Metastatic tumours to the oral cavity - pathogenesis and analysis of 673 cases.

The oral region is an uncommon site for metastatic tumour cell colonization and is usually evidence of a wide spread disease. In 25% of cases, oral metastases were found to be the first sign of the metastatic spread and in 23% it was the first indication of an undiscovered malignancy at a distant site. The jawbones, particularly the mandible, were more frequently affected than the oral soft tissues (2:1). In the oral soft tissues, the attached gingiva was the most commonly affected site (54%). The major primary sites presenting oral metastases were the lung, kidney, liver, and prostate for men

[Acute renal failure due to thrombotic microangiopathy associated with Castleman's disease].

We report a case of a 30-year-old man presenting with abdominal pain, fever, homodynamic instability, hepatosplenomegaly, acute renal failure, cervical lymph nodes, anaemia and thrombocytopenia. The patient was treated with empiric antibiotics, high dose corticosteroids, gammaglobulins, noradrenalin and diary intermittent haemodialysis, with an excellent response. The renal biopsy showed a thrombotic microangiopathy, the lymph node biopsy showed a Castleman s disease. Castleman s disease (also known as giant lymph node hyperplasia or angiofollicular lymph node hyperplasia) is a clinicopatholog

An outbreak of systemic granulomatous disease in cows with high milk yields.

Seven of 92 lactating Holstein cows on a dairy farm developed urticaria with alopecia and decreased milk production, and three of the seven died over the course of 7 to 18 days. Pathologic examination of the three cows, including the two dead and one euthanized cow, revealed that the skin, liver, spleen, kidneys, heart, salivary glands, pancreas, adrenal glands, mammary glands, lymph nodes, and trigeminal ganglia had lymphocytic to lymphogranulomatous inflammation. Inflammation predominated by lymphocytic infiltration was prominent in the heart, pancreas, mammary glands, adrenal gland, and tri

[Successful subtotal parathyroidectomy for giant tumor calcinosis with secondary hyperparathyroidism].

A 54-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism due to chronic renal failure. She was on hemodialysis for 7 years and suffered from giant tumor calcinosis of the major joints associated with severe hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. The largest one of the left hip joint caused gait disturbance. Medical therapy was unsuccessful and she underwent subtotal parathyroidectomy. After the operation, although the levels of serum calcium and phosphate were not normalized, the level of parathyroid hormone was lowered to the normal range. The volume o

Kidney pathology in non-obstructive urolithiasis in cattle.

The objectives of the present study were to investigate the gross and histopathological findings in non-obstructive urolithiasis. Pathological examinations were carried out on 102 cattle kidneys with non-obstructive urolithiasis. The common gross lesions were cyst formations in the kidney lobes, hyperaemia and haemorrhage. The weight of the stones differed from 0.02 to 237.44 g and the colour changed brown to white. The calculi had different shapes. At histopathological examination of the kidneys slight to severe mononuclear cell infiltrations were commonly observed. Haemorrhage and connective

Immunoglobulin G profiles in different forms of periodontitis.

UNLABELLED: Tuberculosis (TB), the biggest cause of death from any known infectious disease, has been a problem for the world's health system for many years. The only approved vaccine is BCG and now a number of vaccines are undergoing clinical trials. The newly recognised mRNA vaccines can provide a good alternative to the traditional vaccine. Therefore, the goal of this work is to use computational techniques to build a multi-stage tuberculosis mRNA vaccine. Nine multistage-expressing Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) proteins that have been linked to cell entry, pathogenesis, and dormancy reg

Isolation and molecular characterization of herpesvirus from cultured European eels Anguilla anguilla in Taiwan.

A herpesvirus has been isolated for the first time from a population of European eels Anguilla anguilla cultured in a recirculated system in Taiwan. Syncytia formation was detected in EP-1 (eel epidermis) cell cultures inoculated with cell-free homogenates prepared from both integument and visceral organs of moribund fish. Inoculation of homogenates onto EK (eel kidney) cell cultures induced giant cell formation. Subsequent passages produced a consistent and progressive cytopathic effect (CPE) in cell cultures. In this study, EP-1 cell cultures infected with EEHV (European eel herpesvirus) wer

Impact of endocrine hyperfunction and phosphate wasting on bone in McCune-Albright syndrome.

Skin dysplasia, as café-au-lait spots, bone fibrous dysplasia and peripheral endocrinopathies are the main clinical features of McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS). This illness is due to activating mutations of the Gsalpha protein and is spread with a mosaic pattern in affected tissues that consist of intermixed areas of normal and mutated cells. Peripheral endocrine secretion, free of hypothalamic pituitary control, is the hallmark of the endocrine syndromes: precocious puberty, Cushing's syndrome, hyperthyroidism and gigantism/acromegaly. In addition, phosphate wasting as hyperphosphaturia is of

Metastatic calcification of the nasal septum presenting as an intraoral mass: a case report with a review of the literature.

Metastatic calcification is a pathologic condition characterized by deposition of calcified product in otherwise normal tissues as a result of hyperphosphatemia with or without concurrent hypercalcemia. Metastatic calcification presenting clinically as an oral lesion is extremely rare. To date, only 7 cases of metastatic calcification involving the oral soft tissues have been described. This report describes a case of metastatic calcification of the nasal septum presenting as a mass of the anterior maxillary vestibule in a patient with end-stage renal disease. The case reported is only the sec

[Hematological disorder caused by a giant myoma of the uterus].

OBJECTIVES: Polycythaemia means an increase in the number of red blood cells and usually a corresponding increase in the haematocrit and in the quantity of haemoglobin. Regarding etiology, primary and secondary forms of polycythaemia can be distinguished. The primary form--polycythaemia vera--is caused by autonomous erythroblastic hyperplasia. Secondary polycythaemia--erythrocythosis--may arise as a consequence of erythropoietin (EP) overproduction due to tissue hypoxia. These changes may stimulate the EP synthesis in the kidneys. EP may also be produced in metaplastic cells. STUDY DESIGN: A

Chronic hypersecretion of luteinizing hormone in transgenic mice disrupts both ovarian and pituitary function, with some effects modified by the genetic background.

When the pituitary or hypothalamus becomes resistant to steroid negative feedback, a vicious cycle ensues, resulting in chronic hypersecretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary and steroids from the ovaries. In women, LH hypersecretion is implicated in infertility, miscarriages, and development of granulosa cell tumors. Progress in defining the underlying mechanisms of LH toxicity, however, has been limited by the lack of well-defined animal models. To that end, we have developed a new transgenic mouse model (alpha-LHbetaCTP) wherein LH hypersecretion occurs chronically and result

End-stage renal failure from renal amyloidosis of the AA type associated with giant lymph node hyperplasia (Castleman's disease).

A case of end-stage renal failure caused by renal amyloidosis of the AA type is reported. No chronic disease responsible for the deposition of reactive amyloid was detected until giant lymph node hyperplasia of the angiofollicular type was identified in a mediastinal mass. Amyloid was found within the tumour mass and was characterized by immunochemistry with monoclonal antibodies to be of the AA type. Castleman's disease should be added to the list of chronic diseases endangering renal function by inducing the production and tissue deposition of secondary (AA) amyloid.

New entities, concepts, and questions in childhood tumor pathology.

There are major differences between tumors in children and adults, viz. the incidence of tumor types, the predisposition of certain organs and tissues (e.g. sympathetic nervous tissue, kidney, and soft tissues) to develop tumors, problems related to tumor classification, and the biologic behavior of childhood malignancies, which are usually characterized by high rates of proliferation activity. A large number of new entities, especially in soft tissue tumors, have been published over the past years, including nodular mesothelial hyperplasia, which is a tumor-like lesion derived from peritoneal

Renal thrombotic microangiopathy associated with multicentric Castleman's disease. Report of two cases.

Castleman's disease (also called giant lymph node hyperplasia or angiofollicular lymph node hyperplasia) is a clinicopathological entity of unknown etiology. Two histologic patterns of lymph nodes are classically recognized: the hyaline-vascular and plasma-cell variants. Recently, multicentric Castleman's disease has emerged as a separate clinical entity manifested primarily by generalized lymphadenopathy and systemic manifestations, such as thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, hepatosplenomegaly, altered liver function tests, central nervous system alterations, and autoimmune manifestations. Giant extra-adrenal myelolipoma.

Myelolipomas are rare, benign tumors composed in varying proportions of adipose tissue and hematopoietic cells. Myelolipomas are typically found in the adrenal gland, but uncommon cases of extra-adrenal sites have been reported, primarily presacrally. Extra-adrenal myelolipomas must be distinguished from masses of extramedullary hematopoiesis, which are also composed of hematopoietic elements but are associated with anemia and marked bone marrow hyperplasia. Also, if the distinction between extra-adrenal myelolipomas and malignant tumors such as liposarcoma were made before surgery, an invasiv

The presence of giant granules in the juxtaglomerular cells of beige rats may affect plasma renin activity and blood pressure.

Chediak-Higashi syndrome (CHS) is an autosomal recessive disorder, characterized histopathologically by giant granules in various cells. Since little is known about the juxtaglomerular (JG) cells of CHS, the present study was undertaken as a morphological investigation of the JG cell of Beige rats, which were found to be a new animal model of CHS. In addition, we measured the blood pressure and plasma renin activity. The blood pressure of Beige rats is similar to that of DA rats, the mother strain of Beige rats. However, the plasma renin activity of Beige rats increases with age, whereas that

Thirty-three out of 39 cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) infected with SIVsm (strain SMM-3) developed various pathologies similar to those seen in human AIDS. Lymphadenopathy was frequently seen (72%) and was characterized by hyperplasia followed by involution of follicle/germinal centres due to follicular dendritic cell (FDC) destruction corresponding to the degree of immunodeficiency. Various organs such as the lungs, liver, central nervous system, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, cardiovascular system and adrenals showed histopathological changes with prominent monocyte/macrophage an

Pathology of osseous and genitourinary lesions of Proteus syndrome.

A male patient followed from the age of 3 to 25 years was eventually diagnosed as having Proteus syndrome. He was born with linear epidermal nevi of the neck and forearm and presented with macrodactyly of the right hand and progressive hemihypertrophy of the right lower limb recurring after multiple reduction operations. The bone ends showed disorderly overgrowth of hyaline and fibrocartilage mixed with collagen and bone, and early differential diagnoses included Ollier's disease. The child also had vertebral anomalies, scoliosis, a bony protrusion of the cranial vertex, and strabismus. In the
