The urachus is a remnant of the urogenital sinus and allantois, which persists after antenatal involution. Despite its rudimentary postnatal presence, it can undergo metaplasia and tumor formation. Malignant transformation of the urachus is rare. However, these tumors can recur and develop pseudomyxoma peritonei. Thus, they should remain on the differential for any female patient with a pelvic mass. A 28-year old G9P2062 presented at 8 weeks' gestation requesting pregnancy termination. On ultrasound, a single live intrauterine pregnancy was visualized. Also identified was a left-sided 8- × 7-

We report the case of a 17-year-old girl who presented to the accident and emergency department with dysuria and foul smelling, bloody discharge from her umbilicus. The definitive diagnosis was that of a patent urachus, which is a fistulous communication between the bladder and the umbilicus, usually diagnosed in early infancy. The incidence of a patent urachus is approximately 1 in 70,000 in the general population. It is highly likely that removal of a recent belly button piercing resulted in the acute presentation by completing the fistulous tract to the skin. This case is of clinical releva

BACKGROUND: The traditional surgical approach to the excision of persistent urachal remnants is a lower midline laparotomy or semicircular infraumbilical incision. The aim of this study is to report our experience with laparoscopic urachus excision as a minimally invasive diagnostic and surgical technique.
METHODS: This study was a prospective study involving patients who were diagnosed with persistent urachus and underwent laparoscopic excision. The morbidity, recovery, and outcomes of surgery were reviewed.
RESULTS: Fourteen patients (8 men) with a mean age of 22.8 ± 6.42 years underwent l

A female southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) calf presented with a patent urachus at 5 days of age. It was immobilized for examination and medical treatment was elected over surgical repair. Systemic antibiotics and topical treatment of the site by cleaning with chlorhexidine solution were followed by silver nitrate cautery. This animal required no further treatment and has reached 1 yr of age with no other medical problems. Although patent urachus is relatively common in domestic animals, especially horses, neither the problem nor its resolution are well documented in exotic

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal tract duplication is a rare malformation associated with the presence of additional segment of the fetal gut. The aim of this study was to retrospectively review clinical features and imaging findings in intraoperatively confirmed cases of gastrointestinal tract duplication in children.
MATERIAL/METHODS: The analysis included own material from the years 2002-2012. The analyzed group included 14 children, among them 8 boys and 6 girls. The youngest patient was diagnosed at the age of three weeks, and the oldest at 12 years of age.
RESULTS: The duplication cysts we

The incidence of congenital urachal, bladder, and cloacal anomalies is low. Urachal remnants are the result of failure or delay in obliteration of the allantois. Exstrophy of the bladder or cloaca can be diagnosed on prenatal ultrasonography and represent a deviation from the normal embryologic sequence. Persistent cloaca is an anomaly occurring in girls, in which a common cavity exists into which the intestinal, urinary, and reproductive tracts all open. It is also often diagnosed on prenatal imaging.

INTRODUCTION: The development of gastroschisis remains an area of controversy. Various theories have been proposed, but none has ever been supported by a thorough embryological study.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We herein report anatomical and microscopic observations of the developing abdominal wall and cord of embryos and fetuses, along with clinical features of gastroschisis.
RESULTS: It appears that the developing cord normally has two parts, a firm left-sided part formed by the vessels and urachus, and a thin right-sided pouch covering the intestinal loops (the 'physiological umbilical hernia

PURPOSE: We examined the presentation, diagnosis and management of radiologically detected pediatric urachal anomalies and assessed the risk of malignant degeneration.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our radiology database (2000 to 2012) was queried for all children younger than 18 years who were diagnosed with a urachal anomaly radiographically, and the operative database was used to determine those who underwent excision. Data collected included demographics, presenting symptoms, imaging modality and indication for excision. These data were compared to the Ontario Cancer Registry to determine the ri

Errors in urachal obliteration may result in 4 clinical anomalies: patent urachus, urachal cyst, urachal sinus, or vesicourachal diverticulum. Despite the fact that urachal cysts are one of the more common of these anomalies, most go undetected, presenting in the setting of infection. There are reports in the literature of cysts misdiagnosed as other inflammatory processes; however, the converse is reported with less frequency. We present the case of a 3-year-old girl who was admitted to our institution with a suspected urachal cyst. This was subsequently diagnosed as a granulomatous mass caus

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder primarily caused by pathogenic mutations in the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene. Some FAP cases are clinically diagnosed even in the absence of a family history. Both the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines (Version 3.2024) and the Japanese Society for Cancer of the Colon and Rectum Guidelines for the Clinical Practice of Hereditary Colorectal Cancer Guidelines (2020) recommend genetic testing for FAP cases without a family history; however, its implementation is limited due to ethical and economic consideration

PURPOSE: Remaining urachal anomalies are seldom found but can result in long-standing recurrent symptoms and repeated surgery. In this single-centre study, we evaluated the laparoscopic approach of excision of the urachus leaving the umbilicus untouched.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients were operated on for persisting symptomatic urachal anomalies between 1998 and 2011. Patients included 8 males and 13 females (mean 28.5 years, range 15-72 years). Patients' histories, surgical data and demographic data were prospectively collected and analysed. During follow-up, patients were evaluated using the

A 18-year-old man presented with fever and periumbilical nodule. Computed tomography (CT) showed complicated abscess of urachal remnant and laparoscopic surgery was performed transperitoneally via 3 ports. Laparoscopic excision of urachal remnant was first demonstrated in 1992 by Neufung et al, and in Japan first case was reported in 1998 by Ohmori et al. Some cases of laparoscopic surgery for urachal remnant were reported, but the surgical techniques, including port configuration, have not been standardized. In this case, we performed laparoscopic surgery with camera port in the umbilicus and

We report an infant who presented with a discharging single-lumen, tubular, and mucosa-lined umbilical mass and a large central abdominal mass, inferior to the umbilicus. At operation, the mass was discovered to be a prolapsed, open, and inflamed urachal sinus leading to a pyourachus. Primary total excision from dome of the bladder to the umbilicus led to smooth recovery with excellent results.

Prenatal ultrasonographic features of patent urachus consist in anechoic proximal cord cyst communicating with the bladder associated with large umbilicus. Distinction should be made with omphalocele and bladder extrophy. Spontaneous evolution leads to rupture during mid-trimester and bladder protrusion. Karyotyping is not mandatory in isolated typical cases. Early postnatal surgery is usually required.

Computer tomography through the kidneys, ureters and bladder (CT KUB) is the mainstay investigation of suspected renal tract calculi. However, several pathologies other than renal tract calculi can cause apparent urinary bladder calcification. We describe the case of a 45 year old man who presented with left sided renal colic. Prone CT KUB performed on admission revealed a calcified urachal remnant mimicking a urinary bladder calculus in the dependent portion of the urinary bladder, confirmed by reviewing the multi-planar reformatted images. This is the first reported case in the literature of

We report an otherwise well developing 2-year-old girl who presented with a urachal sinus with its opening located at the midline between umbilicus and the pubic symphysis. Diagnosis was made by ultrasound preoperatively, and confirmed during surgery. Additionally, columnar epithelium was found in the portion of sinus tract traversing the abdominal wall. Metaplasia of the sinus tract is worrisome, as urachal carcinomas have been traditionally characterized to result from this process.

OBJECTIVE: To shed light on the current controversy regarding the best treatment option for managing urachal anomalies in children.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective follow-up of a case series comprising 13 children who were diagnosed with urachal anomalies was performed. All cases were diagnosed between 2000 and 2011 and followed up at the Pediatric Urology Unit of San Cecilio University Hospital in Granada (Spain). Information about the baseline and follow-up variables was collected from clinical records.
RESULTS: Nine of the 13 patients were symptomatic (6 patients with urachal cysts
