Umbilical Sebaceous Cyst Mimicking Infected Urachal Sinus.

UNLABELLED: In addition to the most likely diagnoses for umbilical signs in adults (umbilical hernia, metastatic tumour, endometriosis, congenital abnormalities such as umbilical-urachal sinus and gallstones retained or spilled at the umbilicus), the differential diagnosis should also include epidermoid cyst arising from the skin of the umbilicus. We describe the case of a young man who presented with a persistent umbilical discharge which was initially thought to be umbilical-urachal sinus, but later found to be a sebaceous cyst. LEARNING POINTS: Umbilical sebaceous cysts are rarebut should

Laparoendoscopic Single-Site Surgery for Urachal Remnants: A Single-Center Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Urachal remnants are relatively rare. Generally, urachal remnants are detected in young people, and the removed specimen is small, comprising a good indication for laparoscopic surgery. Laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS) for urachal remnants is considered to be safe and result in an excellent cosmetic outcome. Therefore, we report our single-center experience with LESS for urachal remnants. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 30 patients with urachal remnants who underwent LESS from January 2011 to December 2017. The patients' characteristics, surgical data, postoperat

Resection of urachal anomalies in dogs with recurrent lower urinary tract disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether surgical removal of urachal anomalies improves the outcomes of dogs with recurrent lower urinary tract disease (LUTD) and bacterial urinary tract infection (BUTI). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Thirty-three dogs with urachal anomalies and recurrent LUTD or BUTI. METHODS: Medical records of dogs with LUTD or BUTI and a diagnosis of urachal anomaly treated by partial cystectomy were reviewed. A minimum follow-up of 9 months was required for inclusion. RESULTS: Median age at onset of clinical signs was 12 months (range, 1 month to 10 years). Urach

Long term follow-up in a patient with prune-belly syndrome - a care compliant case report.

RATIONALE: Malformative uropathies represent a major cause of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in children. Genitourinary system is the most frequent and sever affected in Prune-Belly syndrome cases. That is why the findings of early diagnosis and vigilant monitoring for these situations remain a major challenge for the medical team. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present the clinical course of a 10 years old child with diagnosis of Prune-Belly syndrome. A urinary tract abnormality was suspected starting 25 weeks of gestation, when a routine ultrasound showed oligohydramnios, increased size urinary bladder

Ultrasound findings of urachal anomalies. A series of interesting cases.

AIMS: This study's aim is to present the specific ultrasonography (US) findings of a series of urachus anomalies. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven patients with suspected urachal anomalies underwent US scanning initially prior to the surgery and the features of images were reviewed respectively. The clinical data and pathologic results were collected also. RESULTS: US successfully diagnosed urachal anomalies in 5 patients (5/7, 71.4%) and failed to diagnose in 2 patients (2/7, 28.6%). Patent urachus showed a tubule between the umbilicus and bladder; urachal sinus was a blind focal dilatation at t

Imaging of urachal anomalies.

Urachal anomalies are classified into four types depending on the level of persistence of the embryonic urachal remnants between the urinary bladder and the umbilicus: patent urachus, umbilical-urachal sinus, urachal cyst, and vesico-urachal diverticulum. Due to the increasing use of cross-sectional imaging, urachal anomalies are frequently detected as incidental findings. Imaging plays a pivotal role in the initial diagnosis, evaluation of complications, treatment follow-up, and long-term surveillance of patients with urachal anomalies. Different urachal anomalies demonstrate characteristic i

Suprapubic versus prepubic sinus: a literature review.

Urachal sinus usually presents with umbilical discharge and the opening can rarely be located between the umbilicus and the symphysis pubis and the so called suprapubic sinus (SPS). There is another different entity of cases reported in literature with a similar presentation but with an opening anywhere between the umbilicus and symphysis pubis but differs from SPS in the pathway of the tract and the epithelial lining. We report a case of a 2-year-old boy presenting with a prepubic sinus that was managed with surgical excision. After a thorough literature review, we compare our case to other p

Surgical management of urachal remnants in children: open versus laparoscopic approach: A STROBE-compliant retrospective study.

Urachal remnants (UR) represent a failure in the obliteration of the allantois, which connects the bladder to the umbilicus, at birth. Surgical management of UR in children is controversial. The traditional surgical approach involves a semicircular intraumbilical incision or a lower midline laparotomy. Recently, many reports have supported the laparoscopic approach (LA) for removing UR. However, there is a paucity of data comparing the benefits of LA those of the open approach (OA).We retrospectively reviewed all children (aged ≤16 years) with UR who underwent surgical procedures. Age at surge

Prenatally diagnosed patent urachus with umbilical cord cyst and early surgical intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Description of rare diagnosis of patent urachus. DESIGN: Case report. SETTING: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 2nd Faculty of Medicine and Faculty Hospital Motol Prague. CASE REPORT: Patent urachus is a rare diagnosis, which in this case was detected prenatally by ultrasound. Involution of the urachus is not fully completed upon birth, therefore in cases of small persisting communication between the urinary bladder and the umbilicus conservative approach and waiting for spontaneous closure is usually chosen. In our case surgery treatment has chosen as a prevention of uri

Management of Congenital Urethral Strictures In Infants. Case Series.

PURPOSE: Infra-vesical obstruction is uncommon in infants and generally due to urethral valves. Congenital urethral strictures (CUS), instead, defined as a concentric narrowing of the urethral lumen, are exceedingly rare in infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed our experience with 7 patients treated at our institution for CUS <age of 1-year. The study is a retrospective review of 7 patients treated for CUS diagnosed <age 1-year during a 10-year period. RESULT: In a single patient, the urethral stricture was an isolated condition, 3 had a Prune Belly Syndrome (PBS) and the remaining 3 h

Prolapsed bladder following rupture of patent urachal cyst, mimicking bladder exstrophy: a case report and literature review.

A 26-year-old pregnant woman was diagnosed with fetal bladder prolapse following rupture of a patent urachus/urachal cyst, based on the finding of cyst disappearance with replacement with an infra-umbilical, extra-abdominal solid soft-tissue mass, mimicking bladder exstrophy. The neonatal findings confirmed the prenatal diagnosis. The baby was healthy and had a successful surgical correction. This report provides clues to differentiating ruptured bladder prolapse from bladder exstrophy as follows: (1) well-documented urachal cyst with urine-filled mass in the early gestation, (2) development o

Urachal cyst with xanthogranulomatous cystitis: A rare case report.

An urachal cyst is a sinus remaining from the allantois during embryogenesis which is rarely manifested in adults. The urachus is an embryologic remnant which degenerates after the birth. Defective obliteration of the urachus leads to urachal abnormalities. Urachal cyst is a rare pathology in adult women, and this pathology should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen. Xanthogranulomatous cystitis (XC) is a benign disease of unknown etiology. The clinical manifestations of these are nonspecific such as lower abdominal pain, umbilical discharge with occasional hematuria.

Umbilical resection during laparoscopic surgery for urachal remnants.

INTRODUCTION: Because urachal remnants are rare, no standard therapeutic guidelines have been established for this lesion. In recent years, laparoscopic surgery (LS) has been performed by many surgeons and urologists to treat urachal remnants. The prevention of postoperative umbilical infection and late malignant transformation are major issues in the treatment of urachal remnants. Adequate resection of the urachal epithelial tissue is required, and therefore, umbilical resection (UR) is performed. We retrospectively assessed the feasibility of this modality for urachal remnants by examining c

Umbilicus-sparing laparoscopic versus open approach for treating symptomatic urachal remnants in adults.

The traditional surgical approach for removing a symptomatic urachal remnant is via a lower midline laparotomy and infraumbilical incision or a laparoscopic approach with umbilicoplasty. We reviewed our experience with umbilicus-sparing laparoscopic urachal remnant excision in a single-center study and evaluated its efficacy versus open approach (OA). This study was a retrospective study. Between March 2012 and September 2016, 32 consecutive patients with symptomatic urachal remnants underwent the umbilicus-sparing laparoscopic approach (USLA) (n = 17) or OA (n = 15). The efficacy, recovery, a

Urachal Remnants in Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department with Abdominal Pain.

BACKGROUND: Rare causes of abdominal pain include abnormalities of the urachus, including patent urachus and urachal cyst with or without infection. However, reviews discussing etiology of abdominal pain, even in children, may completely omit mention of urachal remnants. OBJECTIVES: Determine the incidence of symptomatic urachal remnants in patients presenting to the emergency department (ED), including common presenting findings and method of diagnosis. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of all patients presenting to the ED with abdominal pain who were diagnosed with uracha
