, and highlight its diagnostic pitfalls and management principles.

A Case of Monozygotic Twins Carrying a Novel Loss-of-Function Variant in the MYCBP2 Gene, Presenting With Microcephaly, Ectopic Kidney and Growth Restriction.

What is already known about this topic? ◦. Pathogenic variants in the MYCBP2 gene are associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, congenital heart disease, skeletal and ocular anomalies, and cancers. However, reports on the prenatal phenotypes of fetuses carrying MYCBP2 variants remain rare. What does this study add? ◦. A novel de novo heterozygous MYCBP2 variant c.3421C > T p.(Arg1141Ter) was identified and confirmed as pathogenic. This variant expands the known MYCBP2 variant spectrum. The presence of microcephaly, ectopic kidney and growth retardation in fetuses with MYCBP2 variants expan

A radiological evaluation of crossed-fused ectopic kidney in adult female: Case report and comprehensive review of literature.

Crossed renal ectopia with fusion is a rare congenital kidney anomaly where the kidneys are fused and cross each other. Patients are asymptomatic while some may experience lower abdominal pain, hematuria, fever, urinary tract infection, hypertension, renal failure, and a palpable abdominal mass. It is often discovered incidentally during evaluations for related conditions like renal stones, pyelonephritis, vesico-ureteric reflux, cysts, or malignancy, with renal cell carcinoma being the most common. Diagnosis of crossed-fused renal ectopia can be done through abdominal ultrasonography, retrogr

Retrograde intrarenal surgery in a non-fused left crossed ectopic kidney with large renal calculus: a case report and review of literature.

Crossed renal ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly, with non-fused variants being exceptionally uncommon. The management of nephrolithiasis in such kidneys is challenging due to the abnormal anatomy, malrotation, and altered ureteral course. We report a case of a non-fused left crossed ectopic kidney with a 21 × 14.5 mm with density of 1250 HU renal calculus successfully managed with retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS), achieving complete stone clearance (SC). This case highlights the feasibility of RIRS, even in complex renal anomalies with a significant stone burden. A review of the existin

Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome: From Radiological Diagnosis to Further Challenges-Review and Update.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome encompasses a range of Müllerian duct anomalies characterized by congenital absence of the uterus and the upper two-thirds of the vagina in young women who otherwise exhibit normal endocrine function and a 46,XX karyotype. MRKH syndrome can occur in an isolated form (type I) or in association with other congenital anomalies (type II or MURCS association), which may include renal, vertebral, auditory, and cardiac defects. It represents one of the most frequent causes of primary amenorrhea, affecting approximately 1 in every 4000-5000 women. MRKH sy

Right Iliac Ectopic Kidney With an Extrarenal Pelvis, Aberrant Upper-Pole Arterial Supply, and Multiple Renal Cysts.

Renal ectopia results from an abnormal arrest of renal ascent during embryonic development and is often associated with malrotation, unusual vasculature, and anomalies of the collecting system. Although numerous ectopic kidneys are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally, their variant anatomy holds clinical significance as it may interfere with imaging interpretation and surgical procedures. We present a case of a right iliac ectopic kidney identified during the routine dissection of an 82-year-old male donor. The kidney was located in the right iliac fossa and demonstrated marked anterior m
