Exploring factors associated with parental adherence to prevention strategies for positional plagiocephaly or brachycephaly: multi-method study results.

This multi-method study explored factors influencing parental adherence to prevention strategies for positional cranial asymmetry (CA), specifically plagiocephaly and brachycephaly. Parents of newborns (N = 218) completed a 39-question online survey using 7-point Likert-type items and responded to one open-ended question. Survey development was guided by the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) and Capacity, Opportunity, and Motivation Model of Behavior (COM-B). The open-ended question (n = 112) aimed to capture the main barriers hindering parental adherence. Descriptive analysis of item rating

Acute Enlargement of a Frontal Calvarial Lesion in Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia Associated with McCune-Albright Syndrome: A Case Report.

Background McCune-Albright syndrome is a rare mosaic disorder caused by postzygotic activating mutations in GNAS , classically presenting with fibrous dysplasia (FD), hyperpigmented macules, and endocrinopathies. Craniofacial FD is common and typically follows a benign course. However, acute symptomatic changes with aggressive imaging features may mimic malignant transformation or secondary lesions such as aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs), creating significant diagnostic uncertainty. Case Description We report a 20-year-old woman with known MAS and polyostotic FD who presented with a 4-week histor

Venous thoracic outlet syndrome in the presence of cervical rib: report of two cases.

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a rare condition caused by the compression of neurovascular structures in the region between the neck and chest. The venous form accounts for 2% to 3% of cases, with deep vein thrombosis most often caused by compression of the subclavian-axillary vein segment between the first rib and the clavicle. The occurrence of a cervical rib as a cause of venous deep vein thrombosis is even rarer. In this report, we present the diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of 2 cases of venous deep vein thrombosis resulting from 2 different mechanisms. The approach was based on a review o

Genetic Analysis in Monochorionic Diamniotic Twins Discordant for One Fetus With Structural Anomalies.

OBJECTIVE: Data concerning the prenatal diagnostic value of exome sequencing (ES) for twins with structural anomalies remain limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the genetic etiology of monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twins discordant for one fetus with structural anomalies and assess the incremental diagnostic yield of chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) and ES. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included 170 MCDA twin pregnancies in which one fetus exhibited structural anomalies between December 2012 and July 2023. Both twins underwent genetic testing using kar

The "Dove Drawing" Appearance of the Ilium in Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia Congenita: A Proposed Radiographic Sign.

Recognizable radiographic signs aid in the differential diagnosis of skeletal dysplasias. Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita (SEDC), a COL2A1-related disorder, presents with characteristic but sometimes subtle pelvic changes in early childhood. To propose a novel pelvic radiographic sign observed in children with SEDC, we reviewed pelvic radiographs of a cohort of molecularly confirmed SEDC patients and noticed that the inferior contour of the ilium forms a continuous line resembling a flying dove, composed of the inner spur (resembling the dove's beak), formed by the inferior contour of t

Anesthesia Clinical Practice Guidelines for Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: A Modified Delphi Survey.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a family of inherited connective tissue disorders distinguished by joint hyperextensibility, skin hyperelasticity, and increased tissue friability. No standardized anesthesia guidelines currently exist for this population, despite facing increased perioperative risks. To address this gap in literature, a three-round modified Delphi survey was conducted with 15 experts in anesthesia and EDS. Seven preliminary guidelines, developed from a comprehensive literature review, were evaluated and refined across three rounds. Consensus was achieved for all seven guideline

Multiple Extensive Odontogenic Keratocysts in a Child With Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome: A Case Report.

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS) is a rare autosomal dominant multisystem disorder characterized by a broad spectrum of developmental abnormalities and tumor predisposition. Multiple odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are one of its major diagnostic manifestations and may precede the development of other characteristic features. Early recognition of syndromic OKCs is particularly important in children, in whom other clinical manifestations may not yet be apparent. We present the case of a 13-year-old boy referred for evaluation of progressive facial asymmetry caused by extensive maxillary lesions. Maxi

Lingual Traction and the Lateral Decubitus Position Facilitate Awake Fiberoptic Oral Intubation in a Patient With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (Hypermobile Type) and Craniocervical Fixation: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Awake fiberoptic intubation (AFOI) remains the preferred technique for anticipated difficult airway management. However, severe restriction of mouth opening, fixed craniocervical anatomy, and sedation-induced hypopharyngeal collapse may substantially impair endoscopic visualization and increase procedural difficulty. Simple mechanical maneuvers that improve upper airway patency may facilitate successful intubation in these highly challenging patients. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the airway management of a 24-year-old woman with Ehlers-Danlos-hypermobile type (EDS-HT) syndrome, pr

Expanding the Clinical and Molecular Spectrum of Cartilage-Hair Hypoplasia in the Mexican Population.

Cartilage-hair hypoplasia (CHH) is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia caused by variants in RMRP (RNA component of mitochondrial RNA processing endoribonuclease), which encodes a non-coding RNA. Despite its well-established clinical and molecular spectrum in some populations, data from Mexico remain limited. We report eight patients from seven unrelated families with CHH. Clinical and radiographic findings were assessed, and RMRP was analyzed by polymerase chain reaction and Sanger sequencing. All patients exhibited disproportionate short stature; prenatal long-bone shortening and s

Effects of Gastroschisis Reduction on Pulmonary Function.

AIM: Neonates who have gastroschisis may be at risk of a deterioration in their pulmonary function as the lesion is reduced. Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive tool that can be used to examine respiratory function. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of bowel reduction in gastroschisis on respiratory function. We hypothesized that as the gastroschisis was reduced, End-Expiratory Lung Impedance (EELI) would also be reduced. METHODS: A Sentec LuMon EIT monitor was used to measure End-Expiratory Lung Impedance (EELI) pre and post bowel reduction. RESULTS: Eight

Differential Associations of Maternal Factors With Anotia and Microtia Laterality in a North American Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital underdevelopment of one or both ears (microtia/anotia) is the most common component of craniofacial microsomia (CFM). Although the right side is more commonly affected, social determinants of laterality remain understudied. METHODS: Using a multicenter North American case-control study of CFM (1996-2002), we evaluated associations between maternal periconceptional cigarette smoking, pregnancy intention, timing of pregnancy recognition, education, and prepregnancy body mass index with microtia/anotia, overall and by laterality. Cases were 137 children < 36 months with mi

Beyond the Monomer: Camphorquinone, TPO, and BAPO as Leachates of Light-Cured and 3D-Printed Dental Polymers-Radical Chemistry, Redox Signalling, and the Dose-Realism Gap.

Research on the biological cost of resin-based dental materials has focused almost exclusively on residual methacrylate monomers. The photoinitiators-camphorquinone (CQ) with its amine co-initiator, and the acylphosphine oxides TPO and BAPO-remain partly unconsumed, can elute, and are seldom measured. Vat photopolymerisation, where acylphosphine oxides dominate, makes this omission material. We critically appraise the photochemistry, elution behaviour, molecular stress responses, and exposure data for CQ, TPO, and BAPO, weighted toward orthodontic appliances, and ask whether a margin of safety

Multi-Omic Integration of the miRNome and Transcriptome in Dermal Fibroblasts from Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders Identifies Convergent Candidate miRNA-mRNA Regulatory Networks Linking Extracellular Matrix Remodeling and Inflammation.

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) are clinically defined connective tissue conditions lacking molecular biomarkers. We tested whether their transcriptomic convergence extends to miRNA-mediated post-transcriptional regulation. miRNome sequencing was performed in cultured dermal fibroblasts from 12 individuals with hEDS, 12 with HSD, and 24 controls. Twenty-five differentially expressed miRNAs (DE-miRNAs) were assessed by qPCR in pooled discovery material and an independent pooled cohort. No miRNA met differential-expression threshold in the dir

Small-Nerve Fibre Pathology in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Is Associated with Liver Fat/Inflammation and Improves with Weight Loss.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is associated with multiple extrahepatic complications, but its relationship with peripheral neuropathy, even without co-existing type 2 diabetes (T2D), remains poorly understood. Furthermore, to what extent addressing liver and metabolic health would be associated with improvements in small nerve fibre morphology (that mediate neuropathy) is unknown. We investigated the relationship between liver health and small nerve fibre morphology in adults with MASLD before and after diet-induced weight loss and improvements in

Contemporary Management of Subclavian and Axillary Artery Aneurysms in Connective Tissue Disease: Navigating Therapeutic Uncertainty in a Rare Vascular Disease Without Dedicated Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Subclavian artery aneurysms (SAAs) represent one of the rarest forms of peripheral arterial aneurysmal disease. Despite their low incidence, management in patients with underlying connective tissue disorders poses specific challenges related to intrinsic vessel fragility. Because of their rarity, the available literature is largely confined to case reports and small, heterogeneous retrospective series, and management remains largely experience-based rather than evidence-based. Explicit guidance from the Society for Vascular Surgery and the European Society for Vascular Surgery is l

Characterization of familial short stature with or without skeletal dysplasia in a Pakistani cohort reveals founder mutations as well as novel variants.

Skeletal dysplasias are a diverse group of genetically inherited bone disorders which may manifest with or without short stature. Extreme short stature can also result from different growth hormone deficiencies. Our research aimed to identify the genetic causes of recessively inherited short stature, with or without skeletal abnormalities in Pakistani families. We recruited participants from thirty-eight pedigrees with a history of these disorders. Radiological examinations were performed for a few patients. Some samples were first screened for variants in GHRHR and RMRP by Sanger sequencing.
