Fractional exhaled nitric oxide is a non-invasive disease activity marker of IgG4-related disease.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the potential of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) value in patients with IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) as a non-invasive disease activity marker. METHODS: Patients fulfilling the 2019 ACR/EULAR classification criteria of IgG4-RD were enrolled. All patients who had never received oral glucocorticoids underwent FeNO measurement and computed tomography. Disease activity was evaluated using the IgG4-RD responder index (IgG4-RI). The cutoff for FeNO was set at 36 parts per billion (ppb), based on a Japanese normal upper limit. Spearman's rank correlation was used to

Deep Vein Thrombosis in an 11-Year-Old Child With Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Case Report.

Tuberculosis (TB) induces a systemic inflammatory response that can increase thrombotic risk, making venous thrombosis an uncommon but significant complication, especially in children. We present the case of an 11-year-old girl undergoing treatment for pleuro-pulmonary TB who developed acute deep vein thrombosis of the lower limb early during therapy. The diagnosis was established through clinical assessment and imaging, and the patient responded well to anticoagulation while continuing her TB treatment. This case underscores the need for clinicians to remain vigilant for thrombotic complicati

PTEN-Long-mediated molecular therapy: current evidences and future perspectives.

PTEN-Long (PTEN-L) is a translational variant of the tumor suppressor PTEN, characterized by a unique N-terminal 173-amino acid extension that confers its secreted and membrane-permeable properties. As a constitutively active phosphatase, PTEN-L retains core lipid phosphatase activity to antagonize the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway and regulates PINK1/Parkin-mediated mitophagy via its protein phosphatase function. It participates in diverse pathophysiological processes, acting as a tumor suppressor in non-small cell lung cancer, glioblastoma, and so on, while exerting protective effects in metabolic a

Symptomatic Sclerosing Pneumocytoma of Lung: A Diagnostic Challenge with Diverse Morphological Patterns.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Sclerosing pneumocytoma (SP), formerly termed sclerosing hemangioma, is a rare benign lung neoplasm often detected incidentally. Its histological diversity and dual cell population frequently complicate diagnosis, particularly in small biopsies. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 22-year-old female presenting with cough, right-sided chest pain, and dyspnoea for three months. Imaging revealed a well-defined, heterogeneously enhancing right middle lobe mass. Clinical and radiological impressions favored bronchial adenoma or carcinoid tumor. CT-guided biopsy suggested adeno

The Impact of Isoniazid Preventive Therapy on Tuberculosis Infection and Disease Progression.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) causes major morbidity and mortality among children worldwide. Isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) protects against progression to TB disease, but its effect on preventing new TB infection remains uncertain. METHODS: We conducted a longitudinal cohort study in Lima, Peru, enrolling adults with microbiologically confirmed pulmonary TB and their household contacts (HHCs). We assessed HHCs at baseline and 6 months for TB infection using tuberculin skin testing (TST) and for TB disease through clinical evaluation. We assessed two outcomes in relation to IPT initiation

Pathological characterization of the main infectious bovine abortions in Argentina.

Infectious abortion is a major cause of reproductive loss in cattle, yet the diagnosis remains challenging. In this study, we evaluated the gross and microscopic lesions of bovine fetuses aborted due to the main infectious agents in Argentina. Clear pathogen-specific patterns were identified. Neospora caninum was strongly associated with central nervous system (CNS) and cardiac inflammation, whereas Campylobacter fetus and Brucella abortus predominantly produced bronchointerstitial pneumonia. Leptospira spp. consistently affected hepatic and renal tissues and was associated with marked portal

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency associated with increased risk of venous thromboembolism: a nationwide cohort study in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Mechanistic investigations suggest that alpha-1 antitrypsin may influence hemostatic processes; however, whether alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is associated with an elevated risk of venous thromboembolism is unclear. OBJECTIVES: We tested whether alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is associated with venous thromboembolisms in 2 large independent cohorts. METHODS: In a nationwide nested cohort of 3046 individuals with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and 29,742 controls without it matched for sex, age, and municipality, we recorded admissions and deaths due to pulmonary embolism and ad

The role of chloride ions in serotonin transport.

The human serotonin (5-HT+) transporter SERT facilitates 5-HT+ transport into cells by coupling it to Na+ symport and K+ antiport. Although extracellular Cl- is also essential for transport, Cl- cotransport has been disputed, raising questions about the role of Cl- ions and why they are required. We show that Cl- gradients do not impact 5-HT+ accumulation, indicating that Cl- does not provide a driving force for uptake and arguing against stoichiometric Cl- symport. The presence of Cl- had only a small effect on Na+-mediated cytoplasmic pathway closure but markedly reduced the accessibility of

Perioperative Care of Cancer Patients Treated with Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors: Current Evidence and Clinical Considerations-A Scoping Review.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have moved from the metastatic setting into neoadjuvant, adjuvant, and fully perioperative strategies across several solid tumors. This shift has created a new clinical interface between medical oncology, surgery, anesthesia, pathology and postoperative care because immune activation may improve pathological response and survival while also generating immune-related adverse events (irAEs) that mimic or aggravate perioperative complications. Methods: We conducted a scoping review according to PRISMA-ScR. PubMed/MEDLINE and Web of Science were sear

Mitochondrial metabolic reprogramming and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) dynamic balance: Dual-axis regulatory mechanisms and therapeutic prospects for acute lung injury repair.

Acute lung injury (ALI) and its severe form, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), are common critical illnesses, with few effective therapies targeting their core pathological mechanisms. Current research confirms that mitochondrial dysfunction and excessive formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) play important roles in the occurrence and progression of ALI. Mitochondrial metabolic abnormalities can increase reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and promote mitochondrial deoxyribonucleic acid (mtDNA) liberation, both of which may participate in the initiation and amplific

Functional Characterization of Putative Novel MicroRNA-1133 in the Antioxidant Effects of Metformin in Hyperglycemia-Induced Endothelial Cells.

Diabetes mellitus induces endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress, contributing to the development of vascular complications. Although metformin exerts well-established vasculoprotective and antioxidant effects, the molecular mechanisms underlying these actions remain incompletely understood. Novel miR-1133 was previously identified as a metformin-responsive putative microRNA (miRNA), and bioinformatic analysis identified PIK3CA as a biologically plausible candidate target for further investigation. This study investigated the functional significance of novel miR-1133 in the antioxidant e
