PURPOSE: To present a case of retinal toxicity following intravitreal clindamycin injection in a patient with toxoplasma retinochoroiditis and to review the relevant literature.
METHODS: A single case was evaluated, documented, and described.
RESULTS: A 41-year-old woman with reactivated Toxoplasma retinochoroiditis in her right eye received intravitreal clindamycin (1 mg/0.1 mL) and dexamethasone (0.4 mg/0.1 mL). Regrettably, her visual acuity declined to hand motion one day post-injection. Fundus examination revealed extensive macular necrosis with retinal vascular occlusion, suggestive of

Toxoplasma gondii, a parasitic protozoan that causes toxoplasmosis, is estimated to infect a significant percentage of the world's population. One of the main routes is through consumption of contaminated water, soil, or food containing oocysts. Large scale outbreaks through water contamination were reported across various regions. However, in the Philippines, there is still no data on the occurrence of T. gondii oocysts in environmental matrices. In this study, T. gondii oocysts DNA were detected in irrigation waters and agricultural soils from selected sites in Central Luzon, Philippines, an

Ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) remains a leading cause of posterior uveitis worldwide, where accurate differentiation between Active, Inactive, Mixed, and Healthy retinal states is critical for appropriate management. Existing deep learning studies primarily address binary classification, offering limited diagnostic granularity and interpretability. This study introduces a comprehensive and interpretable multi-model deep learning framework designed for four-class classification of OT using retinal fundus images. The framework integrates convolutional neural networks (CNNs), Vision Transformers (ViT

Toxoplasma gondii is the most common infectious cause of posterior uveitis in immunocompetent adults. While the parasite is typically acquired through ingestion of undercooked meat or contaminated food and water, unpasteurized goat milk has been identified as a less frequent but plausible source of infection. Coinfections in ocular toxoplasmosis are rare, and the role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in these coinfections remains poorly understood. We report the case of a 70-year-old immunocompetent male presenting with severe, refractory panuveitis in the left eye. Initial serologic testing confir

Necrotizing herpetic retinopathy is a term used to describe two similar yet different forms of retinopathy - acute retinal necrosis (ARN) and progressive outer retinal necrosis (PORN), which can both present similarly with eye pain and/or vision loss stemming from inflammatory and necrotic retinal changes caused by members of the Herpesviridae family. This case presentation involves a patient with ARN, which has a multifocal pathogenesis, creating diffuse necrosis that over time coalesces and increases the risk of rhegmatous retinal detachment. We report the case of a 56-year-old male with unc

Climate change and global warming significantly affect the incidence and distribution of infectious ocular diseases. This narrative review explores how climate-related factors-including extreme weather events, precipitation, temperature fluctuations, humidity, wind patterns, ultraviolet radiation, and air pollution-can directly and indirectly influence the burden of ocular infections. By synthesizing evidence from the published literature, we examine how these environmental variables impact disease mechanisms such as pathogen survival, transmission dynamics, and host susceptibility. Increased

The co-occurrence of Stargardt disease, hereditary macular dystrophy, and advanced AIDS is a very rare association. The intersection of these two conditions raises important clinical considerations, particularly in differentiating retinal changes induced by macular dystrophy from those associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection or antiretroviral therapy (ART). In this case, a 54-year-old woman with a history of advanced HIV presented with severe visual impairment, with finger-counting acuity in both eyes. Ophthalmic examination revealed extensive bilateral retinal atrophy inv

PURPOSE: Multiple evanescent white dot syndrome (MEWDS) is a rare idiopathic ocular disorder often affecting young adults. Recently, a secondary form, epiphenomenon MEWDS (Epi-MEWDS), has been described in association with pre-existing retinal conditions. However, its correlation with infectious diseases remains poorly documented.
METHODS: A retrospective review of six patients with infectious chorioretinopathies who developed Epi-MEWDS was conducted. Clinical presentations, imaging findings, and disease progression were analyzed.
RESULTS: This study presents a case series of six patients wh

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Ocular vasculitis is an inflammatory condition affecting intraocular blood vessels, commonly associated with systemic diseases like Behçet's disease, sarcoidosis, and tuberculosis. However, idiopathic isolated ocular vasculitis is rare, particularly in young adults, and presents diagnostic difficulties. Timely recognition is vital to prevent vision loss.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 25-year-old male with unilateral, painless, progressive visual blurring and floaters in the left eye. Examination showed anterior uveitis and retinal vasculitis, including perivascu

Infectious uveitis is an inflammation of the uveal tract, corresponding to the middle layer of the eye, triggered by a response against an infectious agent. This condition is classified into anterior, intermediate, posterior and panuveitis. The most frequent infectious agents in anterior uveitis are viruses, mainly Herpes simplex virus, although it can also be caused by other pathogens such as Bartonella spp., Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Fusarium spp. In intermediate uveitis, syphilis plays a predominant role, while in posterior uveitis various microorganisms are involved, among them Toxopl

BACKGROUND: To establish topographic maps and determine fundus distribution patterns of ocular toxoplasmosis (OT) lesions.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients who presented with OT to ophthalmology clinics from four countries (Argentina, Turkey, UK, USA) were included. Size, shape and location of primary (1°)/recurrent (2°) and active/inactive lesions were converted into a two-dimensional retinal chart by a retinal drawing software. A final contour map of the merged image charts was then created using a custom Matlab programme. Descriptive analyses were performed.
RESULTS: 984 les

BACKGROUND: Retinal photography was performed in pregnancy and postpartum in pregnant Hispanic women with latent Toxoplasma gondii (TG) infection in order to screen for characteristic retinal lesions or the particular scars found in people with active T. gondii infection. A comparison group of TG negative women was included in the study but they did not have retinal photography.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of the parent study was to assess for adverse pregnancy events and evidence for parasite reactivation in TG positive (TG + ) women, through examination of the eyes for characteristic lesions. Retin

Kyrieleis plaques are described in literature as calcific-appearing segmented inflammatory deposits along retinal arterial branches. (1) This clinical finding is most commonly unilateral and typically adjacent to an area of active retinal infection or inflammation. (2) The plaques do not appear to be intraluminal or extravasal, but rather within the vessel walls. (3) Considered to be a dishonourable eponym, this rare clinical entity is often also documented as segmental retinal periarteritis. Kyrieleis plaques are a diagnosis of exclusion and should be differentiated from other presentations o

Ocular toxoplasmosis is the most common cause of infectious posterior uveitis. Available literature is still conflicting regarding the incidence of recurrence during pregnancy as various calculations were employed in the different published studies. Although earlier reports have suggested a difference in presentation and an increase in severity during pregnancy, newer studies appear to show otherwise. Further diagnostic testing, including serologic and intraocular fluid sampling, may be indicated to increase the diagnostic accuracy in this special population of patients. The management of ocul

Granulomatous anterior uveitis with single or numerous gelatinous nodules was found in children living in rural Egypt. All ocular diseases were originally thought to be water-born and related to digenic flukes. The current study sought to learn more about the causes of anterior granulomatous uveitis in Egyptian youngsters who used to swim in rural water canals. 50 children with eye lesions that had not responded to medical treatment were recruited. Four samples were surgically extracted and examined using real-time PCR, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and shotgun metagenomic sequencing

INTRODUCTION: Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) has been suggested to be possibly related to congenital toxoplasmosis (CT), although its prevalence varies from 0% to 26%. This variance appears to be dependent especially on early timing of treatment. However, the available data are based on outdated studies conducted on small groups of patients that lack homogeneity. Therefore, to establish evidence-based guidelines for audiologic monitoring in CT, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of a large case series over a long period of time.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a single-center, retrospec

This case report describes a 74-year-old woman who developed a crystalline retinopathy following intravitreal injection of clindamycin. The patient presented with ocular toxoplasmosis in the left eye but was allergic to sulfa medications, so she was treated with intravitreal clindamycin. Subsequently, fine refractile yellow-white crystals were observed on examination of the left macula. Optical coherence tomography localized the crystals to the posterior hyaloid. Intravitreal clindamycin should be considered in the differential diagnosis of crystalline retinopathy. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imag
