NTP Toxicology and Carcinogenesis Studies of Pentachloroanisole (CAS No. 1825-21-4) in F344 Rats and B6C3F1 Mice (Feed Studies).

Pentachloroanisole is a chlorinated aromatic compound which is widely distributed at low levels in the environment and in food products. Formation of pentachloroanisole in the environment may result from the degradation of structurally related, commercially important, ubiquitous chlorinated aromatic compounds such as pentachlorophenol and pentachloronitrobenzene which are known rodent toxins or carcinogens. Toxicology and carcinogenesis studies were conducted by administering pentachloroanisole (>99% pure) in corn oil by gavage to groups of male and female F344/N rats and B6C3F1 mice for 16 da

Leptospirosis in equine fetuses, stillborn foals, and placentas.

Leptospirosis was diagnosed in 51 equine fetuses and 16 stillborn foals with gestational ages from 3 1/2 to 11 months. Diagnosis was based on one or more of the following: positive fetal antibody titer, positive fluorescent antibody test, demonstration of spirochetes in kidney and/or placental sections stained by the Warthin-Starry technique, high leptospiral titers in aborting mares, or isolation of Leptospira spp. from fetal organs. Gross lesions were observed in 80.3% of the fetuses, stillborn foals, and placentas. Gross placental lesions included nodular cystic allantoic masses, edema, are

[A case of giant prostatic calculi].

A 83-year-old man was admitted because of fever and painful swelling of the right scrotal contents on January 23, 1989. Kidney-ureter-bladder X-ray (KUB) showed multiple big prostatic calculi which were compressed postero-laterally by benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) according to the CT film. UCG film revealed urethral stricture in the anterior urethra. He was diagnosed as having right epididymitis, urethral stricture, BPH and giant prostatic calculi. He was treated with right orchiectomy, urethral bougie and suprapubic prostatectomy with removal of the calculi. The total weight of the prosta

[Twenty-eight day repeated dose toxicity test of m-nitroaniline in F344 rats].

A twenty-eight day repeated oral dose toxicity test of m-nitroaniline (m-NA) was carried out in male and female F344 rats at dose levels of 0, 15, 50 or 170 mg/kg/day. Animals of both sexes were divided into 6 groups, each consisting of 30 animals, 4 groups being used for the 28 days dosing study and the remainder for investigation of subsequent recovery. Inhibition of body weight gain, and induction of cyanosis and methemoglobinemia were observed in the highest dose groups of both sexes, but there were no animal mortalities. Testicular atrophy was evident but there was no effect on the ovarie

Morphologic findings in children with acquired immune deficiency syndrome: pathogenesis and clinical implications.

The lesions observed in biopsy and autopsy material from children with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) can be divided into three pathogenetic categories: primary lesions related to infection by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (e.g., lymphoreticular system and brain); lesions due to the sequelae of HIV infection (e.g., opportunistic infections, pulmonary lymphoid lesions, etc.); and lesions of undetermined pathogenesis (e.g., renal lesions, cardiomyopathy, etc.). The role of morphologic studies in AIDS in understanding the pathogenesis of the various lesions and their clinical

Membranous nephropathy associated with giant lymph node hyperplasia. A case report with histological and ultrastructural studies.

A young woman presented with nephrotic syndrome due to membranous nephropathy and a localized form of giant lymph node hyperplasia (Castleman's disease) occurring as a large intra-abdominal mass. Five months after surgical removal of the mass, only mild proteinuria persisted. Twenty months later a second kidney biopsy showed a near-normal morphology. Six years later the patient was free of symptoms and had normal urinalysis. Reviewing the pertinent literature, it seems to be the first case of a biopsy-proven cure of membranous nephropathy in a patient with membranous nephropathy and Castleman'

[A case of idiopathic plasmacytic lymphadenopathy with polyclonal hyperimmunoglobulinemia associated with chronic renal failure].

A rare case of idiopathic plasmacytic lymphadenopathy with polyclonal hyperimmunoglobulinemia (IPL) associated with chronic renal failure was described in this report. A 73-year-old male was admitted and diagnosed as IPL. IPL is proposed by Mori et al. in 1980. Clinical entity of IPL is (1) Polyclonal hyperimmunoglobulinemia (2) Systemic Lymphadenopathy characterized by remarkable mature plasmacytosis without atypism and by no destruction of the structures. (3) All disease with polyclonal hyperimmunoglobulinemia can be excluded. In this patient, physical findings showed enlarged lymph nodes (1

Multicentric giant lymph node hyperplasia with ascites and double cancers, an autopsy case.

A 70-year-old man, diagnosed to have multicentric giant lymph node hyperplasia (MGLNH) of the plasma cell type by postmortem examination, had double cancers of the thyroid and kidney, as well as a large amount of ascites and persistent serositis. Serum immunoelectrophoresis showed monoclonal IgG (lambda). Using the paired immunofluorescent technique, monoclonal plasma cell proliferation was observed on the section of a lymph node. The cause of the ascites was speculated to be the combined influence of peritonitis, renal dysfunction and obstruction of abdominal lymphatic ducts. Occurrence of do

[An exceptional cause of renal colic. Castleman's tumor. Lymphonodular angiofollicular hyperplasia].

The case of a 38-year-old man with renal colic due to compression by an abdominopelvic mass is reported. Histologic examination of the mass led to the diagnosis of giant lymph node hyperplasia or Castleman disease. Surgical removal of the lesion ensured complete recovery with no recurrence after 32 months follow up. Giant lymph node hyperplasia usually develops in the mediastinum, but superficial and abdominopelvic forms are seen occasionally. Pathogenic hypotheses are discussed. Outcome is usually favorable following surgical excision but rare multifocal forms with a potentially poor prognosi

Glomerular lesions in lymphomas and leukemias.

Renal lesions in lymphoid malignancies are rare, with most lesions observed in association with Hodgkin's disease. In two large series of patients with Hodgkin's disease, only 0.4 percent had minimal-change lesion whereas 0.1 percent had amyloidosis. The non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and leukemias comprise large and heterogeneous groups with equally diverse renal lesions. As in Hodgkin's disease, the most frequent lesion is minimal-change nephrotic syndrome. Also recognized are rare reports of renal disease associated with the atypical lymphoid proliferations of angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy, g

[A case of giant hydronephrosis and a review of 324 cases in the literature].

A case of giant hydronephrosis due to ureteropelvic junction obstruction in an 18-year-old boy is reported. The patient had been told to undergo an operation for the left hydronephrosis at 2 years of age. However, he stayed away from hospital until he presented at our clinic with nausea caused by a large abdominal mass. Radiological evaluation revealed a left giant hydronephrosis with no function and slight compensatory hypertrophy in the right kidney. Left nephrectomy was performed and the pelvic capacity was approximately 7,700 ml. Histopathological examination showed muscular hyperplasia at

The Perlman syndrome: familial renal dysplasia with Wilms tumor, fetal gigantism and multiple congenital anomalies.

We describe a familial syndrome of renal dysplasia, Wilms tumor, hyperplasia of the endocrine pancreas, fetal gigantism, multiple congenital anomalies and mental retardation. This condition was previously described by Perlman et al [1973, 1975] and we propose to call it the "Perlman syndrome." It appears to be transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait. The possible relationships between dysplasia, neoplasia and malformation are discussed.

Renal disease in the geriatric patient.

Although there are physiologic and anatomic changes of the kidney that occur almost universally with aging, no specific kidney disease that is totally confined to the geriatric population has been identified. Kidney diseases that predominate in the elderly include vascular and atheroembolic diseases, obstructive nephropathies, nephropathies secondary to certain systemic diseases, and intrinsic kidney disease. An understanding of the age-related changes of renal architecture and function is necessary to distinguish them from actual diseases that affect the aged kidney. These changes and their p

Polycystic kidney disease: a predominance of giant nephrons.

Polycystic kidney disease is a bilateral disorder that affects approximately 200,000-400,000 persons in the United States. The most common form of the disease is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait (ADPKD). It typically causes renal insufficiency by the fifth or sixth decade of life. The disease is characterized by the progressive enlargement of a portion of renal tubule segments (proximal, distal, loop of Henle, collecting duct). The tubules enlarge from a normal diameter of 40 microns to several centimeters in diameter, causing marked gross and microscopic anatomic distortion. The cause

The morphological consequences of thermosurgery.

Immediately after electric coagulation or laser surgery, black-brown carbonizations were observed on the surface of different human tissue biopsies and in the experimental studies of rat organs. In specimens of liver, urinary bladder, and prostate coagulation necrosis developed, followed by a cell-rich granulation tissue with giant cells of the foreign body type. More than 3 months after the thermoinjury the granulomas could still be demonstrated in the tissue. After 6-8 weeks postoperatively (p.o.) a fibrous scar tissue began to develop. [Necrotizing myelopathy and neoplasms: clinico-pathological report of 2 cases].

Two clinico-pathological cases of necrotic myelopathies with a distant malignancy are presented. The first patient had histiocytic medullary reticulosis and the second one had a renal cell carcinoma. The authors referred to other similar cases found in the literature. In both patients the pathological features in the spinal cord were similar to the other cases reported, but in their first case they found an intense inflammatory reaction and hyperplasia of astrocytes into bizarre giant forms. The cause of necrotizing myelopathy associated with neoplasms remain unknown. The authors think that th

Polyclonal lymphadenopathy presenting as plasma cell leukemia with reversible renal insufficiency.

A case is reported of an elderly patient with generalized lymphadenopathy who, at presentation, showed a blood and bone marrow picture suggestive of plasma cell leukemia, polyclonal hypergammaglobulinemia restricted almost exclusively to IgA, and severe renal insufficiency. Treatment with melphalan and prednisone produced a complete remission that lasted only 1 month. A second partial remission was obtained, but the patient eventually died of heart failure. The pathological picture of the lymph nodes and spleen was intermediate between that of angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy (AIL) and of th

A variant of the Wiedemann-Beckwith syndrome.

The following combination of findings were established by histological examination of biopsy or autopsy material in an 11-day-old male baby: congenital mesoblastic nephroma, nodular renal blastema, dysgenetic pancreatic cyst, "cytomegaly" of the adrenal cortex, hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the islets of Langerhans, hypoplasia of the thymus and the lymphatic tissue. Since some of these changes constitute the characteristic histological findings in the Wiedemann-Beckwith syndrome and the remainder can be readily reconciled with it, the assignment of this case to this syndrome is discussed. [Hyperparathyroidism].

The overproduction of parathyroid hormone as caused by a simple hyperplasia or an adenoma leads to pathological changes in various organs which are termed primary hyperparathyroidism. The blood phosphates increase in case of long-standing disturbances of the metabolism, e.g. chronic renal insufficiency. In this way and due to other causes, the production of parathyroid hormone is increased. The resultant clinical picture is termed secondary hyperparathyroidism. Both forms are associated with osseous changes also in the maxillofacial skeleton. Tertiary hyperparathyroidism may develop from secon
