PURPOSE: Early diagnosis is essential for the treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), and the use of abduction bracing is considered the gold standard for patients < 6 months of age. The aim of this study is to report an analysis of the results of using the Coxaflex abduction brace.
METHODS: This multicentre prospective study included 44 hips in infants younger than 6 months with unilateral or bilateral reducible (Barlow-positive) developmental dysplasia of the hip, treated with the Coxaflex brace. DDH was diagnosed by clinical examination and ultrasound during outpatient scree

Variants involving TBX4 are associated with ischiocoxopodopatellar syndrome with or without pulmonary arterial hypertension (ICPPS; also known as small patella syndrome), pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and lethal lung developmental disorders. The variability of penetrance and expressivity of TBX4 variants remains a prominent challenge in understanding their genotype-phenotype correlations. We investigated a five-generation family with 12 affected individuals presenting with isolated ICPPS, lung-related manifestations with features of ICPPS, and other milder abnormalities. Whole-genome

Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase 1 (NTRK1) gene, characterized by impaired pain perception, autonomic dysfunction, and progressive musculoskeletal damage. A 6-year-old girl with ocular and cutaneous albinism, psychomotor retardation, and bilateral hip dislocation was diagnosed with CIPA due to the presence of atraumatic lower limb fractures. Genetic testing revealed a novel NTRK1 splice site mutation (c.851-2A>G). The patient experienced bilateral medial longitudinal a

MYO18B is an unconventional class XVII myosin that is predominantly expressed in muscle and heart tissue. Recessive pathogenic MYO18B variants cause a rare myopathy associated with Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS), facial dysmorphism, short stature and less frequently cardiomyopathy. Reported neuromuscular manifestations were variable, with nemaline bodies observed in one patient. We report six novel patients from four families with an early onset myopathy due to biallelic MYO18B variants. Facial, axial, proximal upper and lower limb weakness was prevalent. Three patients had congenital findings in

OBJECTIVES: The coexistence of multiple genetic disorders in a single individual is more frequent in populations with high consanguinity rates. When a single diagnosis does not fully explain the clinical phenotype, the presence of additional genetic conditions should be considered. This approach is essential for accurate genetic counseling and optimal long-term management. Here, we aimed to present two siblings diagnosed with both neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) and leukocyte adhesion deficiency type 1 (LAD-1), a combination not previously reported.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two sisters b

BACKGROUND: Camptodactyly-arthropathy-coxa vara-pericarditis syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by loss-of-function variants in the proteoglycan 4 gene, which encodes lubricin. It is frequently misdiagnosed as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, leading to prolonged immunosuppressive therapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two unrelated boys born to consanguineous parents who presented with progressive large-joint swelling and were initially diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Both received multiple disease-modifying and biologic agents without clinical response. Inflam

BACKGROUND: Maudsley Family Therapy (MFT), and its manualised version, Family-Based Therapy (FBT), are the only well-established treatment interventions for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN), with treatment efficacy primarily measured by improvements in eating behaviours and weight restoration. A crucial component of this therapy is an intensive home-based refeeding intervention that requires a substantial commitment from parents for up to one year. While this treatment works to restore weight in a proportion of adolescents, very little is known about its impacts on family distress, relationshi

BACKGROUND: Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) is the most common human congenital malformation. When diagnosed and treated before five months of age, it has a high cure rate. If not, surgical management is required with high economic costs, a great impact on morbidity and sequelae that can generate permanent disability.
OBJECTIVE: To design and validate an instrument to timely detect DDH.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An instrument developed from a literature review on the timely diagnosis of DDC, using the PRISMA methodology. To validate it, an expert panel was formed comprising specialists

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound at 2 to 6 weeks of age is routine clinical practice in neonates at high risk; however, developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) may develop after a normal screening examination. There is a current lack of consensus regarding the use and most appropriate timing of subsequent imaging.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What proportion of neonates with a breech presentation who had a normal screening ultrasound result for DDH developed DDH at 6-month follow-up? (2) Are patient factors (sex and concomitant congenital muscular torticollis) associated with an increased odds of late-deve

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) encompasses a spectrum of hip abnormalities in infants. Early identification enables nonoperative management and improved outcomes. Selective screening uses clinical examination to determine referral for ultrasound (US), whereas universal screening performs routine US in all newborns after birth. Despite widespread use of both strategies, there is no consensus on the optimal approach.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to evaluate the outcomes of selective vs. universal screening. MEDLINE, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searc

BACKGROUND: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) may be overlooked when gastrointestinal and musculoskeletal findings are assessed separately.
CASE PRESENTATION: An older woman with two previous small-bowel perforations had bilateral congenital hip dislocation, recurrent shoulder dislocations, skin hyperextensibility, and muscularis propria thinning in nonperforated jejunum. Systematic reassessment using the 2017 classification met minimal clinical criteria suggestive of arthrochalasia EDS, while recurrent bowel perforation raised concern for vascular EDS. Genetic testing was declined.

As per Internet world stats, with 560 million Internet users, India is the second largest online market in the world, ranked only behind China. Out of these 560 million Internet users in India, almost 375 million people use social media. These facts are enough to highlight the deep penetration of Internet and social media in Indian society. This deep penetration of social media among the Indian workers has further more deepened in the era of COVID-19. The employees are working from home, so they are more prone to use mobile and social media platforms for non-work-related purposes. It is a prov

Bile duct injuries (BDI) tend to be more complex in laparoscopic than in open cholecystectomy procedures, and frequently involve young adults with benign pathologies. The ultimate consequence may be a liver transplantation (LT), making this situation one of the most rare transplant indications. Fatal post-transplant outcome is extreme infrequently reported. Aim of this study is to report on our single-case experience and to review the literature concerning lethal outcome after LT for major BDI following cholecystectomy. A 36-year old obese caucasian woman underwent a laparoscopic cholecystecto

UNLABELLED: In vivo evaluation of the immunotoxicity of xenobiotics is mainly carried out in rodents. Recent trends following the 3R (reduction, refinement, replacement) principle have driven development of in vitro methods for screening immunotoxic chemicals. The recently reported IMMUNOTOX-T immunotoxicity assay uses the human monocytic leukemia cell line THP-1, and evaluates potential immunotoxicity by profiling production of various cytokines by cells treated with test chemicals. Development of the assay involved small-scale evaluation of transferability, within-laboratory repeatability (W

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Pediatricians and general practitioners are involved in the newborn screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip. They often rely on the quality of the ultrasound (US) examination to make diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. Therefore, the professional must be able to assess its quality. The aim of our work is to present a new system to evaluate the quality of a neonatal hip US and to assess the effectiveness and reproducibility of this tool among professionals involved in the evaluation of the neonatal hip but not experts in the radiological examination of hip US. AIMS: Worldwide controversy exists on the optimal treatment of stable dysplastic hips. The most common treatment options are abduction brace treatment and active surveillance. The primary aim of this study was to assess the effect of active surveillance in stable hip dysplasia, by investigating the percentage of Graf IIb stable dysplastic hips that recover spontaneously without abduction brace treatment. The second aim was to identify prognostic factors for spontaneous recovery of stable dysplastic hips.
METHODS: A single-centre, prospective cohort study was conducted at the Máxima Medical Ce

BACKGROUND: The best stem type and location for femoral shortening in high-riding developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in not clear. We evaluated the morphology of the proximal femur on EOS™ images, focusing on the anatomical landmarks and measurements relevant to the stem selection in high-riding DDH. Our goal is to identify and define the differences in the anatomy of the proximal femur between patients with Crowe type IV DDH and normal individuals, in order to determine the appropriate neck cut location in these patients to increase the chances of successfully using a wedge femoral stem
