Impact of polycystic kidney disease on outcomes after renal transplantation: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) represents one of the most prevalent inherited renal disorders and constitutes the fourth leading etiology of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). While renal transplantation remains the optimal therapeutic intervention for ESKD, existing evidence regarding post-transplant survival rates and graft loss in PKD recipients remains contentious. This systematic review incorporated studies from PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases, with a preregistered protocol on PROSPERO (CRD420251002570). We evaluated the impact of PKD on post-transplant outcomes through comparative an

Variation in Definitions of Kidney Abnormality in Patients with Spina Bifida: A Systematic Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: We systematically reviewed the variability in definitions of kidney abnormality (KA) outcomes in individuals with spina bifida (SB). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic scoping review was conducted using MEDLINE, Embase™, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycInfo®, Web of Science™ and ClinicalTrials.gov for articles from time of database inception to September 2020. No language or patient age restrictions were applied. Primary research articles involving individuals with SB where KA was assessed as an outcome were included. Means of assessing KA and defining KA severity were abstracted. RE

An update of the aetiological factors involved in molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: To systematically review the aetiological factors associated with molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH). To this day, the aetiology remains unknown. Determining risk factors would allow risk assessment and enhance early diagnosis of MIH in young patients. The aim was to assess, evaluate and summarise the relationship between MIH and reported aetiological hypotheses. METHODS: Electronic database searches of MEDLINE, EMBASE, EBSCO, LILACS and Cochrane Library were conducted. Authors conformed to PRISMA guidelines. Studies were screened, data extracted, assessment of risk of bias and c

A kidney-disease gene panel allows a comprehensive genetic diagnosis of cystic and glomerular inherited kidney diseases.

Molecular diagnosis of inherited kidney diseases remains a challenge due to their expanding phenotypic spectra as well as the constantly growing list of disease-causing genes. Here we develop a comprehensive approach for genetic diagnosis of inherited cystic and glomerular nephropathies. Targeted next generation sequencing of 140 genes causative of or associated with cystic or glomerular nephropathies was performed in 421 patients, a validation cohort of 116 patients with previously known mutations, and a diagnostic cohort of 207 patients with suspected inherited cystic disease and 98 patients

Outcomes of angioembolization and nephrectomy for renal angiomyolipoma associated with tuberous sclerosis complex: a real-world US national study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine outcomes of clinical procedures for renal angiomyolipoma associated with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) based on US national health claims databases. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study selected two cohorts of TSC patients, who underwent either embolization or nephrectomy (either partial or complete) for renal angiomyolipoma in the years from 2000 through 2011. Based on claims diagnosis codes, we estimated the prevalence rates of 10 angiomyolipoma-related conditions and 50 embolization- or nephrectomy-related conditions in the pre- and post-baseline periods respec

Primary renal disease in young adults with renal failure.

BACKGROUND: No specific data have been published on primary renal disease (PRD) in young adults with end-stage renal failure (ESRF). For children, congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) account for 50% of renal failure and other congenital and familial disease comprise 20%. This remains true for teenage children in paediatric registries. METHODS: To investigate the causes of ESRF in young adults, the UK Renal Registry data for the period 2000-2006 have been reviewed and PRD reported for all aged 18-39 years. For comparison, US Renal Data System (USRDS) results are av

What do we know about chronic renal failure in young adults? I. Primary renal disease.

Paediatric registries worldwide report that congenital abnormalities of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) account for approximately 50% of end-stage renal failure and other congenital and familial diseases account for another 20% (together 70%). Does the same hold true for young adults? Almost nothing has been published about primary renal disease in adults who have reached end-stage before 30 years of age. I have reviewed the UK renal registry (2000-2006) and the United States Renal Data System (USRDS) data base (2005) to answer this question. While paediatric registries have reduced the n

The clinical significance of an empty renal fossa on prenatal sonography.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize the significance of an empty renal fossa on prenatal sonography. METHODS: A hospital database was reviewed retrospectively to find all fetuses with an empty renal fossa diagnosed on prenatal sonography between 1989 and 2003. For each case, prenatal and postnatal data were recorded. RESULTS: Ninety-three fetuses had an empty renal fossa: 49 on the left, 41 on the right, and 3 unspecified. Forty-four fetuses were male and 29 were female. For 20, the sex was not recorded. The average gestational age at diagnosis was 29.5 weeks. Final diag

Adults with VATER association: long-term prognosis.

VATER "association" is a common condition, with the diagnosis typically based on a characteristic constellation of congenital anomalies. Reported long-term follow-up information on VATER association is limited, thus making it difficult to prognosticate the future of infants and children with this condition. Further, there are few data on how often the initial diagnosis of VATER association is correct. Some information has been published on growth deficiency and mental retardation, but these data are minimal [Bull et al., 1985; Mapstone et al., 1986; Weaver et al., 1986] and for the most part l

Autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease: the clinical experience in North America.

OBJECTIVE: We designed a longitudinal clinical database for autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD), recruited patients from pediatric nephrology centers in the United States and Canada, and examined their clinical morbidities and survival characteristics. We initially targeted enrollment to children who were born and diagnosed after January 1, 1990, so as to capture a cohort that is representative of ARPKD patients born in the last decade. When a significant number of older ARPKD patients were also referred, we extended our database to include all patients who met our inclusion

[Factors related to the QT prolongation in chronic renal failure].

QT prolongation, a risk factor for arrhythmia and cardiac death, is observed in uremic patients. Though hypocalcemia, autonomic nerve dysfunction and cardiac hypertrophy are assumed to cause the uremic QT prolongation, the exact mechanism remains unspecified. We therefore examined factors related to the QT interval in chronic renal failure (CRF). Corrected QT interval (QTc) was significantly prolonged in CRF just before the induction of dialysis therapy (group A) compared with nephrotic syndrome with the intact or mildly impaired renal function (group B). QTc was also prolonged in acute renal

Renal transplantation in Down syndrome: a report of the North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Cooperative Study.

There are few published reports on renal transplantation in patients with Down syndrome and renal failure. By means of a questionnaire sent to participating renal centers of the North American Pediatric Renal Transplant Cooperative Study, this study identified 14 Down syndrome patients who received renal transplants between January 1987 and November 1995. There were 6 males and 8 females between the ages of 6 and 21 years. Of the group, 8 patients were Caucasian and 6 were of African American ethnicity. Four patients had a primary diagnosis of obstructive uropathy, two had hypoplastic/dysplast

The cause of death in Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome.

The certificates of death of 14 deceased patients with Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl (LMBB) syndrome, in which retinal dystrophy is dominant feature, were review. Death occurred at a considerably younger age than in the general population. Renal disease was noted as primary or contributing cause of death in 7 cases with the diagnoses: cyst of the kidney, renal sclerosis, renal failure, proteinuria, renal disease unspecified and malignant hypertension with renal involvement. It is concluded that renal involvement is characteristic of individuals with LMBB syndrome and seems to reduce life expectan

[Evidence for association between renal cell carcinomas and renal cystic diseases: nationwide survey in Japan].

OBJECTIVE: A scanty evidence previously reported regarding renal cell carcinomas occurring in association with renal cystic diseases prompted us to conduct a nationwide survey in July 1991. METHODS: A total of 507 hospitals responded to the questionnaire inquiring the clinical and pathological characteristics of renal cell carcinoma associated with renal cystic diseases over the previous 2 years. RESULTS: Renal cystic diseases were identified in 223 (3.9%) of 5,721 patients with renal cell carcinoma. The patients consisted of 181 men and 42 women who had a mean age of 55.2 +/- 12.5 years (SD

Congenital malformations and maternal consumption of benzodiazepines: a case-control study.

This study assessed potential teratogenic properties of benzodiazepine (BZD) intake during early pregnancy. Four neonatal diagnoses of congenital malformations (embryopathy and fetopathy, unspecified; unspecified congenital malformations of the nervous system; cleft palate and cleft lip; congenital malformations of the urinary tract) were selected. The authors' previous clinical experience had shown these diagnoses to be characteristic of infants born to mothers with excessive intake of BZD in early pregnancy. The selected diagnoses were present in 25 of 10,646 liveborn infants (2.3 per 1000)
