Comparison of risk factors and different therapeutic options for ocular toxoplasmosis recurrence: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Ocular toxoplasmosis is a leading cause of vision impairment and is burdened by the risk of recurrence. This study, conducted at the University Hospital of Verona, aimed to identify potential risk factors associated with disease recurrence. MAIN BODY: A total of 86 patients were treated for ocular toxoplasmosis between 1996 and 2023, with 43 completing treatment and follow-up of at least 18 months after treatment. Patients were treated with one of two therapeutic options: either trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole or pyrimethamine-sulfametopyrazine. Over the study period, 21 patients ex

Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Associated With Ocular Toxoplasmosis Managed With Primary Scleral Buckling.

Purpose: To report the successful repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments (RRD) associated with ocular toxoplasmosis using scleral buckling alone in 2 young patients. Methods: Two cases were retrospectively reviewed. Results: The first patient was a 16-year-old girl with recurrent toxoplasma retinochoroiditis who developed a macula-on inferior RRD 10 weeks after her most recent inflammatory flare. She underwent repair with a 41/70 scleral buckle, cryotherapy, and subretinal fluid (SRF) drainage. At 1 year postoperatively, the retina remained attached with stable visual acuity (VA). The se

First Case of Congenital Toxoplasmosis After Maternal Reinfection in Colombia: Serotyping Evidence of Reinfection by Different Strains.

Herein, we report the first case of confirmed maternal reinfection in an immunocompetent woman, resulting in congenital toxoplasmosis in Colombia. The child was referred to an infectious disease pediatrician at 17 months of age because of strabismus and typical bilateral chorioretinitis scars with elevated immunoglobulin (Ig)G anti-Toxoplasma. The mother tested positive for Toxoplasma antibodies (IgG-positive and IgM-negative) in 2020. Four months before becoming pregnant in 2023, both IgG and IgM were positive. Serotyping indicated that the mother had antibodies against GRA6 types I and III s

Unilateral Panuveitis Secondary to Toxoplasmosis in an Immunocompromised Patient: A Case Report.

Panuveitis is a severe form of intraocular inflammation involving the anterior chamber, vitreous, retina, or choroid, with potential for significant visual morbidity. Differentiating between infectious and non-infectious aetiologies is particularly challenging in immunosuppressed patients, where clinical features may overlap. We report the case of a 54-year-old male patient with rheumatoid arthritis on systemic immunosuppression who presented with unilateral right eye panuveitis. Multimodal imaging was essential in characterising disease activity and monitoring response to treatment. Although

Ocular toxoplasmosis in Latin American and European patients: clinical characteristics, visual outcomes, and recurrence patterns.

BACKGROUND: Ocular toxoplasmosis is the most common cause of posterior uveitis worldwide and a major cause of visual impairment. Previous studies suggest that the disease may follow a more aggressive clinical course in patients from Latin America; however, direct comparative evidence between geographic populations remains limited. This study aimed to characterize the clinical, serological, and imaging features of a multiethnic cohort of patients with ocular toxoplasmosis and to assess differences according to geographic origin. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed including 144

Targeting ferroptosis in ocular diseases: mechanisms, clinical implications, and therapeutic horizons.

Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of regulated cell death driven by lipid peroxidation, has been increasingly implicated in selected ocular diseases, although its causal relevance varies across disease entities. The retina and retinal pigment epithelium are biologically susceptible to ferroptosis-related injury because of their high oxygen demand, abundant polyunsaturated lipids, mitochondrial activity, light exposure, and tightly regulated iron handling. This review summarizes core mechanisms of ocular ferroptosis, including iron uptake and export, glutathione-glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4

Ocular toxoplasmosis in the immunocompromised patient.

Ocular toxoplasmosis is a common infectious eye disease caused by the ubiquitous parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, and the leading cause of posterior uveitis in most populations worldwide. For the growing number of individuals living with some form of immunocompromise, T. gondii often represents an aggressive ocular pathogen. To demonstrate how an impaired immune system may impact the course and outcomes of ocular toxoplasmosis, the clinical descriptions of 276 immunocompromised patients, published across 109 reports in the medical literature, were compiled, and relevant epidemiological and immunol

Under-recognized yet clinically relevant: A hospital-based study of Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity in Bihar, India.

Toxoplasma gondii is a globally prevalent protozoan parasite with marked regional variation in seroprevalence and clinical expression, yet data from eastern India, particularly Bihar, remain scarce. This retrospective cross-sectional study evaluated the serological positivity among clinically suspected patients and clinical spectrum of toxoplasmosis in Bihar using laboratory and clinical data from a tertiary-care centre in Patna between September 2021 and July 2025. A total of 2014 serum samples were tested for T. gondii IgM and IgG antibodies using chemiluminescent immunoassay, and serologica

Ocular Toxoplasmosis Masquerading as Acute Retinal Necrosis and Cytomegalovirus Retinitis: A Systematic Review.

TOPIC: This systematic review synthesizes clinical features, diagnostic pathways, interventions, and visual outcomes of atypical ocular toxoplasmosis initially masquerading as acute retinal necrosis (ARN) or cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis. BACKGROUND: Ocular toxoplasmosis occasionally presents atypically, mimicking viral retinitides. This masquerade poses a challenge, as misdiagnosis and empiric corticosteroids for presumed viral inflammation delay anti-toxoplasma therapy and can precipitate fulminant, vision-threatening infection. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, MEDLINE and Embase we

Vision-threatening ocular toxoplasmosis involving the fovea diagnosed by intraocular fluid mNGS: A case report.

Ocular toxoplasmosis is the most common cause of infectious posterior uveitis worldwide and may lead to irreversible visual impairment when the macula is involved. Definitive diagnosis remains challenging because clinical manifestations overlap with those of other infectious and inflammatory retinal disorders. We report a case of active ocular toxoplasmosis involving the fovea in an immunocompetent 44-year-old man presenting with progressive unilateral visual loss and central scotoma. Ophthalmic examination revealed keratic precipitates, mild vitritis, and a yellow-white inflammatory lesion in

Vitrectomy for ocular toxoplasmosis: a case report and literature review.

Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) is a parasitic ocular disorder triggered by Toxoplasma gondii infection, ranking as a leading cause of posterior uveitis. This pathogen spreads globally, with nearly one-third of the world's population having previous infection evidence, and OT may cause irreversible severe visual loss; its typical fundus features include vitreous opacities and focal yellowish-white inflammatory chorioretinal lesions, while active lesions often emerge beside old pigmented chorioretinal scars, and lesions involving the macula or optic disc usually lead to poor visual outcomes. Intravitreal Administration of a Selective HDAC6 Inhibitor Prevents Retinal Damage Progression in the Acute Ocular Toxoplasmosis Model.

Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT), caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is the leading cause of retinochoroiditis worldwide, with particularly severe cases in Brazil. The treatment used for OT is the combination of cotrimoxazole and corticosteroids. However, this therapy includes prolonged treatment, resistance to circulating strains, and cytotoxic effects for patients. The intensification of the inflammatory response against T. gondii can exacerbate retinal tissue damage. In this study, the HDAC6 inhibitor Tubastatin A was evaluated by intravitreal injection in the murine ocular toxoplasmosis model. Tubastat

[Ocular toxoplasmosis in adults : Refresher course].

Ocular toxoplasmosis is the leading cause of infectious posterior uveitis worldwide and a daily challenge for ophthalmologists. Most cases of ocular toxoplasmosis are acquired postnatally, mainly through ingestion of contaminated meat or contact with cat feces. The diagnosis relies on clinical findings such as focal retinochoroiditis, vitritis and retinal scarring. The treatment can include antiparasitic drugs and in selected cases requires the combination with corticosteroids. The recurrence rates are high, particularly in older or immunocompromised patients. Early diagnosis and individualize
