OBJECTIVE: Concentric circle reduction is one of the outcomes after reduction of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). Radiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used to confirm the reduction results. In this study, we evaluated the reduction results of the coronal section of the hip using transgluteal ultrasonography.
METHODS: We enrolled 46 children admitted to our hospital for closed or open reduction plaster fixation of DDH between January 2021 and December 2022. Thirty-eight patients had unilateral DDH, and eight patients had bilateral DDH. Transgluteal ultrasonography, rad

BACKGROUND: As the pelvis is a dynamic structure, the quantification of pelvic tilt (PT) should be done in different hip positions prior to total hip arthroplasty (THA). We sought to investigate functional PT in young female patients undergoing THA and explore the correlation of PT with the extent of acetabular dysplasia. Additionally, we aimed to define the PS-SI (pubic symphysis-sacroiliac joint) index as a PT quantifier on AP pelvis X-ray.
METHODS: Pre-THA female patients under the age of 50 years (n = 678) were investigated. Functional PT in 3 positions (supine, standing, and sitting) wer

There are concerns that selective sonographic screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) may be suboptimal. Our aim was to test this hypothesis by identifying trends in presentation and surgical treatment in patients with DDH. This is a retrospective review of children born between 1997-2018 who were treated surgically for DDH at our sub- regional paediatric orthopaedic unit. Demographic data, risk factors, age of diagnosis and surgical treatments were analysed. Late diagnosis was defined as greater than 4 months. 103 children (14 male, 89 female) underwent surgery. 93 hips were op

Children with cerebral palsy (CP) and neuromuscular hip dysplasia (NMHD) frequently require hip reconstruction including femoral and pelvic osteotomies. Outcomes and complications in CP patients with NMHD who underwent varying degrees of hip reconstruction surgeries were examined. Ninety-nine patients with a diagnosis of CP who underwent surgical management of NMHD over a 15-year period (2005-2020) were reviewed. Three patient cohorts with varying degrees of surgery were analyzed including: (1) unilateral femoral osteotomy with pelvic osteotomy; (2) bilateral femoral osteotomy with unilateral

BACKGROUND: Crowe types 3 and 4 dysplastic hips usually need total hip arthroplasty (THA) with femoral shortening osteotomy (FSO) to facilitate reduction, equalize limb length, and decrease the traction stress in nerves. The frequency of peripheral nerve palsy after primary THA has been reported to range from 0.08% to 3.7%. Apart from direct trauma to the nerve, the excessive extension of the extremity is also reported as a common cause of nerve damage. The current study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) in THA for Crowe types 3 and 4 hips.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a complex clinical entity that is usually underdiagnosed, if not detected and managed early, will turn the affected individual into a disabled being, with negative social, economic and emotional effects.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the capacity for the timely radiographic detection of DDH before and after an educational intervention.
METHOD: An educational intervention is carried out in family medicine resident, where they are given training on detection in DDH radiographic projections. Pre- and post-training evaluation is carried out. Stat

This study aimed to describe the femoral groove morphology using ultrasound in children under 6 months, estimate the incidence of trochlear dysplasia, and evaluate associated risk factors. A prospective study included 298 patients who underwent universal ultrasound screening for hip dysplasia [developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH)] and knee ultrasound. Measurements of sulcus angle (SA), trochlear depth (TD), and trochlear facet asymmetry (TFA) were analyzed. Trochlear dysplasia was considered present if the ASO was ≥159°. Reproducibility was assessed using the intraclass correlation coeffic

INTRODUCTION: Although universal screening by neonatal clinical examination with Ortolani and Barlow manoeuvres is widely adopted, its role as a sole screening tool is controversial due to its poor sensitivity and failure in identifying hip joints that eventually require surgical intervention.
HYPOTHESIS: This study aims to identify risk factors for a false negative Ortolani and Barlow examination in neonatal screening for DDH. The hypothesis is that risk factors for developmental dysplasia of the hips could similarly be risk factors for a false negative Ortolani and Barlow examination.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) from hip and spinal disorders has been one of the main reasons for visiting physicians in patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). It is essential to identify the LBP improvement among all grades of DDH patients treated with total hip arthroplasty (THA) at 5-year follow-up.
METHODS: The study included 407 hips of 306 patients (38 males, 268 females) who underwent THA between July 2007 and December 2016. There were 65 hips in Crowe I, 61 hips in Crowe II, 69 hips in Crowe III, and 212 hips in Crowe IV. One hundred and fourteen hips received subtro

BACKGROUND: Open reduction of the hip is commonly performed in children with severe developmental dysplasia of the hip, or in cases that are refractory to nonoperative forms of treatment. The open reduction has been associated with numerous complications including avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head, the need for reoperation, and residual radiographic dysplasia. This study seeks to determine the effects of preoperative severity of dysplasia, associated procedures (femoral and acetabular osteotomies), age on AVN, and the need for reoperation.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is considered to have genetic predisposition and presents many intrafamilial occurrences. However, there is no report that evaluates the effect of DDH family history on the progression after the onset of hip osteoarthritis (OA).
METHODS: Medical interviews about detailed clinical information including family history were conducted on 298 consecutive patients who had undergone surgery for OA due to DDH. Clinical or radiographic items that are associated with the severity of DDH (total hip arthroplasty [THA], involvement of bilateral DDH, ons

Introduction Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is the most common congenital disability in newborns. The condition can range from a slight laxity in the hip joint to secondary femoral head injury, early osteoarthritis (OA), and mobility issues. There are several risk factors for DDH, including positive family history, female sex, breech presentation, and the presence of clubfoot. Early detection and treatment are crucial to avoid long-term hip dysplasia and arthritis, which can cause difficulty in walking and discomfort. Breech presentation, in particular, is a significant risk factor f

BACKGROUND: Robinow syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that affects the development of multiple systems. Due to its low prevalence and diversity of phenotypic presentation it has been challenging to definitively characterize features of Robinow syndrome.
METHODS: We performed DNA extraction, whole-exome sequencing analysis, and mutation analysis of DVL1 to obtain genetic data on the patient. We subsequently analyzed the patient's clinical and genetic data.
RESULTS: The proband was a 3-month-old female infant who suffered from significant global developmental delay and metabolic disorder. Th

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type arthrochalasia (aEDS) is a rare genetic disease characterized by severe generalized joint hypermobility, bilateral congenital hip dislocation, skin hyperextensibility, muscle hypotonia, and mild dysmorphic features. It is an autosomal dominant connective tissue disease causing defects in collagen, associated with two genes, COL1A1 or COL1A2. Only about 42 cases have been published worldwide. Treatment is currently symptomatic and focuses on increasing the quality of life of these patients, as there is no curative treatment. The main objective of the review was to up

Fetal akinesia associated with fixed joints is a common cause for suspicion of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, a severe condition with heterogeneous etiology. We present the case of a rarer but more benign condition, congenital knee dislocation. The authors report the case of a 27-year-old woman medicated with levetiracetam for epilepsy whose prenatal ultrasound at 22 weeks of gestational age revealed bilateral clubfoot, permanent extension of the inferior limbs with internal knee rotation, normal amniotic fluid quantity, and fetal echocardiography. The remaining ultrasounds revealed simil
