Giant lymph node hyperplasia is the main symptom of Castleman’s disease (CD), which is a rare and easily overlooked lymphoproliferative disease that mimics both benign and malignant lesions. Several cases of CD after renal transplantation have been reported in the literature. A 43-year-old man was admitted to our medical center with high serum globulin levels after receiving a living donor kidney transplant. A lymph node biopsy raised suspicion for multicentric CD. Because of the poor therapeutic effect of reduction of immunosuppression, the patient was treated with CHOP chemotherapy comprisin

This paper describes three autopsy cases with postmortem diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with detailed macroscopic examination as well as advanced microscopic studies of organ tissues collected using hematoxylin-eosin stains and immunohistochemical markers. Two of the cases were admitted briefly in the County Clinical Emergency Hospital of Sibiu, and one was found deceased at his home address. All three autopsies were completed at the County morgue, in the COVID-19 restricted area, using complete protective equipment. The lungs of the patients seemed to be the center organ of invasion and p

We describe the case of a previously 77-year-old man who accessed in our Nephrology Unit for acute kidney injury (AKI) on chronic kidney disease (CKD), gastric discomfort and vague urinary symptoms with apparently preserved diuresis and suspected "ascites". Physical examination confirmed the presence of abdominal effusion, even though ultrasound abdominal examination revealed the presence of a giant diverticular urinary bladder with bilateral hydronephrosis. We discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of these rare complications by briefly reviewing the technical aspects and the possibl

Herein we present a clinical case of the Caroli syndrome caused by the compound heterozygous mutation in the PKHD1 gene. Histopathological assessment of liver detected biliary cirrhosis, numerous dilated bile ducts of various sizes, hyperplastic cholangiocytes containing a large amount of acid mucopolysaccharides, decreased ß-tubulin expression and increased proliferation of cholangiocytes. A significant proportion of hepatic tissue was composed of giant cysts lined with a single layer of cholangiocytes, containing pus and bile in its lumen and surrounded by granulation tissue. An accumulation

BACKGROUND: Neonatal autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) is associated with giant kidneys, lung hypoplasia, pulmonal hypertension, and end-stage renal failure. Depending on the study, mortality is reported to range between 20 and 80%.
OBJECTIVES: Does bilateral nephrectomy improve survival?
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2010 and 2016, we treated 7 children with prenatally diagnosed ARPKD. All had a planned delivery by cesarean section. After birth, oscillated ventilation with nitrogen enrichment was initiated to achieve maximum oxygenation and to decrease pumonary hypertens

Prostatic parenchymal calculi are common in ageing men who are evaluated for benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer. Giant prostatic calculi are very rare, usually associated with local predisposing factors for urinary stasis and infections, and traditionally managed by open surgery. We present the first case of its kind to be associated with a concurrent staghorn nephrolithiasis, and removed successfully by endoscopic approach using an access sheath through the urethra.

Various types of tumors, including benign tumors, arise from the renal parenchyma or renal capsule, but it is difficult to predict the histological type preoperatively. Here, we report a case of perirenal non-specific lymphadenitis resected laparoscopically. A 79-year-old man with a history of diabetic mellitus and noninvasive bladder cancer had an incidentally-detected enhanced mass in contact with the surface of the left kidney. Given the possibility that the tumor was malignant, we resected the mass laparoscopically. Intraoperative findings revealed that the tumor did not invade the renal p

A 63-year-old man with HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection and end-stage renal disease, treated with lanthanum carbonate phosphate binder for 4 years, presented with anemia and an upper gastrointestinal bleed. Upper endoscopy revealed a nodular hyperplastic epithelium, with an endoscopic ultrasound confirming hyperechoic material within the nodules. Light microscopy showed collections of histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells containing brown granular cytoplasmic material and extracellular crystalline material, a finding confirmed by electron microscopy. Similar pathologic finding

Brown tumors also called as osteoclastomas, are rare nonneoplastic lesions that arise in the setting of primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism. Parathyroid adenomas or hyperplasia constitute the major Brown tumor source in primary hyperparathyroidism while chronic renal failure is the leading cause in secondary hyperparathyroidism. Most of the patients with the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism present with kidney stones or isolated hypercalcemia. However, nearly one third of patients are asymptomatic and hypercalcemia is found incidentally. Skeletal involvement such as generalized os

Bladder stones are frequently seen in elderly men and account for 5% of all urinary stones. They develop secondary to infravesical obstructions, such as prostatic hyperplasia and neurogenic bladder. A 56-year-old patient with frequent and painful urination, dysuria, and minor complaints of suprapubic pain was referred to our clinic. He was diagnosed with bladder stones by non-contrast abdominopelvic computerized tomography, kidney-ureter-bladder radiography, and urinary system ultrasonography. Cystolithotomy was applied on a giant stone measuring 11×6.5×10 cm that filled the intravesical cavit

The safety of quantum dots (QDs) 705 was evaluated in this study. Mice were treated with QD705 (intravenous) at a single dose of (40 pmol) for 4, 12, 16, and 24 weeks. Effects of QD705 on kidneys were examined. While there was a lack of histopathology, reduction in renal functions was detected at 16 weeks. Electron microscopic examination revealed alterations in proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) cell mitochondria at even much earlier time, including disorientation and reduction of mitochondrial number (early change), mitochondrial swelling, and later compensatory mitochondrial hypertrophy (enla

Castleman disease is a rare lymphoproliferative lesion that is predominantly found in the mediastinum. Retroperitoneal and pararenal localizations are very rare. We describe a 36-year-old man with a hyaline vascular type of Castleman disease involving renal parenchyma and a paraaortic lymph node. Most reported renal Castleman disease was plasma cell type with systemic symptoms. Herein, we report the first Korean case of the hyaline vascular type of Castleman disease involving the renal parenchyma and the paraaortic lymph node simultaneously.

Castleman's disease is a rare benign lymphoproliferative disorder that frequently affects lymph nodes of the mediastinal thorax and the neck. It very rarely affects the renal sinus. We report a case of Castleman's disease arising in the renal sinus in a 64-year-old man. The patient visited the hospital with the chief complaint of hematuria. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a homogeneous mass in the sinus of the left kidney, radiologically interpreted as a malignant urothelial tumor. Subsequently, nephroureterectomy was performed, after which microscopic examination of the specimen reveal

Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is comprised of a spectrum of lymphoid diseases, ranging from early lesions, such as plasmacytic hyperplasia, to monomorphic neoplasms, including plasmacytoma-like lesions. Although PTLD may involve a variety of organs, primary cutaneous PTLD is rare. We report a unique case of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive primary cutaneous giant cell plasmacytoma developed 5 years after renal/pancreatic transplant in a 55-year-old male patient. The patient received local radiotherapy without reduction in immunosuppression and responded well. A review of

Histiocytic sarcoma is the most frequent hematopoietic tumor in rats. We report here a histiocytic sarcoma infiltrating the liver, the spleen and the pancreas from a Wistar rat. In the liver, the tumor was associated with oval cell and bile duct hyperplasia. The cells looked like neoplastic histocytic cells described in this species but with some particularities (e.g. lack of multinucleated giant cells). At immunohistochemistry, neoplastic cells in the liver were vimentine positive but lysozyme and CD68 negative. In the kidney, lysozyme-positive cytoplasmic droplets were observed. We describe

Stenosis is a major cause of failure of hemodialysis vascular grafts and is primarily caused by neointimal hyperplasia (NH) at the anastomoses. The objective of this article is to provide a scientific review of the biology underlying this disorder and a critical review of the state-of-the-art investigational preventive strategies in order to stimulate further research in this exciting area. The histology of the NH shows myofibroblasts (that are probably derived from adventitial fibroblasts), extracellular matrices, pro-inflammatory cells including foreign-body giant cells, a variety of growth

We report about a 32-year-old patient presenting with a large pelvic mass. Sonographic and radiological findings were inconclusive. Open tumorectomy of the mass weighing 500 g was performed. Intraoperative fresh-frozen sections revealed no clear signs of malignancy. Decisive histology and immunohistochemistry led to the diagnosis of benign ectopic prostatic adenomyomatosis. The histology and possible etiologies of this rare finding are discussed.

Xanthogranulomatous inflammation is a distinguished histopathological entity affecting several organs, predominantly the kidney and gallbladder. So far, only a small number of cases of xanthogranulomatous inflammation occurring in female genital tract have been described, most frequently affecting the endometrium and histologically characterized by replacement of endometrium by xanthogranulomatous inflammation composed of abundant foamy histiocytes, siderophages, giant cells, fibrosis, calcification and accompanying polymorphonuclear leucocytes, plasma cells and lymphocytes of polyclonal origi

A 55 year-old man complained dysuria and visited to our hospital. Physical examination showed firm large mass occupying whole abdomen. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a huge retroperitoneal tumor which compressed intestine, liver, kidney, and urinary bladder. We performed extirpation of the tumor (8.6 kg, largest diameter 60 cm) which was composed of myxoid stromal region associated with cystic pattern. Histological examination revealed that the epithelium of the cystic region was positive for prostate specific antigen (PSA) immunostaining. The tumor was diagnosed phyllodes tumor of the

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Castleman's disease, or giant lymph node hyperplasia, is a rare disorder of the lymphoid tissue that causes lymph node enlargement. It is considered benign in its localized form, but aggressive in the multicentric type. The definitive diagnosis is based on postoperative pathological findings. The aim here was to describe a case of retroperitoneal unicentric Castleman's disease in the retroperitoneum.
CASE REPORT: A 61-year old white male with weight loss and listlessness presented with moderate arterial hypertension and leukopenia. Abdominal tomography revealed a 5 x 4
