To investigate the impact of gender on the prognosis of children with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) treated with closed reduction and spica cast immobilization (CR-SCI). A retrospective analysis was conducted on 302 DDH children (347 hips) who underwent CR-SCI at our department from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2015. Among them, 42 cases (50 hips) were male, and 260 cases (297 hips) were female. The acetabular index, center edge angle (CEA), and avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head were measured and evaluated on anteroposterior pelvic radiographs. The Severin classification

BACKGROUND: Congenital hyperextension of the knee joint is a rare malformation with a variety of names, principally genu recurvatum of knee, backward bending of the knee, and dislocation of knee. Abnormal anterior hyperextension position and limitation of flexion of tibiofemoral joint are the classical clinical presentation in an infant at birth. The accurate etiology of the malformation is undetermined. Congenital genu recurvatum (CGR) can occur as an isolated entity or can present in association with other congenital abnormalities like talipes equinovarus, developmental dysplasia of the hip,

BACKGROUND: Though the Pavlik harness is often used to reduce dislocated hips in infants with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), residual acetabular dysplasia may occur following reduction. It is unclear whether patient or treatment-related factors, including Pavlik wear duration, are associated with residual dysplasia. As a result, there is considerable variability in treatment practices using the harness. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the duration of Pavlik wear predicts radiographic success at 2-year follow-up for newborns with successfully reduced hips.

French pediatric orthopedics has profoundly influenced global surgery through its approach based on an understanding of growth, biomechanical rigor, and the pursuit of simple, safe, and teachable techniques. On the occasion of the SOFCOT centenary, the SOFOP board pays tribute to these innovations that have become international references. The French school distinguished itself by first seeking to measure in order to treat better, with Duval-Beaupère's work on the evolution of scoliosis, Hechard and Carlioz's growth tables, Mallet's functional score for obstetric palsy, and Diméglio's classifi

INTRODUCTION: Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is a bone-preserving option for young, active patients. The influence of the underlying diagnosis on long-term outcome remains unclear, particularly the distinction between primary osteoarthritis (OA), developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and non-OA conditions.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 104 consecutive metal-on-metal HRAs in 101 patients (three bilateral) performed by one surgeon between 2006 and 2011, stratified into Primary OA (n = 50), DDH (n = 29) and Non-OA (n = 25: avascular necrosis [AVN] n = 15, inflammatory

BACKGROUND: Tibial lengthening with use of a motorized intramedullary lengthening nail (MILN) provides precise deformity correction and distraction osteogenesis without requiring external fixation1. A MILN can be utilized for many etiologies requiring lengthening, such as congenital (e.g., short stature, limb deficiency) or acquired (e.g., post-infectious, traumatic)2. The present video article describes the surgical technique for MILN use in the tibia in a skeletally mature patient with use of the Precice System (Globus Medical).
DESCRIPTION: The preoperative patient evaluation starts with a

Pelvic and femoral osteotomies, including soft-tissue balancing of the pediatric hip joint, aim to restore as physiological a geometry and biomechanics as possible in order to improve function and prevent wear. The main indications are developmental (DDH) and neurogenic dysplasia (NDH), Perthes disease (LCP), and femoral head slippage (ECF/SCFE). In childhood, acetabular roof plasty (PDP) and the Salter osteotomy (SIO) are the primary options; after growth is complete, triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO) and periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) are available, with the former potentially being performed ev

MATERIAL AND METHOD: Acetabular anteversion angle (AAA) and orientation angle of the iliac bone (AOOI) determined by use of a CT scan were studied in CDH. 55 children with CDH were selected on hip arthrography for this study. Subluxated hips were excluded (i.e. opposite hip of a unilateral CDH is normal). 10 boys and 45 girls with a mean of age of 2 years 1 month (extremes from 1 to 4 years 3 months) were studied. CT scan was performed before any orthopaedic treatment in 3 cases of bilateral luxation and 14 cases of unilateral. In the other cases, time between the end of orthopaedic treatment

BACKGROUND: Spinopelvic assessment is critical for surgical planning. It is unknown if age, sex, and body mass index (BMI) influence pelvic orientation during development. This study aimed to (1) describe normative pelvic orientation and (2) investigate how patient-specific factors influence pelvic orientation throughout development from childhood to early adulthood.
METHODS: Computed tomography pelvis scans of supine asymptomatic patients were obtained at a single institution from 2004 to 2022. Three-dimensional measurements of pelvic incidence (PI), sacral slope (SS), and pelvic tilt (PT) w

BACKGROUND: Femoral version (FV) affects hip biomechanics and postoperative outcomes in developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) as well as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). However, its assessment depends on advanced imaging modalities such as CT and MRI with limited clinical utility for cost-effective screening of FV. This study aimed to implement and test the diagnostic accuracy of the lesser trochanter index (LTI) as an indicator for increased femoral FV on pelvic radiographs in patients with symptomatic DDH and FAI.
METHODS: This prospective, diagnostic cohort study included symptomati
